I learned that there are some verbs in Swedish that end in "a" in the infinitive, have the "a" replaced with "er" in the present tense and have past tense forms without endings but with a vowel in the stem being replaced by another one which we would have to memorise which vowel in which verb is being replaced with which vowel. Am I right?

Yes indeed, 'run' are one of those verbs.
SpringA = run
SpringER = Running

Among the other examples, there are:
försvinna (försvinner,försvann),
skriva (skriver,skrev),
sjunga (sjunger,sjöng),
smyga (smyger,smög),etc.
Note that the forms in present and past tense are in parentheses.
