I see on your website that one of your screenshots from X3TC is the Heaven's Assertion nebula background... You know that sector is considered by most (myself included) to be the prettiest sector in the game?

I was also wondering, since you did many of the scene files for X3, if you have any pointers. I haven't found much in the way of tutorials for adding guns and viewpoints to your ship, and whenever I add a main viewpoint to my ship, it always ends up being about a meter behind and below where I had originally placed it by the time it gets into the game. Do you have any pointers?

That's nice to hear If you go back and look at the sector designs for XTM (I did most of those as well), you'll notice my style for sector design tended to lean more towards aesthetics than realism when compared to the Egosoft guys. Also goes for the nebula backgrounds, the few I had time to do for TC I tried to make more unusual than the Reunion ones, so that I could use them in a few special sectors.

I was originally going to do the sector design for all of the new TC sectors, but unfortunately didn't have time for it with all my other duties, so there are only a few that I got to do. There's a cluster of them in the SE that includes Heaven's Assertion and runs through the first couple of the Boron sectors down there, and then a couple scattered ones like Legend's Home.

The main key for scenefiles is to always use "Reset XForm" and collapse to an editable poly/mesh before exporting. If you don't do that, there's no telling where things will end up in-game. Also, having some sort of useful naming scheme for the turrets/cameras, so you can easily tell what things are when making entries in TShips, helps as well.

I remember seeing a bunch of screenshots from XTM, and thinking that the sector backgrounds were much more elaborate than the ones in the Vanilla game. I understand Egosoft wanting to make things a bit more realistic, but it seems like such a shame to have removed some of those fantastic nebula and planet backgrounds.

When you say you did a cluster of sectors in the SE of the map, you remind me of Slartibartfast, from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Heaven's Assertion was your Norwegian fjords.

Thanks for the tip, by the way. I seem to recall that I did do the Reset XForm command, but maybe I missed it... I'll give it another try.

The XTM backgrounds had some lower resolution elements that broke down under close inspection, so I didn't even try to convince the ES guys to use them. As nice as the XTM stuff was, for the things that did get used in TC, there was a massive amount of work involved to bring them up to professional standards. Unfortunately there was some nicer XTM things that just didn't get transferred over due to lack priority, some more ringed planets besides the ones in the Solar System would have been nice for instance.

Resetting XForm is always the first place to start with a messed up scenefile, beyond that you pretty much have to play it by ear I'm afraid. I also got used to the ES exporter, so I'm not sure what quirks Doubleshadow's might have.

Too bad. I saw some screenshots of the XTM backgrounds. While they did look really cool, I can see why the ES guys may have found them a bit unrealistic. Also, the ringed planets may make things awkward with regards to making the ship "burn up" when you fly too close to them.

I'll try the reset XForm thing. But I may just have to fiddle around with them until I have the cameras and turrets where I want them.
