I'm been grooming for about 9 years now (I work at Petco). I groom five days a week and it's really not that bad. The only downside is when you get 'crapped' on, 'pee'ed' on, and well... other animal bodily functioned on. Otherwise it's great! I groom a lot cats (my speciality actually) as well as dogs.

I never thought of myself being a dog/cat groomer but when you're looking for a job, I guess you'll take what's available. I started out as a bather and finding out how much I enjoyed working with the animals decided to be a groomer. I've been at it for about nine years now.

Yes... and no... At Petco, you are paid either hourly (minimun wage of $8.00) or by commission (which for me is 50% of the ticket - example: to shave a cat is $48 so I make $24 for myself). So the more animals I do, the higher the commission I make.

That isn't bad, in my opinion plus commission is very nice. My friend is thinking about starting her own business, but i don't think she's taken any business courses, or even groomed more than two dogs.... Hmmmm, would it be wise for her to be set on dog grooming with such little experience?

That's the thing at Petco it's either hourly verus commission. You don't get both which would be nice.

With such little experience, NO! I would suggest that she work in a private shop or ever for Petco or PetSmart and get the experience first before even considering opening up her own place.
