My characters surprise me constantly. My characters are like my friends - I can give them advice, but they don't have to take it. If your characters are real, then they surprise you, just like real people. ~Laurell K. Hamilton
I need this on a stamp. Or my own version: "My characters are like my (best) friends; I think I know them well, but I don't know everything. They still find ways to surprise me."
Case in point: my tendency to change character bios well after the fact. I try to avoid physical changes (those bios exist as much for the hope of commissioning pictures as for readers' reference), but changes will occur.

Do you know how much you made my year??
I recently was on a fanfic website and realized I hadn't uploaded all of "She Knew Too Much" let alone the sequel. Since I am one computer down (the one with the actual files...) I came to DA to grab the story.
And Β then I re-read some of our banter.
And THEN... then I saw your signature has MY quote!
I LOVE YOU! Happy Holidays and a Wicked New Year!

I love when I can make someone feel good with little things like that.
And hey, I still love that quote--it feels so much like it belongs on the show.
Which fanfic site again, and do I already follow you there? That story's on my to-read-again list; I know I can easily download entire fics off of fanfiction.net but I'm not so sure about other sites....
"Since I am one computer down (the one with the actual files...)"
Ouch. I've been keeping my artsy-type files on DropBox to share between computers, but I know even that has disadvantages... like the system's insistence on creating multiple copies of a file I just edited or deleted, and filling up my available space.

I don't have any paid content on there just yet, I've only just started putting up my current novel-in-progress's prologue as a freebie. The plan is to start adding the rest of the novel as paid content once the prologue is done, and I'm hoping to get to that part soon.
But patrons can still subscribe even if there isn't paid content, can't they? It looks like it would still show that I have patrons? And since I have it set to charge on a per-piece basis instead of per-month, they won't get charged until I start uploading the rest of that novel, but I'll still see that they're there.
As I alluded to elsewhere, I'm still working on my networking skills; I'd appreciate any advice you might be willing to give on this thing.

Yeah, I had a few different images I wanted to try for the webcam (including a few that I'm going to try snagging from my DVDs just to practice making my own gifs again), but short of putting up half a dozen custom widgets, I settled on that as the best one.

Very cool. What software do you use to convert your movies to gif?
π: 0 β©: 1
SideQuestPubs In reply to snazzie-designz [2015-02-19 18:44:23 +0000 UTC]
There's a variety of them out there. There are some free sites that will do the full conversion for you, but they add their logos or watermarks to your image. I think you can do it in GIMP, though I haven't really played around with it.
Me, I expect to use some of the programs my last employer got me via the Adobe Creative Suite--Premiere to get the individual scenes and PhotoShop to make the gif.
The other trick, though, is that the video I want is all on DVD (or BluRay in a handful of cases).
I have programs that will allow me to rip the DVDs to my computer, but I think the blu-ray at this point will require a screen capture program like FRAPS and cropping to remove the "player" from the animation--very few programs will rip BluRay and fewer still that I can afford. Now if I can just convince the BluRay player that came with my computer to play my BluRays....

Thaks so much for all of the feedback. I never thought of using GIMP. I have a few video converter software packages, but they're not the best at converting to gifs.Β The online ones are doing a better job than them.
Lol! A BluRay player that doesn't play BluRays! Nice!

"I never thought of using GIMP. I have a few video converter software packages, but they're not the best at converting to gifs"
I've never really played much with GIMP, so I don't really know how good it is, just my google-fu to tell me what other people think.
"Lol! A BluRay player that doesn't play BluRays! Nice!"
Oh, it plays some of them--all the Torchwood, the few movies I've got on BluRay, and about half of my Doctor Who (Matt Smith Years) collection... it's the other half of that collection that's annoying me--I only got it working on a temporary basis after installing a (trial) program designed to strip away the protections, because otherwise it'll go through this endless loop with the one program trying and failing to update, and other programs just outright refusing to recognize the discs.
Hoping my new PlayStation (when it arrives) will play them (my computer currently being the only BluRay compatible device in the household), but if it doesn't, that'll just confirm that the problem is with the discs rather than the drive or software, so far as I'm concerned. And I've already contacted BBC America about it, so that someone finds a solution. But what's really irritating is the number--last time I had a problem with one of these sets, it was one single disc that wouldn't work because it had gotten scratched in the case, and I was hoping this one would still be a matter of replacing one or two discs, but... eight BluRays out of a set of sixteen? And not even all of them together, like maybe the earlier ones had different encoding than the later; no, it's disc 2 of this season, discs 1 and 3 of that season, and so on.

No I've haven't done much with GIMP either but it seems you can do a lot with it. I might look into it.
UGH! I hate the concept of geo-blocking and regions. It's so stupid. They must know that there's a work around and that it just annoys people.Β I'm sure your Playstation will play them all without difficulty.
Oh that's really annoying. We just got this new box for the tv that you stream stuff from the internet. It has every program and film imaginable as well as all of the pay-per-view sports channels all for free. I don't need to look at my boxsets on disc anymore. I just watch them on the stream.

"I hate the concept of geo-blocking and regions. It's so stupid"
I feel the same way, but this shouldn't be a regional block--the eight discs that won't play came in the same set as the ones that would.
Playstation played them just fine, but that was the only thing it did for me--Sony pulled the same dick move again with removing backwards compatibility (and the whole reason I wanted a PS4 was because my pre-owned PS3 had to be junked due to overheating, and you can rarely get a new PS3 anymore), so I reformatted the thing and took it back to the store. If I'm going to pay extra to play my BluRays, I'll just update the software on my computer (now that I know the upgrade might be worth investing in) and still save $300. Or buy a regular BluRay player.
"They must know that there's a work around and that it just annoys people"
I mentioned something like that to Digital Theatre in regards to their anti-piracy restrictions--if I have to be online to play one of their download/stream-only productions, can't even burn it to a disk, all that does is compel me to look for a pirated version so I can play it anywhere or just not watch it to begin with; neither option compels me to pay them. Translation: those restrictions don't prevent piracy, they encourage it.
"I don't need to look at my boxsets on disc anymore"
Sometimes the discs have bonus features.
"I just watch them on the stream."
I wouldn't mind the download-only stuff if 1 I know it's saved to a cloud so I can free up space on my hard drive without permanently losing whatever I bought and 2 it wasn't streaming. I want the option to watch what I bought even if I don't have a reliable internet connection... like this time my parents and I went on a trip and we tried to watch Avengers with some friends, but the hotel's WiFi was so lousy that the movie kept freezing within the first five minutes.

I see with you mean if some work and some don't in one box set.
That not being backwards compatible thing is such a scam. If you've been good enough to buy their stuff already, they should reward you for it.
"Translation: those restrictions don't prevent piracy, they encourage it.
Yes! Exactly.
Oh yeah I forgot about the bonus features. The Lord of the Rings bonus material in particular was expansive and fascinating.
I don't watch too much tv anymore though so when I do, I usually just watch the shows.

"That not being backwards compatible thing is such a scam"
And to think, backwards compatibility was what used to make PlayStation the best system.
It'd be one thing if it was just the physical media that I couldn't play--I don't like buying the same games all over again, but I'm willing to if I'm just transitioning to a cloud-based or downloadable version (I'm doing the same thing with books anyway )--but that my Network downloads aren't compatible? That's the part that pissed me off.
""Translation: those restrictions don't prevent piracy, they encourage it.
Yes! Exactly. "
Spoken as a Computer Science major at that. Some of those protections are very easy to work around. (Pity I don't still have the homework assignments I'd done on the subject.)
Still, I'm waiting to hear what BBC support says regarding the non-playing discs before I resort to installing a permanent workaround. It could still be faulty software on some of the discs rather than a deliberate choice to use different encryption.
"Oh no! Buffer face!!! (see below)

Very true. they made their name on it, and wrote Nintendo almost out of the market because of it.
The music companies tried to ban people from converting their cds into mp3s but the court ordered that the person had already bought the rights to the songs and was therefore free to convert it if they so chose. I think that should be the way of it. Once you buy it in one format, you've paid for the right to use it in any way chosen.Β Obviously there's no profit in that for the big tech companies though, so they're going to go out of their way to make it difficult.
I know a few of those workarounds myself, but generally if I really like an artist's work I buy the stuff to support the artist.
I'd be interested to hear what the Beeb (BBC) have to say about the discs.

"but the court ordered that the person had already bought the rights to the songs and was therefore free to convert it if they so chose. I think that should be the way of it. Once you buy it in one format, you've paid for the right to use it in any way chosen"
Completely agree.
I'm willing to pay out for an extra copy of certain things to have the conversion done well, such as downloading a made-for-Kindle ebook instead of trying to scan all the pages in myself, and even with my CS classes I don't have the know-how to convert all of those physical games to a compatible digital-only format, but that makes it a question of personal ability rather than permission.
"Obviously there's no profit in that for the big tech companies though, so they're going to go out of their way to make it difficult"
There would be a profit if they offered this sort of conversion themselves--even Amazon allows (on some books) for you to buy the ebook at a discount if you've already bought a print copy from them, and Sony Japan apparently had this "passport" system for the PSP to let customers buy network downloads at a discounted rate if they already owned the physical UMD.
But no, so many of these restrictions are built around assuming everyone is a thief and penalizing the paying customers along with the actual pirates; it isn't my fault the software can't tell whether I legitimately own that disc or if I only borrowed/rented it but it looks like that's what some of these restrictions are about... the software being unable to tell the difference and the programmers making assumptions.
"I know a few of those workarounds myself, but generally if I really like an artist's work I buy the stuff to support the artist."
Yup, got a couple of books in that category--bought the ebook for reading and I have autographed print books.
And I'll have more such print books when the next book in each of two trilogies comes out, and I am able (in the case of one series) to go to Comic Con again.
"I'd be interested to hear what the Beeb (BBC) have to say about the discs."
Still waiting to hear back.

Yes I see what you mean.
I see your point, and there are several companies out there doing just that... making conversion software, and making good profit on it. Supply and demand. If there's a demand, there will be a successful business in it, but the games manufacturers aren't making those profits (unless they own the conversion companies, which they may well do.)
The main difficulty is mass producing software to be compatible on several platforms makes it more difficult to add software that is more individually based. there could be ways of doing it, but it wouldn't be worth the amount of programming required, so they generalise and I'm sure they have bean counters who weigh up the balance and allow for a certain amount of losses due to piracy in their calculations.
Ah cool.
I thought they'd be more efficient than that. They're normally pretty efficient to deal with. I hope you get it sorted anyway.

"The main difficulty is mass producing software to be compatible on several platforms makes it more difficult to add software that is more individually based....wouldn't be worth the amount of programming required, so they generalise "
Oh I understand that, believe me. Doesn't make the result any less annoying, though.
"I thought they'd be more efficient than that. They're normally pretty efficient to deal with. I hope you get it sorted anyway.""
I think they were more efficient the last time I had a problem... but the last time was a single disc that was badly scratched due to some issue with how it was packed rather than half the set. And they have asked for a mailing address just in case "if the return meets the criteria"
Worst case scenario, I have no compunctions about installing a decrypter (since it would let me rip video files for those gifs I want to try anyway)... or, of course, upgrading the pre-installed player now that I know the discs "work." All I'm waiting on is finding out whether it will come to that.
