well, in my biased--and really it's biased--opinion, the band can't do without percussionists (which I am), only follwing 1) the director, 2)instructors, 3) the drum major.

our percussionists SUCK... i say that but they got sweepstakes too. lol.
but of the band, besides the auxilaries, they're ALWAYS the ones with the wrong tempo. 
maybe our percussion should take lessons from ya'll's.
