You're welcome.
On a separate note, what's your favorite Mario game?

Hmm, you know that is a hard question, as I like all of them. If I had to pick, it might be Yoshi's Island. Close second is the original Super Mario on NES

My favorite's Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. So many good memories...
Do you have a least favorite? Mine happens to be Sticker Star.

Ah yes, The Thousand Year Door was fantastic! Never played Sticker Star, though.
least favorite? I'm not sure. Mario Party 8 might be. I don't hate it, it just isn't very good to me.

Don't bother with Sticker Star. RPG betrayal aside, the game just feels... pointless. The few characters they show aren't fun or likable, all you earn from the thousands of battle is coins, and even the new art style feels like a kick in the teeth.

That begs the question, which ones have you missed?
Hotel Mario doesn't count!

Let's see...
Mario Party 4 is a big one, then everything for the 3DS. So Mario Kart 7, 3D Land, Sticker Star, Dream Team, and the new Mario Party. There are a few obscure ones like some of the Game and Watch games or the Wario Land games (because Wario Land 1 was also called Mario Land 3), but other than that, I've at least played them.

Ah, similar to my list - none of the 3DS games (Besides demos at stores).
As for Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land - that was my third Game Boy game, and I loved the heck out of it. It's a great platformer I'd recommend, even today.

Got that one, but I still haven't beaten it. I was close once, but long story short, I tried playing it on a Super GameBoy I'd recently bought, but the game froze, and when I reset, everything was gone. It sucks because I was on the final level, too. I'm getting there again, but I'll let you know more once I get further.

it froze in the final level? Odd. I've played that level many times with no issue.
But, the game is not too terribly difficult. Really, it shouldn't take much to get back there. The final boss is a bit of a step up from all the previous world bosses (Especially considering he takes TEN hits to the head, rather than the usual three), but if you develop a pattern, it isn't that big of a deal. Once you get used to the way to beat the boss, though, the game become more about gathering enough treasure to earn the best home in the end...

Actually, I was messing with one of the settings on the Super GameBoy (the one where you can change the four colors into diffent themes.), when I bumped the system and the game froze. When I reset, everything had disappeared. There was nothing wrong with the game itself, I'm glad to say.
Wait, TEN? Holy cow, it's tougher than I thought it would be, considering I got stuck getting at least one. But, maybe it was just cause I wasn't thinking clearly that day. Surely I'll get it this time around.
I'm on my way to collecting all the treasures as I go. As of right now, from level 32, I've got 11 out of the 15 treasures, and I plan to get them all before I fight the final boss (considering I know where most of them are now)

Ah, OK. Sounds like something affected the battery, and erased it...
Yeah, ten, if I recall right. They were sure to up the challenge for the last fight. I suppose it makes sense, since the battle only has one part - as opposed to previous games like Super Mario Land 2, where the last battle with Wario was done in three parts.
Are there any that you are having trouble finding? I remember there being one in particular that took me extra long to find, in Mt. Teapot. I think it was my last one. I was a kid though, when I first started playing the game - it was a real shock to find out that Sherbet Island was an entirely optional world (Which still weirds me out, since they put as much effort into it as any other world...

Mariorox1956 In reply to Retro-Specs [2014-01-03 06:58:22 +0000 UTC]
That might just be it. Was still tough on me, though...
Well, it'll certainly be easier to face it now knowing what to expect. Thanks for the heads up on that.
No, I've got the first 11, so I'm guessing the remaining ones are in the levels ahead. I've got this. (And I remember the one you're talking about, and that one was a real pain to find. Under the waterfall behind the block, I remember)
I guess Sherbet Land was just another one of those bonus stages that was put there for the sake of whether the player is going for 100% or just for the extra coins. It's like the hidden stages in Mario Land 2, they never really served a purpose for beating the final game, just a detour for some extra goodies.

No problem compadre. We classic gamers have each others' backs, aye?
Well, glad to know you got this. Let me know when you beat the game - I want to hear that you got the best ending - a planet, not a castle!
Yes, that's the one. I guess I just kept missing that one treasure, since it was the last I got.
I agree, it's for the sake of completing - all I'm saying is that it was odd to have a whole world, with its own map, multiple levels, treasures, and a boss - that is basically a secret, optional world (Well, not secret - it was labelled in the manual. The entrance was just a secret is all).
You're giving me a strong hankering to play through the original Mario Land trilogy. That is, if I thought I had the time...

Darn straight! *fistbump*
Woah, a PLANET? That's awesome, now I'll have to jump on that right now!
I remember pacing back and forth through that stage with the key going "Where does this go?! Where's the door?!" It's well hidden, I'll give them that.
Yeah, it is. A few levels are something, but an entire world is completely strange. Why they did that, we may never know.
I've got all three, so I'm right there with you. Maybe I'll try beating Mario Land twice in one go. Did it before, and I could do it again.

YES! Or the moon, not sure what it was supposed to be. Either way, large round celestial body with Wario's face on the surface. That is your new goal.
I poured a few hours into doing that too, pacing that level. That was back in 1994, if I recall. During a big family move to a new city, and all I cared about was Wario Land. I remember getting in trouble for digging through a box while our van was on the road, looking for something I could steal batteries from so I could keep playing...
Huh. We both ought to do that playthrough then. I'll admit, all three games are a pretty fun experience. Definitely different from the main Mario series. It's refreshing in a way.

Ok, just beat the game with a grand total of 94,798 coins, which I guess I must've not got enough, cause all I got was a large castle. Maybe I'll run through a few more levels and build up more money before I beat the boss again (and by the by, it was actually six hits to beat him, not ten)
I used to be the same way on car trips through the country with my GBA. Battery lasted for a while, though ours was the one without the backlight, so we had to turn the back seat light on in the car. That never lasted long, since our parents couldn't see through the rear view.
Quite so. Maybe tonight for me, since it's a snow day for me here.

Retro-Specs In reply to Mariorox1956 [2014-01-07 01:57:04 +0000 UTC]
To get the planet, you need the coin counter to max out at 99,999. That every exit of every course needs to be completed.
By the way, did you know about the cheat code - pressing select 16 times?
Huh. I must have forgotten how many hits it takes. I do remember as a kid, someone claiming to me that it took 10 hits to defeat the genie, before I got the game myself, so it seems that memory was stronger than the memory of actually fighting the guy. Go figure.
Yeah, same here, I went years using the one without the back light. I remember playing Tetris outside a lot, and having to change my angle all the time to adjust to the sunlight.
Snow day for you too, eh? In my city, none of the buses were running, so it must have been a snow day here, too. For me, it just meant a LOT of extra shovelling to get out of my driveway...

Mariorox1956 In reply to Retro-Specs [2014-01-07 17:51:17 +0000 UTC]
I figured as much. Well, I know a few levels to get money quick.
No, where do you press at? The map? The main menu?
Well, when I fought I wasn't really counting, but I know it felt like less than ten. Of course, I got a couple of double hits too.
That was obnoxious. But sometimes, if you got it just right, it made the picture so clear. But it would have to be a clear day for that.
Yep, one downside though, we actually had to go to school yesterday, but every school in our side of the state was closed EXCEPT for ours. Even the Academy and courthouse were closed, and we still had to go. I think less than half the students showed up that day anyways, so many of us felt like there was no point in coming today, and the administrators decided we'd be off today for some reason. I think it'll actually be colder today anyway.

True, there are some good places to get lots of coin.
In any of the levels, you pause and press select 16 times, and a blinking cursor appears over your coins. From there, you can edit your number of coins, lives and hearts. So, you could put your coins at 999, then just finish the level.
I remember days like that - going to school when the buses weren't running because I walked, and then hardly anyone being there.
These days, most time there's a snow day, I have to go out anyway - shopping or something. Just involves lots of shovelling and careful driving...

Especially the levels with those birds with the basket goals on their heads. Can get up to 300 coins at a time.
Really? Well, since I've beaten the game, technically, I'll do that so I can see that ending.
I can imagine you guys must have much more snow up north than we do down here on our side of the country. We only got a few inches, so it's never enough to get us out, often. It was just a precaution in case the roads froze overnight. You must get a foot or so, I'd imagine, but I never read the weather for other countries usually.

We do get a couple feet at a time often, yes. And for a while there was a snowbank beside my driveway that was getting up around 10-12 feet - it's a driving hazard since I can't see past it when getting out of the driveway, and there's always the chance of it collapsing into the driveway, being so tall.
Luckily the city sent a front-end loader and a dump truck to clear away our snowbanks. Took them all day though.

Wow, that IS a lot of snow! We never see that much from all our snowfalls put together. Maybe that's for the best though.
I remember as a kid going to the park and was just walking through the walking trail and I saw a normal-sized pile of snow no bigger than a foot tall. So, like the kid I was, I jumped in, and I was enveloped by the snow. My guess was I was maybe 3 and a half feet deep. But that was probably a decade ago, so we haven't seen as much since.

Probably is. My wife and I went out walking this evening about 7:00 PM. We were on a sidewalk with huge snowbanks on the sides - much taller than us. It felt like the sidewalk was a sort of snow hallway, with yards and houses over one side, and the road on the other. The only "openings" in this "hallway" are peoples' driveways, if shovelled well enough (The city just does the street and sidewalk, driveways are up to everyone else).
I can't tell you how many times that "enveloped in the snow" has happened to me. Basically several times each Winter as a kid. I'm not prone to jumping in deep snow these days, but you would easily drop about 3 feet in a lot of places...

That sounds as eerie as it does cool. Never in my life have I seen THAT much snow, but I'd like to.
Whoa. Were you ever like me and try to burrow your way through the snow like Bugs Bunny?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Retro-Specs In reply to Mariorox1956 [2014-01-22 00:51:36 +0000 UTC]
It IS a little eerie, actually! There's the enormous snow banks, and the crisp frozen air that adds a sort of quiet ambience to the outdoors, but add in this - often on cold, snowy nights in our city, we get a "low ceiling". That is, the overcast clouds above are much closer to the ground than normal. This produces an echo effect and makes it feel almost like you are indoors with a high ceiling, like a gymnasium or something. It's a really surreal feeling...
Fun as burrowing in the snow would be, it'd probably be rather dangerous here as well. But, as a kid I'd often carve tunnels into snowbanks.

Oh wow, I'd like to see that first hand, to be honest. Is there a photo of those snowbanks? If so, I'd like to see them.
Depends on how deep the snow is or how solid it is. A fair six feet would probably be enough. Regardless, as a kid, it was fun to do. Made me feel like an Eskimo.
