Hey Alex, you don't mind if I send you something? I'm only looking for your opinion about it.

Sorry, for the late answer. If it's something art and/or drawing related, yes, you can send me in a private message whatever it is you want me to see and I'll give you a review.

Look Colin, I will be very clear about this. I am not interested. I am a full time university student with a part-time job and I don't have the time for this, nor that I want to participate. I don't know if you noticed, but I have been barely active on DA for the passed years. Let me teach you something, because it appears you did not quite understand before. This kind of passive-aggressive approach will not help you and do not expect anyone from the artistic community on DeviantArt to participate to your challenge if you harass them for not answering you while they clearly stated their intentions the first time. I still wish you good luck with your challenge, but please, stop contacting me for that.

Hey Alex you go or went to college right? What is it like there?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Percevanche In reply to cin-Dsins [2017-07-20 02:12:18 +0000 UTC]
Well, my situation is quite unique...
First of all, I'm living in Canada and based on your account, you live in the United States. So I imagine going to university in your country might be a little different than in mine.
Actually, where I go is not on a campus. It's outside of it. It's not even in the same city. I'm going to NAD School of Animation, which is in Montréal. It's a school specialized in the production of animated movies, visual effects, the production of video games and the study of interactive technologies and medias.
It's part of UQÀC, which is the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (University of Québec in Chicoutimi). This is where the campus is located, and since it's like 6 hours away from Montréal, I never actually set my foot in it. Not yet. Probably when I'll graduate.
Anyway. You're probably asking about how is life in college. Well, it's different from what you see in movies. At least, from my perspective. I'll tell you about my personal experience.
To begin with, I take the bus and the subway everyday to go to my school. Once I arrive there, I usually wait until the class begins. We're about 30 to 60 students, depending on the course.
Since it's an animation school, some of my classes are lectures given by the professors, and some others are on the practical level, where we actually work in class.
The rest of the time, we spent it in the working areas, where we do our projects. Some people do this at home, but since I live far from NAD, I stay to work several hours on. Some projects are done alone by ourselves, while some are done in teams. We don't have a lot of exams, so there's virtually no studies, but we have a lot of projects.
Each semester is separated in three periods: the beginning, where projects are usually easy and where we still feel quite free; the middle, where things get a little more difficult and by the four-to-five last weeks, it's the end of the semester, a.k.a. the Killing Nightmare of a College Student, because this is the time where all final projects are due and almost at the same time. So begin the long days and nights at school, working hard and barely sleeping. People (except for me) are on caffeine to stay awake (there's a Tim Hortons (yes, I know, it's very Canadian) near the school, and I swear they must make a fortune on coffee out of our pockets).
There might be some people having massive breakdowns, because the work charge is sometimes too high or because they think they can't give in their projects in time. We also have to deal with technical problems, such as the rendering farms. People in their final year use most of the computers at the end of the semester to render their movie, which require almost all computers and sometimes it's impossible to work at school.
But we manage to get through it... For example, I've completed my first year at college with very good grades. Only two to go. And so will you, depending into what you want to study...
I hope this managed to answer your question. As I said, my situation is quite different than any other student in college. If you're about to apply, may I make a suggestion? You could apply here, in Montréal. It's been voted the best universities city in the world and the best city for students in 2017. It's also actually cheaper than going to college in the US, like a real fraction of the price. And foreign students are very welcome here.
So long, it's been a pleasure!

Wow your college sounds difficult yet amazing. I wish I could go there but I'm not sure how cold it is there.
Still though thanks for answering my question; I was wondering what's the difference between Canadian College and USA college.

Percevanche In reply to cin-Dsins [2017-07-20 05:07:07 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I guess we could say that. Thanks.
Well, as for your question about the difference in colleges... First of all, I live in Québec. Our scholarship is really different than any other provinces.
It starts at primary school (elementary school, if you want), for six years plus the first year which is kindergarden, then you go directly to secondary school (high school) for five years - we don't have middle school as you do in the US.
After that, there's cégep. That's the main difference with all the other provinces. It's kind of the gap between high school and university. Cégep means Collège d'études générales et professionnelles (cégep for short and can be translated as College for General and Professional Studies).
You usually do two or three years, depending on what you want to study. Two-year educations will lead to university, because they are what we call pré-baccalauréat (pre-baccalaureate) and this is what they are made for. They give you a degree to enter university. On the other hand, a three-year education can lead you directly on the work market.
In the end, you'll receive a DEC (Diplôme d'études collégiales or College Studies Diploma). I got two of these, one in Cinema and Communication and one in 3D Animation.
And now I'm in university - or college, I don't understand the difference. And the major differences betwen CAN and USA universities are, first, the fact that all the universities (at least in the Québec province) are public universities funded by the government (not private like Harvard) and you will pay the same amount everywhere, which is about 1500 $ CAN per semester.
Of course, if you want to become, let's say, a doctor, you're going to pay a lot more for the books and et cetera. Furthermore, most of the campuses are in Montréal, so you don't have this feeling of isolation; you're in the city, not in the countryside or something. So it's a different feeling.
Usually, a bachelor degree requires at the very least three years of work and study, with two semesters per year. Semesters are short. They go from the end of August to the end of December, and from mid-January to the end of April. You get four months of vacations to fill your pockets by part-time working.
And I think it's easier for Canadian students to get a higher education than in the US, unfortunately. Mostly because of the price, and it's also easy to get a student loan. In my circumstances, I'm happy to have none and be able to pay everything by myself.
I couldn't say anything else. I don't personally know someone who studied in the US. I hope I was able to help you once more. Sorry if I may seem to write too much. It just comes out of my mind like this, that's all.
Good luck!
