I find working in pencil is really good for roughing things out and figuring out how I even want something to look, and it's especially fun to do sketches in colors. I got a box of ColErase pencils and they've made flipping through my sketchbooks so much fun, it's really just a joy to go flipping through and see all the colors. But I agree, refined work is hard in pencil, especially when it's not your chosen medium. I've seen people do AMAZING things with pencil, but I straight up don't have the patience to fight with the medium. Did it a few times in classes, never again.
I enjoy working digitally for actually coloring works more than anything else, it's so much easier to adjust things and figure out what you want to do with a piece when you have the Undo option.Β

Oh yeah. The undo button is my life now. Every time I try to draw by hand anymore when I make a mistake Iβll actually start trying to press the back button in my head. Hahaha! Then I get mad because I canβt do it. So I just stick with digital now. π

You don't have to take this advice, but this is something I've learned as both an artist and as a writer- Mistakes and failure will teach you more than any success.
It's a hard thing to learn, especially when you're a perfectionist and really want your finished product to look or feel a certain way, but there's no shame in completely restarting a piece that didn't turn out and there's nothing wrong in messing up. It can feel horrendous, even devastating, when something bad happens, like coffee spilling on a sketchbook or a file being corrupted, but the best thing you can do is take a deep breath and try again. You learn more from the failures because they teach you what not to do in a way you can't ignore or brush over, and when those failures compound, they can be incredibly depressing. But when you look back at where you started to what you are doing now after all those mistakes, you'll truly see just how far you've come and how good you really are.
So, try and challenge yourself to not use that undo button, or try drawing traditionally again and forgo and eraser. It'll be frustrating and annoying, but with patience and determination, it will do more to help you improve than anything else.
But yeah, like I said- You don't have to even read this, let alone take this advice. It's just something I felt needed to be said.

Eh, patience is a learned skill.
Get frustrated, get mad, it's totally okay. The main thing to keep at it. You can do it because you want to improve, you can do it out of pure SPITE, all that matters is you keep going at it. Like, don't force it to a point where you HATE drawing, but use it as an exercise or a warm up, like before a run or a work out.
I've been drawing in a semi-professional manner since 2009 and as a non professional since I was stupid little, and I'm STILL figuring things out. Like backgrounds and landscapes, how the hell do they even work????!!Β

I'm trying to make myself learn, cause it's a good skill to have and I do want to branch out as a professional artist, but it's difficult and frustrating and I never feel satisfied with what I make. At least, not yet. Watching Bob Ross paint helps a lot with getting in the right mind set, though I don't use oil paints. Too much of a hazard with a cat roaming the house. XD
