If you duplicate a layer, and then vary the under-color on the original, you can get additional effects as well, along with varying opacity.
I am working with two layers now, called:
"grass-weeds-01-fx", which is above on called:
"grass-weeds-01".
I name them to match groupings, and also the same names on selections (masks, channels or alphas).

So if i understand well the process, if you do value study (greyscale) and learn materials you can simply paint greyvalue and get all materials from style that's it ?

Yes. I often open a new layer, and apply the style immediately. Then as I paint any color, (which may or may not affect the style), the material shows up immediately on the painting. It is like painting with glass, metal, water, fire or whatever material you stored in that "Layer Style" [button]. You can even adjust the parameters to customize the material to the new object or shape. By applying a variety of masks, and transparencies, you can ghost the object too.
The possibilities for layer styles are endless, literally. They follow a 3D layered design. As I worked more with oil and watercolor paints, and created montage art, in my "traditional media past", I realized I was layering mediums, varnishes, paint, additives, etc. in a 3D sort of fashion, on layer on top of another. Art, is in essence, "layering". But in traditional media, one cannot easily go back to fix an error, or adjust a palette, pattern, etc. Layer styles allow one to emulate that process, AND as a fantastic addition, to adjust layers to keep am image in balance.
I also remember the many layers of transparencies that we used at work to build a printed page. One used templates for page layouts to save time. Reproduction capabilities are very important in mass produced "artistic objects" like books, giclées, lithographs, etc. Printing is a layering of inks, that must be done in a very precise method to reproduce a worthy copy.
So much for my expose on artistic layers.
