receiving criticism helps as much as compliments as I can improve upon it.

There really isn't something that I can point, because every style is unique.. So all I can say is "practices makes it perfect".
So just keep going and don't give up. Do research, look at tutorials, critique your own art, think to yourself "what do I want to change?" and go from there!
