Dammit! I guess I still have to comment on your profile then...

What I was trying to say was that when I say tribe, I mean each individual species. Earth ponies, Unicorns, Pegasi, Gryphons, Zebra and any other species that might exist in the Ponyverse. I refer to each one as a tribe.

Is there any non-political mingling between the tribes in your headcanon? Do any of them interact with each other in a non-hostile way at all?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Strike-art In reply to SagelyByMoonlight [2014-02-23 12:12:29 +0000 UTC]

Well that means I can't divulge much without revealing spoilers to the rest of the world but I'll do my best.

Sadly this was the darkest period in Equestrian History as at that time everyone was at each others necks! The Pegasi believe they can take what they want with a knife! The corrupt and inept and if I may add rather dumb Ponitalian Council keeps pushing the unicorn race into loads of confrontations. The Zebras, Minotaurs and the Earth-Ponies just want to be left alone in their little world. And the Griffons NEED slaves or their way of life as they know it will DIE!!!

So yeah everyone has some of their own reasons why they should NOT be friends with anyone else! Sorry

Aww...

Huh. So it's like the Ponyverse equivalent to the Dark Ages? A time before even the unification of the pony tribes? Interesting! I've honestly never seen anyone delve into the Ponyverse's past like this before. The Ponitalian Council sounds a lot like a certain Congress I know of.

>Implying they've ever done a half decent job.

Yep! Other than the whole enslaving other sentient, sapient creatures for their own benefit stuff, what's gryphon culture like in your headcanon? What makes up who they are as a species?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Strike-art In reply to SagelyByMoonlight [2014-02-23 15:13:53 +0000 UTC]

Alright well, other than the information I have already given you in an earlier comment here's some other stuff you may wanna know:

1) Griffons are monotheistic. They believe in a supreme deity named Baal'Ehran, lord and creator of all Griffons and the world.

2) The Eastern Lands used to be divided just like the Pegasi City States, however unlike the Pegasi who needed a full blown civil war to be united the Griffons got united through commerce agreements and diplomacy. Each city has a Noble family to act as a representative and discuss issues within a Circle called the Pillars of Society. The main ruler are still of course the royal family headed by Queen Gildeus the Miserly.

I wanted to write number 3 but it completely slipped my mind!

Hope it answers anything you've asked.

SagelyByMoonlight In reply to Strike-art [2014-02-23 15:48:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh it has. My gryphons are mainly sun-worshippers. They see the sun as the source of all life and energy in their world, and because of her control over the sun and power over the day, a lot of them revere Princess Celestia as a goddess. There's more to it, but I didn't wanna bore you with the details.

It's interesting that your gryphons are diplomats who don't seem to use war as a means to get what they want like Pegasi. In most interpretations of gryphon society that I've read about, they're ususally the aggressors. Though, going back to the point of slavery, the point can be made that they ARE agressors, since I doubt a tribe would willingly submit to the will of another.

What's Zebra culture like in your headcanon?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Strike-art In reply to SagelyByMoonlight [2014-02-24 07:46:32 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, was asleep like sleeping beauty Β

The griffons can be quite dominating it's just that they rather not kill their own kind

Zebra culture is quite similar to the native African culture. Unlike the other races they are shamanistic where they believe in the spirit world Β .They're renowned for their traditional medicines and potions that can cure almost anything (and can make you grow wings, turn lead into gold and increase sexual attraction and libido Β )Β .Unlike the Earth-Ponies who wage tribal warfare they are rather peaceful in most part, the only warring tribe being the Kurrii lead by Queen Zecora the First.

Hope that answers it, any other questions???

S'okay! Sleep is good, though I'd rather not be sleeping like her.

I get it! Preservation of life and all? Speaking of life, how do your gryphons conceive? Are their babies born live, or do they lay eggs or agates? Mine have a special ritual they have to go through involving the cold, a daytime hunt and a mating flight.

My zebras are almost exactly like that. They honor their dead with simple offerings and celebrate the lives of the departed with parties and a festival held on a night during which they believe the spirit world and the physical world are close. They despise necromancy and anything having to do with disturbing the graves of the dead, as they believe it angers the spirits and brings bad luck to the families and friends of the dead.

Their philosophy only abides war as a means of necessary defense if diplomacy fails, but of course there are those who twist that philosophy to suit their own goals, like Queen Ashanti of the first Mountain Dynasty.

Well out of all the options I would go with egg laying!

First off they have to find a soul mate, bond for a few years and then get married (with ceremonies like a bonding flight and such).

The Female Griffons tend to lay an unfertilized egg every 5 months. In order for the egg to get fertilized they have to do this in between the laying period:

Β  Β

When it's close to hatching time (yet another 5 months) depending of the wealthiness of the couple they either invite their closest friends and relatives, or invite the whole town to celebrate!!! Β

Hope that answers it! Any more questions???

SagelyByMoonlight In reply to Strike-art [2014-02-24 19:18:25 +0000 UTC]

That seems like a pretty extensive mating ritual. But then, gryphons are exceptional creatures, so it makes sense that they'd have an exceptional method of concieving. My gryphons' way of conceiving is a bit more anatomical, but their courtship is exactly the same as yours.

See, a gryphon's normal body temperature is pretty high, let's say around 115-120 degrees. This wouldn't be a problem, except that high temperatures make sperm dormant. This is true for all sperm.

This means that the Laird has to lower his body temperature enough that his sperm will become active. He does it by either resting in a cold place until the Lady is ready to mate or (much more commonly) flying high into the air and performing his mating dance in the coldness of the night sky. He instinctively knows when to come down.

For a Lady, conditions have to be just so for her to be fertile. Just like with ponies, it has to be at a time when she's in season. When that time comes she has to hunt and eat a lot of meat. The abundance of food tells her body that it's the right time to produce the magical substance that forms agates, which are what her babies will hatch from. Once all these conditions are met, the couple will have a mating flight. About a week after she's received the Laird's seed, a healthy Lady can lay up to three fertile agates at a time.

Strike-art In reply to SagelyByMoonlight [2014-02-25 05:48:33 +0000 UTC]

So your Griffons tend to mate through instinct I see, interesting. And they hatch through agates, in my knowledge that's a hard rock!

It's usually the older griffons that tie the knot as they want heirs. The younger (or the more unfortunate) ones tend to gravitate to slave brothels as they're surprisingly cheap and they don't have to be tied down to responsibility (female griffons are quite demanding).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SagelyByMoonlight In reply to Strike-art [2014-02-25 08:58:27 +0000 UTC]

Agates are semi-precious stones, yeah. Theirs are smooth and egg-shaped, and the Lady lays them as she would an egg. When the gryphlets hatch, the parents keep the shells and crush them into a fine powder, which they later
spread over the babies' first meal of fresh meat. The added nutrients help the babies grow strong, and it's also believed to bring them good luck in life.

I like to keep my gryphons as close to folklore as possible without completely relying on it, that's why they hatch from agates. They don't make their aeries from gold for example, but they do still fiercely guard their homes, especially when they have gryphlets to protect.

And my gryphons mate as much for fun and pleasure as they do by instinct. Intimacy like that is a great way for life-bonded gryphons to grow closer with their mates, and for young gryphons to release sexual tension. Their biology's failsafe keeps unwanted nestlings out of the picture.

Wow. That got long! Sorry for the tl;dr!
