Saw your Litchi cosplay at the con. You did a great job!
Here, have this Taokaka drawing as a gift for being such a fantastic cosplayer. Watch out! She's locked on target (and very single-minded)!
PS. DA Muro sure is a VERY basic oekaki. This is my first time working with it.

And thanks for the compliment.. I see you graduated from the Art Institute? I've almost complete my first year there. ^^

You're welcome. ^_^
Ah, so you're going to the Art Institute huh? How are things going so far? Depending on your area of expertise, it can be a difficult place.
By the way, adding you to my watch list. Always good to stumble across a fellow local artist.

Very well, thanks
I actually haven't had much trouble so far, although the 3d maya classes are kind of a bitch, that's to be expected XD

Yeah, the maya classes can be a massive pain in the ass. Back in the day the animation program's director used to be able to switch out 3d classes for more advanced traditional animation and illustration classes. So if you weren't good at 3d at all, and only wanted to be say... a comic book illustrator in the end... You could specialize. Of course, he eventually got fired because he wasn't "following guidelines."
I myself can't do hardly anything in a 3d program. I graduated before the huge curve to shift the school's focus from traditional 2d to 3d. The irony here is that the old director actually created the Gaming program in order to separate 2d and 3d curriculum... But Jack Snowden has basically made them damn near the same program, which is unfortunate. Had the old director's plan gone through, the Animation program would have had a lot more focus on standard illustration and animation, with specialized classes for the finer (and older) methods of artwork. Plus there would have been a shift in specializing more in digital artwork.
I gather you want to be a more traditional 2d artist, right? Or perhaps a bit of both (affluent in both 2d and 3d)?

Well I've always been a traditional 2d Artist and I like it, but I do want to be able to do whatever an employer asks of me in 3d as well, which is why I'm not kicking up much of a fuss about it.
Its true the two different disciplines are almost the same things now, with the exception of a few classes like Acting and Movement- which was extraordinarily helpful for us Animation students. However, even though its a shame that the two aren't quite as specialized, we actually gain a lot from working alongside each other. Not by class teachings, but by socializing.... I have a GAD friend in my 2d class, and just through chatting we've taught each other a lot. She got me to figure out how to do a lot of coding, and I taught her drawing techniques for Flash, so its mutually beneficial for the most part.
Still, I'd agree that I wouldn't mind more strictly Animation or GAD classes.

My advice? Try to find some time to focus on what you're truly good at. The school generally teaches you small tidbits of everything, so as to try to make you into a whole jack of all trades angle. But unfortunately, that title is generally synonymous with the "master of none" title. Honestly, the Art Institute doesn't teach enough of each technique for anyone to master it during the time period given. For instance, there is generally only a single digital painting class. Digital painting is a process that takes years to master. There are always new techniques to observe yourself or learn from others. A single class isn't going to help with anything.
The old animation director, Robbie Gilbert, used to tell me to find something I was good at, and focus on bettering that aspect. The reason why, is that once you're in the industry, generally you're hired to perform a single task. If you can do something else well, great, but they're initially interested in that one thing you can do smashingly well. So yeah, to get to the point. My advice is to find something you're really good at, and you love, and then focus on it during your free time.
Of course, that is assuming the teachers give you free time at all. Some of the work loads can be ridiculous. Oh yes, and word of warning. Try not to take any classes by a man named Stuart Neiman. He's a TERRIBLE instructor. He doesn't really know what he's talking about. Also, he never does personal demonstrations because well... He can't. All of his artwork in his portfolio is either a trace, rotoscoped animation, or digitally altered photo. He only still has his job because he actually has a teaching license. One of my friends (a GAD student) recently dropped out partly because of him.

I see, consider me warned then.
I appreciate the advice, but we'll see how it goes.... I do rarely ever have free time this quarter. Now that I'm taking five classes, I get about 30 hours worth of homework per week, so I'm pretty tired after it all. Its difficult to want to continue working on personal art when I just spent five hours modeling an airplane in maya. xD know what I'm saying?
I was going to try drawing a bit today... the school isn't really giving me any critique or feedback on my art itself, just the homework they require, so that's been a tad frustrating.

KagatoAkara In reply to Nosferatu-neko [2011-05-01 00:38:20 +0000 UTC]
I completely understand. The school LOVES to pile on work. Now, while a lot of work does make an artist better... The work they assign generally can bog one down more than anything. And yeah, you don't get any real critique until the mandatory evaluations. It used to be quite different, where a teacher would literally critique the hell out of a student (almost to the point of tears in some instances). As harsh as it was, it was quite necessary. Nowadays most teachers at the school kind of tip-toe through the tulips, making sure not to hurt anyone's feelings. Problem is, if the artist isn't made aware of a problem in his/her work, he/she won't be able to make the effort to correct it.
One of my friends (who is a far better artist than myself) taught me more than any instructor in the art institute. Part of the reason why is because he wasn't afraid to point out the flaws in my work. And then bash me about it until I finally corrected it. So yeah, it might be beneficial to find one or more people who are like that for you. Then again, someone of his calibre is harder to find in the AI nowadays, due to the focal shift from 2d to 3d.
Out of curiosity, was that airplane model an assignment by Adam Crespi?

No, Bethany Smith.
She's in the habit of failing 2/3 of her class every quarter... not a terribly comforting thought, but I'm confident enough in my abilities.
I have a friend who competes with me.. the only reason I'm at the level I am now is because we've been unintentionally pushing each other for the past few years. I rather like that relationship.

KagatoAkara In reply to Nosferatu-neko [2011-05-01 11:57:36 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that sounds like the proper relationship for an artist to improve.
Bethany Smith eh? I've heard of her. Unfortunately, all I've heard has been bad. There are certain teachers that, while hard-asses, can teach you quite a bit about their particular field. Tim Everett is one of those teachers. He's a complete hard-ass when it comes to quality, and he has such a bad memory he hardly remembers any of his students... But, he certainly knows his shit. So amongst all the negatives with a teacher like that, there are positives. However, I haven't heard of any positives about Bethany.
If, for whatever reason, you fail that class, take it with another teacher. If it's the class I think it is, you should try for Crespi. He's demanding, but good at making sure you understand what he wants and how he wants it done.

I'll keep that in mind this quarter.
I really enjoyed having Bob Hughes as my Acting and my math teacher.... they may not have been art classes, but he was just the right amount of firm and I learned a great deal from him. Jackson is another good one, but I've only had him for a minor class so far and not the drawing one.

Yeah, Bob is a good teacher. I had him as my math teacher, and Amy as my acting teacher. Also, you should eventually take animal anatomy with Amy Williams. It's a fantastic class. Any class that teaches anatomy is the one you want to take. Also, if the Bodies exhibit comes back through Seattle, you should take a trip there. You'll learn a hell of a lot that will help you out with drawing the human body.
Speaking of Bob, I saw him a few months back outside of school. He was going to that Mexican grill (which the name of escapes me at the moment) up at northgate at the same time I was. I said hello, but unfortunately he was sick at the time so we didn't talk much. Still, was nice to see him.

Oh, right?! I love Bob, he's just an amazing person all around XD He established trust with the acting class on day one, and it went a long way in getting us comfortable enough to put on skits as animals, insects, the opposite genders, and machines... oh and the vampire lesbian thing...
I do intend to take Animal Anatomy, as I rather enjoy drawing beasts of various kinds and could use such a class.

Sounds like he made you guys act out quite the variety of roles... Do I even need to ask about the whole vampire lesbian thing?
Animal Anatomy is a very good class. It's essential for anyone who wants to draw monsters or beasts or any sort. Not only do you learn the anatomy, but also how to create simple builds for drawing a variety of creatures. So yeah, it can be applied to a variety of uses. Here's my animal anatomy final:

It's very, very old though... So I'm not quite as proud as I was back then. But I decided to do something new when I did it, experimenting with watercolor paint and pencils, and also in making a diorama. Still, showing you this gives you an idea of what some of the assignments are in the class. And actually, there's a separate third piece for the final here:

ohhhh neat, Lovely work... I love the colors on the final one.
we were performing the play; Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, to best explore how emotion creates movement.
I don't really care WHY we did it... just that I got cast as the vampire lesbian/succubus.
And I was happy.
