Hi,

I saw one of your drumming photos on ~Drummers-Unite club's page. Excellent photography.

It's good to see another fan of Vinnie Colaiuta. He's one of my main influences. Check out his playing on this Jeff Beck album [link] The guy is awesome!

thanks for your kind words! They mean a lot to me
maybe I should bring my camera to my practice place again

Yeah I love Vinne In fact I've lot of influances. I can't really name one main or favourite
I'll check this album out for shure

oh and if you want to talk with me please visit my other (traditional art) acount: I'm way more active there

Fjordian In reply to Monyok [2009-02-07 08:32:04 +0000 UTC]

No problem.

Yes, you should take more shots of your drums. You obviously have a good eye.

It's good to have lots of diverse influences, as it makes you a more rounded and inventive drummer. Buddy Rich is my drum hero, and I grew up listening to jazz, but listen to all kinds of music now.

Vinnie is awe-inspiring on that album. It comes out on DVD in March. The bass player on that gig is the 21 year-old Tal Wilkenfeld, who's been compared to the legendary Jaco Pastorius, due to her prodigious talent. She's only been playing bass for four years, and is already working with big names in the scene.

Thanks for the link to your main account. I'll check it out.

well I'll carry my camera to the place where I work and will take a lot of pictures of drumsets

Oh I'm always amazed by Buddy! he was soo great!

oh yeah I saw several videos about her... I also listen a lot of bass virtuosos so I coldn't miss her
I doN't know why but sometimes bass players inspires me just as much as a good drummer

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fjordian In reply to Monyok [2009-02-11 07:13:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Buddy was a genius. I saw him in the early 80's with his Big Band, and was stunned. I was lucky enough to go backstage and meet the great man. A moment I'll never forget.

I listen to bass players as much as drummers. The rhythm section in the band holds everything together, so it's crucial to work closely with the bassist.

One of my favourite bass players is Victor Wooten, who plays with "Bela Fleck and the Flecktones". Here's a great clip of him jamming with drummer Steve Smith [link]

And check out Victor Wooten's rendition of "Amazing Grace" [link]

haha btw I could not find any better solo of Victor than this one: [link] not just because the fast thing.. it's just beautyful

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fjordian In reply to Monyok [2009-02-15 16:20:59 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it is another great solo. I prefer the work Victor's done with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, rather than the slap bass style. If you watch their DVD "Live At The Quick", you get the full range of his extraordinary bass skills.

Actually, my favourite bass player of all time is the Icelandic genius, Skuli Sverrisson. He plays a lot with master guitarist, Allan Holdsworth. Skuli can play stuff that really stretches the boundaries. It's not just the "speed thing" - which he does also - it's more about the actual harmonic/rhythmic style of his playing.

This is an example of the kind of "playing outside" technique I'm talking about. In this clip, try to focus on what Skuli's playing on the bass. Check it out [link]

I've seen this band several times now, and would recommend it if you get the chance.

Incidentally, Chad Wackerman on drums is another influence of mine [link] I love his amazing polyrhythmic and quirky style. Inventive drumming indeed.

Chad also did a DVD of drum duets with Terry Bozzio [link]

Well I listened some of Béla Flacks work and I can say I love Victors work there too

I didn't know Skuli Sverrisson but I'll check him out! thank for suggesting! In fact the vide you gave me is unavileable for now, so I couldn't check it out
I knew Ched Wackerman I just have to listen more of his works.
In fact I have so many things to discover in music... I doN't know how to start it
thanks for that second video it's truly inspiring!

Well I'd like recomend you a very-very talented and badly-known drummer; His name is Gergő Borlai.
well in fact it's a shame his not well known.... check out his video: [link] he has some solos up on youtube. but in fact he is not only a good soloist, he is has a very good groove too....

Fjordian In reply to Monyok [2009-02-16 06:46:53 +0000 UTC]

I had problems with the link to the clip of Skuli on YouTube too. It kept going to a deviantART warning page instead. That's strange, but I clicked the link on that page, then it took me to YouTube.

The video clip was a tune called "Proto Cosmos" by the Allan Holdsworth band. Maybe you could look for the clip on YouTube by typing in "Allan Holdsworth".

The album I'd recommend would be "Hard Hat Area" by Allan Holdsworth. Skuli plays great bass throughout. You can get it on Amazon.

I liked that drummer, Gergő Borlai. I was impressed by his overall technique, and great sense of groove. He'd be a great drummer for Holdsworth's band. Sounds a bit like Gary Novak in fact.

Thanks for the link.

oh I had a chance to see him live with his band called "European Mantra" what was a quartett including him, a very talented guitarst (who I also higly admire) Peta Lukács, a bass-guitarist; Péter Papesch and a keyboardist; János Nagy.
Well they broke up this autumn. Me and my musician friends was sad about... however I've got a chance to see them live. They did some really crazy fusion music. I don't know if there is some useful video on youtube... but if I find one I'll send you the link

Monyok In reply to Fjordian [2009-02-11 15:34:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh such a lucky boy in fact I'm young... Buddy left us before I was born
I saw a lot of recordings from him when I started to learn how to play the instrument... there was a tv and vhs player and drummer videos all the time

ooh yes! Wooten is one of my favourite too! I have almost all of his recordings Including the SMV one... and I was really glad they did it, because Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke are also my heroes on the instrument.
I listened a lot of Béla Fleck too... well mainly not the Fleckstones, but New Grass Revival!
haha infact saveing up money to get myself a bassguitar as a second instrument

It was after hearing some Buddy Rich LPs my cousin played me, that got me into drumming. I then played professionally for about 35 years. I haven't played for a while now though, due to a few health issues, but would love to get back on the kit.

You can see my drumkit specs here [link]

I wanted to link you to some video clips, but I keep seeing a deviantART warning page. I went to the HELP desk on DA about this problem, and it was suggested I try using "tinyURL" to add website links. See if this [link] lets you see the clip of Skuli Sverrisson's bass playing with Allan Holdsworth on YouTube.

I still love drumming, and chatting about music in general. I also compose music on my computer. I could send you my e-mail in a note if you like. Then I'd be able to send you recordings I played drums on.

I'd really like to see your druming after
oh and if you have an MS messanger we can chat live... that'd be great to talk all about this stuff (even if my english is not the greatest) so if you do have one I can send you my msn adress via DA note. It's also one of my e-mail adresses...

Well I play drums about... 5 and half years. I'm still young so it's a long time for me I'm a fool I know but music seems to be got me, so I choosed this to my general profession... I know it's hard (if not impossible) to make money as a musician, but I can make living from teaching. It's my greatest lucky; I love to teach, and it looks like I've a sense of teaching also... and the school where I learn will gladly welcome me as their new teachers!

Well that DA warning page... you can follow the link on it I guess. I did it. And I arrived on youtube page the video called "Proto Cosmos". But than YouTube said that the video is "No longer avileable" so I guess they removed it. I tried to refresh the page (tought it worked with other videos) but it was still unavileable. so they removed it for shure...
