# About me

Emma Martinson graduated from Lawrence University in 2009 with a degree in English and a minor in music (emphasis on theory/composition).

Emma's passion for photography started alongside her passion for riding horses when she was 12 years old. She participated in photography through 4-H, and took her first photography classes as a senior in high school, using her own Pentax ZX-30 SLR. Her photography centered around horses until she entered college. She began shooting with a Pentax K10D D-SLR and Lensbaby lenses before taking two photography courses in college, under the instruction of photographers J. Shimon & J. Lindemann, who furthered her love of the darkroom and introduced her to photographic theory, view cameras, pinhole box cameras, cyanotype, and her favorite medium format camera, the Hasselblad.

Currently without a darkroom, Emma's photography is largely a passionate hobby, though she works for clients whenever possible. Her favorite tools include her D-SLR, Adobe Lightroom, and family of Lensbabies: 2.0 lens, Composer lens, and optic swap system.

You're welcome! I *LOVED* the glow and radiance of your piece. I'd never be able to do that with oil (or, well, any paint). You could say I'm jealous of it.

Keithss In reply to TolHorse-Studios [2010-02-02 11:06:58 +0000 UTC]

Well...it was a bit of a trial, but I think any one can learn how to do it...don't get jealous, get even by doing it better than me...I've been doing this for a while, so you've got plenty of time to catch up. Those are some beautiful horses...I'M jealous!

TolHorse-Studios In reply to Keithss [2010-02-03 15:12:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, definitely a lot to catch up on. I took two painting classes in college last year, but now that I've graduated I don't have a nice spacious studio to work in. Consequently, I have all the supplies and no where to put the easel... Haha, I am pretty lucky on the horse front, or maybe I should say that my *horse* is spoiled on the horse front!

Keithss In reply to TolHorse-Studios [2010-02-03 15:17:10 +0000 UTC]

Well,,,,maybe he'd oblige you by moving over in the stable...I know the problem. When I moved down here to take care of my parents we converted one of the garages into a studio...it's drafty and tends to be cold, but it functions OK. Hang in there..you'll find a space!

Haha, if it were our barn I'd commandeer a tack room immediately! Eventually I'll get something worked out. Eventually.

Well, in the meanwhile...you have a camera that you clearly know how to use...and lots of equine subjects to sketch...(I wish you lived out here in Santa Fe so I could use your horse-pals for models). You know what they say"Adapt and overcome"...then send out for pizza.

Exactly. Well, if you ever want horse reference photos, just let me know.

Keithss In reply to TolHorse-Studios [2010-02-03 16:05:05 +0000 UTC]

Sure! At some point I need to do some drawings and photos of horses AND riders. Plus I need to get a better grip on midevil and Arabian tack.

TolHorse-Studios In reply to Keithss [2010-02-03 16:14:17 +0000 UTC]

We have horses and riders of all kinds--Warmbloods, draft types, Thoroughbreds, Arabians...dressage riders, hunter/jumpers, and even a western rider or two. When you want to work on it, just let me know what you have in mind. We used to have a resident Arabian costumer, but not for several years. I'm sure there are a bunch of Arabian tack stores online, though.

It might be a while...need to come up with a horse idea for a painting. A pretty girl on a handsome horse is always a good subject...I did one quite a while ago of a girl in a white dress and a butterfly wing cloak riding a palfry/unicorn as she gazed at the Earthglobe she was holding in her lap. She was being led in a procession by an old woman, preceeded by two heralds blowing trumpets on horseback and followed by two grim looking sorts in armor..also on horseback. I MIGHT try something like that again.
I am more accustomed to smaller critters. Up in Denver I worked in a pet store that bred and hand=raised parrots...I used the basement for my studio. It was dark, crumbling(it was in a 100 yr old bldg)and directly below the bird room. So after hours I'd go down there to paint while the parrots would start up their nightly sundown racket...they'd get bored with saying the things we were trying to teach them, so they'd start adding variations of their own..."Hello (interspersed with gargles and shreiks) pretty bird.!" It was like being in the basement of an insane asylum. It was probably the wierdest studio I ever had in MY search for cheap art space.

That sounds like a great scene. And, wow, I can't imagine working around parrots like that. Too funny.

Keithss In reply to TolHorse-Studios [2010-02-03 17:17:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...It was kind of "interesting" trying to find models...although, come to think of it, the painting I'm working on now is based on photos I took there. I did actually find one or two models willing to risk it.
I might want to use the procession theme again...I kind of like the idea of palfry with flowers braided into its mane and some larger horses for contrast....we'll see, I've got to finish the ones I'm working on now first.
I had a pet lovebird at the time who just HAD to be in the middle of whatever I was doing...this meant SITTING on the brush while I was trying to paint....made things a little more of an adventure than I wanted. But his heart was in the right place.

I can imagine. I can see the funny looks *I'd* get if I asked people at the stable to dress up for me. Though I could probably manage it by offering to pay them back with free photos/photo shoots. They're kind of my only business as it is. Have you looked up draft horse braiding? Sometimes for shows and parades they do the most gorgeous braids with ribbons and flowers. I think they'd be ideal for that sort of thing.
Haha, that's really cute. I have a fuzzy cat who likes to "bless" the creative potential of my novels while I'm writing them. Thankfully he doesn't try to do that when I have charcoal out...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Keithss In reply to TolHorse-Studios [2010-02-03 19:22:46 +0000 UTC]

I hope I can remember to look up your messages when the procession comes up as a painting subject. I had a cat who used to bless my art work if I left stuff leaning up against the wall. But he got along with my parakeet(Woofer) who came before the Lovebird(Flandry)...so Kitzer the cat got away with it. I found a lady in Australia that can do midevil costume poses...I should ask her if she can also manage a horse...a kangaroo maybe?

TolHorse-Studios In reply to Keithss [2010-02-03 19:46:05 +0000 UTC]

Only time can tell, I guess! I had this overwhelmingly hilarious image of a kangaroo with Arabian tack on...my day is complete.

Ridden by a girl in midevil dress and maybe a pointy hat....or add in a few scenes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail...."are you suggesting that coconuts MIGRATE?"

I'm not sure what the market is for kangaroo paintings...unless everyone's gotten so bored with cowboy pictures out here in Santa Fe that they'd go for some rootin'-tootin' roos.

TolHorse-Studios In reply to Keithss [2010-02-05 04:16:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't know. It might just be unique enough (and hilarious enough) that it would become one of those overnight sensations...

TolHorse-Studios In reply to Keithss [2010-02-07 04:11:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've been meaning to break down and make an actual website, but I've become rather attached to my blogger circle. If I had a gallery, I feel like I wouldn't be motivated enough to have a blog portion. *shrug* Haha, and no, funnily enough, kangaroos aren't all that common in Wisconsin. XD

We're not exactly hopping-over with them here in New Mexico either...but there are lots of horses. I've taken "Sisters" back to the easel for some tune ups, and I have one other to finish before polishing off Requiem and Lorelei...THEN I can start up some new ones. As they used to say...stay tuned!

After all this I'd BETTER have a horse in there somewhere, right? I'll try not to bellyache about the snow here, seeing as where you're from. I once went to visit a friend in Stillwater...it was like 30 below and the first thing everyone did when introduced was apologize for the weather...but that was across the river in Minnesota.

Do people think it's cold in WI? Just kidding. I never mind the winter weather, then again, I suppose I'm used to it. But yes, a horse is required at this point.

Keithss In reply to TolHorse-Studios [2010-02-08 23:51:43 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm...I was going to do one based on Calypso and Ulysses...kind of hard to get a horse in there, unless it's the Trojan one(beware of Greeks bearing gifts and gifts bearing Greeks). I usually get several started at once, so I'll think horsies.
