Thank you very much for the watch.
Is it fun working with stainless steel?

your very welcome
it's a bit tougher to work than silver plated rings but i like that it's very hard to mark it

I have to admit, this definitely cheered up my relation to steel. (Had a not so nice slip happen with the file today). The toughness has it's perks expect when nothing seems to happen.

eek, files can be a right bugger when they slip, i'm lucky in that i work metal in my job so i know pretty much what diff metals will do when i make jewellery, i've a ton of cheap silver plate jumprigs coming to make some small bags with

I know that all too well. Way too many slips and way too many fucks ups because of it. I haven't even gotten to use my whole arsenal yet! Just the basic flat ones.
I'm just learning how to work metal and it mostly goes good. And it's a lot of fun! It's just those moments after hours of hard work when you realize you fucked up because of a small slip in attention or something else. Mostly they can be fixed, of course but some just cannot.

good quality files helps a lot i've found, also if you want a nice smooth flat surface a fine diamond stone with plenty of oil works wonders
yeah i like working the stuff too, not so much arty things at work but for my own pleasure yeah, i've made a fair few rings out of stainless and even a couple out of titanium >_<
aye it is unforgiving when things go wrong, but if the worst comes to the worst there's always welding lol

The files are quality. My skills with files are far from it. Sadly, stones won't work all too well for most purposes. It doesn't remove enough and it's slow(plus it kills your freaking fingers! I got several "flesh wounds" on my fingers which sting nasty with the petrol/oil combination we use with the stone). The surfaces we progress are so small that even with the stone you will not have all too easy time getting it nice and flat. Pictures speak better than words so: tapola.deviantart.com/art/Watc⦠the dimension of those tools are 130mm by 6mm(the smaller one is 3mm). Mostly done with a file. I ruined one of the small ones as I just didn't managed to get the surfaces flat with the sand stone.
Mine will end up being artsy eventually. Comes with the trade and I'm so looking forward to it even though there will be hundreds of painful hours before I'll be there. It'll be worth it! Coming spring I should also be able to take a course to learn basic jewelry making, which I'm looking forward to. So far I've had the pleasure to deal with brass and few different kinds of steels(hard or harder).
I don't think they'll let me use the laser welder quite yet. *giggles* I think it would make filling up the messed up holes little too easy in the end.

looking at them they look like little drifts(metal chisels) are they? i don't know if you are going to harden and temper them, if you do, what i was taught was to do the harden and temper then do the sharpening on a grinding wheel, a very fine freshly dressed one, i find it easier that way than trying to keep a file level over such a small area
haha yeah, making holes is a good way to learn

I don't think that's right. The tip is like a pyramid(three equal sized sides). From what I've understood they're necessary tools for repairing clocks. Once you drill a hole the tool is put into the hole and you twisted to removed excess metal and remove the sharp edges. Also it can be used to make markings on brass(and other softer metals) to have a sign where you need to drill.
I believe it was already hardened and tempered. First we had to heat it up with fire. Once the right temperature was reached we cooled it down with water. Now the file slides off from it and it's been hardened. Clean one side and to see the tempering color(light yellow) and let it cool off. Clean everything of and do the rest. Sound like hardening and tempering to you?
It might be easier but I don't think you can get quite as flat as we were supposed to get these. At the same time this is supposed to teach us how to use the file properly, which we will be needing a lot later on. Once me move to the smaller stuff the grinders remove way too much and the item's are way too small to use a grinder on. In the end we're just practicing on the bigger ones so that we don't get quite as frustrated on the smaller ones. Once we're done with these tools we don't get to make anything quite as big as we'll concentrate on actually learning how to fix clocks(Thank god we start with clocks rather than with pocket watches or wrist watches).
In the end it's not as visible as I thought it would be. Tomorrow I'll get to temper it to and I hope I won't mess it up or I'll have to start with hardening again. One student already cracked their tool at the hardening and was mighty pissed about it.

yeah it does sound more like a teaching exercise than actual need for flatness, for something like that, using it to deburr and mark out for drilling there isn't any real need for it to be as flat as you describe, normally i'd expect you to file it before the hardening and tempering as you say the file will slide right over it and you ruin a good file
with practice a smooth/fine grinding wheel you can take things to a very fine flat edge, i've sharpened 1mm drill bits before now without to much difficultyΒ

It's definitely a teaching excessive. To use the tools you don't need such high flatness or anything else. They'll work just fine with less effort. They're just excellent for learning how to use the file as the future stuff isn't going to be quite so forgiving once we get to the gears and other clock/watch parts.
We did file it as good as we good before the hardening and tempering. Once the tempering was done we only used the sharpening stone(I can't think of any other name to call it) to clean off the surfaces. The teacher warned us from ruining our files when we tested out the the metal after the hardening.
It can do some excellent stuff. I had some fun with one today as we're working on extremely hard metal(hardest so far). The files almost seem like they're just sliding over it even though they aren't. The rough removal of the material was done by a grinder and it was pretty smooth after ward. Now I'm finishing it off with the file as I cannot follow the guidelines with the grinder.
I think the grinder works just fine when you don't have to follow guidelines and measurements, which make it much harder. Later on we it's not about doing it by measurements but matching it up with the rest. A grinder wouldn't allow you to remove only little material out of the way to make it match nicely. It'd be lovely if the grinder is all we'd need, but with the small stuff it just removes too fast to be useful.
I give credits for that sharpening. I don't think I'd ever even attempt sharpening that small of a drill bit with a grinder.

They have paid of rather well. Or should I say I'm doomed with the desire of wanting my own little workshop? However, I'm out of school and I got a job that pays bills. So it's a reachable dream of a workshop.Β
Weird things happen as I haven't really been here either until few days ago...
