I think my problem is too much down time. I'm being distracted by every little thing for a good long while now. Taking an indefinite break from college. I want to go back, but not if it means burying myself alive in student loan debt, and I'd rather move out than go back right now anyways.

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but I have a question concerning tracing. In realism, the artist usually uses a photograph or some sort of reference to get a near-exact copy. Would this be considered tracing? I can understand that some simpler-styledized genres of art mostly consisting of strong contour lines would be a different story. In terms of realism though, the drawing goes beyond just lineart and requires an extensive knowledge of shading and penciling techniques. So the question is, what sort of boundaries does tracing go by?

Well it seems you've already gotten a useful response, but I'll go ahead and put my 2 cents in anyways.
It seems your referring to still life, for which a photo is sometimes used, and the final product maybe done in a stylized fashion. However any decent artist would leave a note or comment on the work that it was done still life or from a photo. Does that answer your question in a satisfactory manner?
