Yes game has really mastered it. There's Fire Yellow (incomplete) and I think Thunder Yellow as well. Of course, only Pikachu will follow you. Unrelated, but Emerald Enhanced just got an update where a trainer will follow you for double battles.

I made friendships on the Klei forums. Cheering on their work there and discussing with them on discord. You'll find your group eventually. Just cheer people on and give them small critiques and little things about what interested you about a piece you like and they're eventually come. Being nice and honest comes a long way.
