Excuse me, I'd like to know how do you make those ink/markers works, ΒΏDo you apply the ink and then the markers or is it backwards? and ΒΏwhat kind of ink and markers do you use: water based and alcohol based? Thanks and great work!

Frohickey In reply to Osmont2 [2008-10-30 15:51:11 +0000 UTC]
No problem. The outlines are done with pigment-based fine line markers from Staedtler (although there are a lot of different brands; Faber-Castell, Sakura, Pilot) This kind of pen uses ink that does not fade, so the artwork is stable and long lasting. The colours a done using dye-based markers with an alcohol base. The brans I use are Letraset tria which have three different tip sizes built in (another similar brand are Prismacolour). The advantage of the Tria markers is that they are refillable (the Prismacolour are not). I tend to scan the line art first and then print out a copy onto card stock to colour. Your own printer might work but some printers use ink which smears with the markers. You'd have to test it out. Normal photocopiers are compatible with the tria markers (they were actually designed to be used on photocopies). Also, doing it this way allows you to do several different colour schemes without affecting the original line art.

"Old school," indeed! It's still a perfectly modern way to do art. With one's hands using art tools, not clicking buttons.

LOL Old school isn't a bad term at all! but it seems that CG coloring it's too overated in nowadays. I like the way good ink works look colored with markers or wash and I think that some inks should be colored with flat colors or even no color at all, but the U.S. industry standard doesn't think the same way I guess I just bought a copy of Richard Corben's Den and man, those colors are alive!! it's like a weird kind of visual drug!!!

Corben rocks! I remember the first issue of "Heavy Metal" (#4, I think)I got when I was in high school. I had only ever seen comics in the standard format; pulp paper, limited colours, average print quality. When I saw Corben's (and Moebius' colour work on glossy paper and great printing, I couldn't believ my eyes. Every panel was a complete painting! It influenced me ever since.

HA! I knew!! Since I saw your artwork I thought of Corben. It's cool to meet someone that keeps exploring in that style, I wish new generations would take the chance.
