Hi Staats! We're surviving. A lot of construction at our house, foundation, roof, painting, getting tiresome. Spring I think has come to Berkeley. It's been warm and sunny for 3 or 4 days, and is predicted to be that way for another week. You guys have had a lot of snow storms recently, haven't you?

It has been such a profound pleasure to follow you work over the years. As one style has become more and more refined, I see you constantly reaching out to new styles. You have a great way of bringing people on your explorations, constantly reinterpreting scenes in different forms and styles. I am a great admirer.

Your watercolors are very nice. Could you share how you convert them to digital? I have a problem with the colors in mine always getting washed out.

Thanks! It's easier to do than explain, but I'll point you in the direction and then you can experiment or look things up on the net. First, either get a lighting setup that you can use every time and that will always be the same or very similar. Sometimes you can use the built in settings on your camera. For example, if you are using ordinary incandescent lights, there is a setting for that. Best is to learn to use the white balance setting on your camera. A telephoto lens or longer focal length lens works better than a short focal length (fish eye) because it distorts less. Then once you have the photo, you need to run it through a photo processing program. You don't need PhotoShop or anything complicated, the most basic photo program is all you need. Adjust the levels (histogram) so the histogram goes right to the edges on both sides. That is most likely the cause of your photos being washed out. Then you may want to increase the contrast slightly. Good luck!

Ah, okay. I thought you used a scanner since they're so straight and evenly lit. I didn't expect it was a camera.
I'll try adjusting the levels & contrast. Thanks!
