On May 1st I will need to renew as a Super Group! This is very expensive (4,796 points ) and I don't have lots of money. I pay for all the monthly award points myself, because I want to support amazing artists. It is my pleasure. But I could really use help with the Super Group renewal!
Not only will the points you give help the group, but they will help you! Here is what you get if you donate:
10 - 20 points - I will look through your entire gallery and fave the pieces that I like.
50 points - You will be featured with others who donated (with your avatar and three of the pieces I like best from your gallery) on the group page.
100 points (or more ) - You will get separate feature just for you! It will be posted on the group page and in a news article.
If you cannot donate, no worries! If you have any suggestions, or if you would like to donate a prize, please let me know. Thank you for being a part of this community of artists!

Vance! How the devil are you?!
I'm definitely still very much into photography, but in September last year I started at university which meant leaving my camera at home, plus very little free time for idly wandering around taking photos! Am really enjoying university so far, but will definitely be glad to get photographing again in the summer

Ah, seems everyone is going to university these days, haha. One of my best, weirdest friends just left for it in January, school has been much more calm but conventional without him. I hear on many occasions that college is leaps better than highschool/sixth form, both in terms of education and socializing. Is this true?
As for me, same old, same old. I've got a really good hold on my own psychology, and I'm able to control myself and my emotions much more than I used to be able to. I like knowing why things happen, both in me and other people.
Speaking of which, I remember a long time ago you told me about MGMT, and I was rather cumbersome towards it. Coincidentally, just recently someone gave me their CDs, and I have to say, Congratulations is just incredible, perhaps one of the best albums, from front to back. Also their interviews are hilarious.

Yeah university is great I'm really enjoying my course (English and American Literature with Creative Writing ) plus have made some amazing friends here, so it basically ticks all the boxes
Really glad to hear you've sort of 'grown into' yourself more, if you will. Nowadays I find I'm a lot happier in myself, and I think/hope everyone finds themselves at that stage around this age
Ha ha, how weird, I don't really even listen to MGMT that much any more, how times change! However, I'm happy that you've given them a chance at last

Ah, that's fantastic then. I definitely look forward to the environment in college, if I end up going. The high school learning experience makes me nauseous (mostly the teachers and their methodology, not the students). What are you majoring in? I should probably know, considering your courses, but hey, astrophysicists take liberal arts classes, too.
Yeah, in retrospect I spent too much time gathering excuses for my self-perceived personality flaws, but in the end seems that as long as you're content with yourself, there's pretty much nothing else worth stressing about. Whether or not that's another excuse within itself, I'm not even going to bother.
That's a shame, have you at least listened to the new album, though? But I know what you mean, I'm not a super avid Animal Collective fan like I used to be (e.g. making a reference to their music every other sentence ), though I have opened up to a much, much larger range of music since then.

University is great, really You don't realise how much you need your freedom when you're living at home, but once you're at uni you really appreciate it - don't get me wrong, I love my family, but it's good to be independent, I think.
My course is English & American Literature with Creative Writing, it's joint honours. I don't know if our systems are different?
I haven't! I don't know, I'm not sure if I'd enjoy it these days, and so I almost don't want to listen to it out of fear of tainting it xD Is that crazy?! My favourite music as the moment is more chilled out, all Jason Mraz, Justin Nozuka, Eric Hutchinson and Matt Wertz, if you know of them at all? Easy listening music of happiness, I like to think. Though I too believe my range of music has grown. Really shocked about you not being the uber-AC fan any more, that seems impossible! What do you listen to nowadays then?

Oh, I know what you mean. I love having a ceiling above my head, my parents and whatnot, but lately I've been feeling increasingly keen to one day be able to go and do whatever I wish, not in the "omggg I gunna get sooo drunk n party evry nite x'DDD" kind of way, but just in that such independence is something I have not experienced in 16 years. The responsibility would be some how... exciting? Though at this rate, with the economy the way it is, I will be staying at home until the approximate age of 55.
Hmm, I'm not sure if it's the same in the UK, but in the US your major is the general field that you're getting your degree in (broad stuff, like "Business", "Computer Graphics", "Psychology", etc.), and the courses are the actual classes you're taking to acquire or accompany that major. For instance, to acquire a major in Graphic Design, some of the courses you might take are Design Principle, Photography, Studio Drawing, and so on. Here you can also take classes that have nothing to do with your major (which I think is an abysmal waste of time and money, but hey), and I believe that is where the confusion came from.
Haha, I searched up Jason Mraz, reminded me a lot of the radio station my bus driver always listened to Freshman year (which was before I got an Mp3 player, unfortunately). Luckily his song was one of the... two good songs the station played excessively I cannot say I recall the rest of those artists, though. I've probably heard some of their stuff at one point or another, but the names do not ring a bell.
As for myself... I do not even know; it changes very rapidly. Lately, though, I've been very into a mix between ambient, funky, and generally chill stuff Best examples I can give are Boards of Canada, Bibio, and Toro Y Moi (I think you might like him. He actually released a new LP just yesterday. Funky stuff, very contrasting to his first album, though).
Bah, if there's one subject I can ramble about, it's music. I will stop myself.

The responsibility IS exciting! You grow up a lot, that's for sure. Suddenly you have to cook, clean and care for yourself, and I don't know, I've really relished the opportunity! And it's definitely not all about getting drunk, I still don't drink and can safely say I never regret that for a second, I'm way too busy having fun xD And oh god don't talk to me about the economy, is it just me or do our governments seem to want to make any and all prospects for our generation totally unattainable?!
Okay, well then I'm majoring in English (is that right?) and am currently taking classes on fairytales, British Romanticism and writing poetry
I YouTubed Toro Y Moi, not bad, but the kinda thing I'd have to hear several times before I really got into it, though I think his tracks would be brilliant on a movie soundtrack, and I mean that in a good way xD Please feel free to ramble on about music if you so wish, I don't mind

Haha, yes, after seeing certain individuals drunk I can certainly say I will be avoiding alcohol whenever possible, or at least limiting myself from getting that bad. It just looks embarrassing. Plus every standard idiot seems to be obsessed with the stuff If I were to kill brain cells, it'd almost certainly be over a more... interesting substance.
Yeah, the economy is very depressing, and I'm not even first handedly in the midst of it (though I soon will be). The continual cuts on education and stupid plans on funding are really, really disappointing. The amount of money that is spent on the US' defense is just absurd, and apparently it is more productive to complain about oil than to transition into new forms of energy and CREATE JOBS.
Hah, now that I think about it, I definitely see what you mean. Though, to be fair, one of his songs will probably be in a film soon, then his fans will complain about it because he "sold out" and whatnot Other acts I've been excited about are Arcade Fire (who I'll hopefully be seeing in April), LCD Soundsystem, and just a few groups I've heard here and there. Lots of new music to see this year, I'm liking it. Oh, and my musical tangents are more like me going on about how one second of a song is amazing / reminds me of x. Believe me, you don't want to see it

Zorg-One-One In reply to HattTrick [2011-03-10 23:25:00 +0000 UTC]
Oh don't get me wrong, just because I don't drink doesn't mean I'm totally against other people drinking, as long as they're cool with me not drinking, I'm cool with them getting drunk. I just respect people who know their limits, else you're right and they just end up embarrassing themselves O_o And oh yes, what substances would these be?
It's kind of weird how all this economy trouble is coming thick and fast now, it's like our crazy Western lifestyles have finally caught up with us almost.
VANCE, WEIRDEST THING EVER TODAY. I was in H&M (you have that in America right?) with friends and the song you sent came on! It was so strange! Well, it felt strange to me I hadn't realised it was a well-known song at all, hence my surprise (And yes all his 'original' fans will complain when he becomes popular, it's what happens!)
Man I'm jealous, I really want to go to a concert this year, but all of my favourite musicians are American and mostly unknown within the UK so my chances of them touring over here are few xD I bet you could go see them, seems almost ironic really!

Oh no, I totally didn't think that, I was just stating my opinion. I try not to be stingy about things, but I do have a lot of respect for people who are smart about doing stupid things, if you get what I mean. I think it's a much healthier lifestyle than both of the extremes of the spectrum, you know?
Yeah, I definitely see what you mean. It makes me wonder if generation after generation has slugged along with our habits, and it only affected us now, or if it has always been this bad, but not as well-documented. Though I have to admit, with all the uncertainty and critical thinking to be done about our world, it's pretty exciting. It is invigorating to know that as things get worse, revision can nearly be around every corner. I really hope our generation can catch on, get involved, and have the bravery to care. It seems as though the last few generations have just mindlessly trudged along, prosperous or not. (everything I am saying is based on a US standpoint by the way. It may be entirely different in the context of Europe)
OMG TARO E ME PLAYING ON RADIO? SELD OUT! CANT BLEIV THIS. Nah, haha, that's actually really cool, albeit strange, indeed! Apparently he does get a relatively nice amount of radio coverage, and I definitely would not disagree with that. Though I have to ask, what song was it? I do not remember sending any in particular I imagine it would be Still Sound or New Beat?
Hah, believe it or not I actually feel the same way. The bands I like (and bands in general that have less than 50 million hits on YouTube) seem to love going everywhere in the US but Las Vegas. AC has four upcoming concerts, and all of them are in California! It's tantalizingly close, but impossibly far away. In any case, though, I do wish you luck with your concert-hunting

Good, just checking - I find some people have a real problem with me not drinking, and at the same time conjure up this idea of me looking down on them because they do. I'm the same in the respect stakes, there is, after all, such a thing as too much of a good thing, and when people get to that stage it just seems pointless.
And just wow. That has to be the most optimistic outlook on the current situation in the Western world possible. And for that I salute you, I honestly do. It's so refreshing to hear such a viewpoint, and I do hope you're right, because something needs to be done, and soon. And believe me, everything is virtually the same here in the UK.
It wasn't even the radio though, it was on a pre-recorded playlist that must be the current 'musak' of the store, which to me made it weirder xD It was 'Taramak' you sent me I do believe?
I wish you an equal amount of luck in your quest for live music also

About the optimism in my original insight, I completely agree. But pretty much all talk of politics and current affairs in real life consists of me being sarcastic and cynical, so it's good to be hopeful at least some of the time. Unfortunately, and somewhat ironically, the day after you responded to this, the people in my US History class completely proved me wrong of any hope our generation has or ever had. (this will be a little long, but you might enjoy it/pull out your hair in anger, I know I did).
Basically, we had a substitute teacher in the class, and other students used that as an opportunity to unleash their grievances held to our actual teacher (mind you, I think she's actually an amazing teacher; not only does she thoroughly teach history AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO OUR TIME, but she ALWAYS ties it to and talks about current events, which is possibly the most important thing to do in a class like that. Most history teachers, in my experience, only teach marginally useful vocabulary, so you come out knowing every word of the Constitution, but absolutely no knowledge of current state of the world, post-1800s)
Anyway, so you can obviously guess that lately she's been talking about Libya a TON, since it is one of the most important events going on internationally. Well, among these peoples' grievances, not only do they go on to complain about the fact that she talks about current events (because being completely ignorant to the present world is much more desirable), but they go on to complain about her talking about Libya, asking for opinions and such, as they claim that is has nothing to do with both the US (FUUUUUUUUUU) and the Big Stick Diplomacy (which is a term from what we're learning about currently. It basically stated that the US had both the force and ability to intervene with/defend another country. TOTALLY unrelated, right? Not, you know, COMPLETELY RELEVANT IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE). After that point it basically became a circle jerk of insulting the teacher and her methodology.
I can't express my rage over a field of text, but I guarantee you I was bordering on going insane at that point. The second they said "Libya has nothing to do with the US or History. We're not learning anything", I felt like throwing a textbook at each one of their faces, individually. I'm by no means well-educated on the world (which I'm trying hard to fix), but that kind of stuff is just unparalleled. If our whole generation thinks like this, we are completely screwed. I disregard what I said to you earlier. Apologies for the length of this, by the way, I just think it proves a point on many levels.
Oh, well that's even cooler I'm glad that more people are getting to know him / advertise him, even if it's just in a clothing store, haha. Thinking of him as elevator music, though, is actually pretty entertaining, if not fitting.

Firstly, apologies for taking so long to get back to you!
Secondly, whoahhhh. Some people are really, really narrow-minded. I mean, ridiculously so. I'm sorry to say it but that really plays up to the American stereotype (I'm sure you're more than aware of the YouTube videos of interviews with Americans being asked about the rest of the world and failing epically)(Feel free to make some hilarious comment about us English types and our top hats by the way, seems only fair!), and is more than a little... depressing? Disheartening? I don't know, something along those lines. Your History teacher sounds great, and I'm glad to hear that you at least appreciate the relevance of these things! Gah, I share your annoyance at the lack of intelligence of these people, ha ha!
I think he'd make great elevator music, and I mean that in a positive way, his songs seemed to have a really chilled out vibe and I think that's maybe partly why I can't see myself listening to them on a regular basis, it's almost so...subtle, that it works best as background music, kind of like, it appeals more on a subconscious level?! Ahahaha, I feel I may be overthinking this a bit much and getting carried away now, but it is late so...that's my excuse xD

HattTrick In reply to Zorg-One-One [2011-04-02 18:37:25 +0000 UTC]
It certainly is depressing. Unfortunately, despite my cynicism (or pessimism at this point), I always tease the fact that I am very wrong, and that people are actually intelligent, but are just too afraid to show it. However I always get proven wrong, by some degree. As for stereotypes, it definitely is accurate, though I'd say it varies immensely between different locations in the U.S. I just happen to live in (as far as I can tell) one of the most superficial city in the world.
In terms of English stereotypes, I never actually believed those obsession with tea / top hat type ones Whenever people abuse those, I just think ignorance. The only thing I've ever considered to be quite common among English people (online, mind you. Probably different in real life) is that they feel very entitled to their nationality. So many times I've seen someone from the UK arguing with someone from the US, and believing purely that the fact that they are from the UK makes their opinion more valid. Going along with that, unconditional hate towards the US and its people are quite frequent among those types, as well. It's like, I know the UK on average is smarter, has a better education system, etc. But saying "I'm from the UK. You are from the US. Therefore, I'm correct," is definitely not a way to express it, you know?
By the way, I actually went to a live music show last weekend, and am seeing another today It was rather interesting. Five rock bands from Japan. The contrast from last seeing AC, with their lack of banter / heavy electronics to seeing almost non-electronic music with lots of talking was intriguing. Also, loud, fast rock music + super introvert who digests every sound = petrification. I literally felt like I couldn't move.

Well...well done you for your faith in humanity I guess xD Just a shame you always get let down! You raise a good point though, I hate it when people feel they need to act way more stupid than they actually are!
Really? But the men here really do all go about in top hats, and the ladies in hooped skirts! Ahahahaha, maybe not, I wish people wore top hats out and about though, would be amazing!
And oh god, yes. I'm afraid to say that's not just an online thing, it's very much a part of the English frame of mind. It's ridiculous if you ask me. Colonial Britain is history. At least, the golden days of the empire are. Yet people still think we're somehow better than other nationalities... It really annoys me when English people go abroad and just expect foreign people to speak English, or expect English cuisine to be available everywhere! Kind of linked I think. It bugs me so much!
And that is hilarious, bless you xD Sounds like it was a good kind of terrifying though!

Sorry about being so late on this message, it's not that I'm trying to disregard at all, but I honestly just have nothing to say
However, I will say that I am sad to know that many English people in general are like that, I would have thought it was only the ignorant bunch that seem to linger on the internet. Though everything you said to describe them is also, obviously, present in some elitist Americans, too, which makes me even more angry. But I will not get into that. I just wish more people would hate the U.S. Government, as opposed to the U.S. Citizens, because there are so many things that, despite popular opinion from the people, the leaders insist on doing.
Speaking of that weird introversion stuff, by the way, I recently had a job interview, and that was even more awkward, haha. I was astonished at how much of an ego contest it seemed to be. It's a challenge to list your 'strengths', and NOT laugh at how exaggerated and fake it is at the time. I'm sure it'd be much easier for everyone if we were just allowed to say, "I need money and job experience, that's it. Also, you do not need a college degree and a 2 year history in the work force to put clothing on a shelf."

I also apologise for the late reply
Unfortunately there are a lot of people like that, but don't go thinking all English people think that way because we really don't xD
Whilst we're on the subject of the U.S. Government etc., can I just say, whoah. Things must be crazy over there right now! Or at least, last week. Or have things pretty much returned to normal after the whole Bin Laden madness?
Ahahaha, that made me laugh, but it's so true! Need to find a job myself once uni's over for the year and I'm dreading the whole interview and application process! Let me know how you get on, hopefully you'll find somewhere that isn't looking for a big ego and unnecessary qualifications!

On the subject of the Osama Bin Laden situation, surprisingly it has actually been rather tame, given what his death has been prioritized as for the last ten years. The day after the news hit, it was all people were talking about, but after the fact, it kind of died down, almost astonishingly so I myself am still pretty skeptical towards the whole thing, and, although I understand the implications of the event, I think such a big celebration of the death of a single person is kind of hilarious / scary.
Egoism vs. Realists: the match of the century. No, but really, it turns out I didn't get accepted for that one I was talking about (big surprise, haha), but I hope to get a job at an introvertedly social place over the summer (e.g. a bookstore). High hopes, but who knows? I wish you an equal amount of luck in this crazy job market o.o The question between going to college or trying to get experience in the work force have had huge conflict with my lately. Confusing stuff.
By the way, I have another suggestion for music that you may or may not like. They're called Broken Social Scene, and it's a really cool mix between cheesy indie rock, ambient, folk, and bits of other random genres. I actually avoided them for the last 2 years or so because their name lead me to believe that they were a punk/goth band A bit stupid on my part. Anyway, my favorite songs so far, that you might want to give a listen are
"Fire Eye'd Boy" (standard indie rock crap, though very addictive)
"Feel Good Lost Reprise" (mushy lovey stuff, but really good, in my opinion)
"Capture the Flag" (literally, what I think a dream sounds like. A bit melancholic)
"Pacific Theme" (a transition from a cheesy stereotypical tropical theme to... a cheesy contemporary tune)

Zorg-One-One In reply to HattTrick [2011-05-16 12:19:46 +0000 UTC]
I too am pretty sceptical towards the whole scenario, and the first thought I had upon hearing the news was that this is going to come with some pretty big repercussions. And that scares me.
A book store sounds like a great idea What are your plans regarding college then, or undecided as of yet? (And I get confused, is college like sixth form or university?!)
Wow I love Pacific Theme! Have had it on repeat pretty much all morning. It sounds like summer And Capture The Flag I also like, sounds perfect for falling asleep to xD Plus the I love the video

HattTrick In reply to Zorg-One-One [2011-05-17 05:10:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the whole thing seemed a bit shady initially, I mean, the general idea is that you'd usually show the hard evidence, then celebrate. But if I say the sky is green, that doesn't make it green. (though that's not really that good of an analogy for the situation. How about this: "The sky was green at precisely 6 this morning, but due to the obscene nature of it, we dispersed chemicals throughout the atmosphere, causing it to appear blue again. No one saw it by the way. Photos? Maybe later. It happened, though. Pretty cool, right?"). Also the throwing the body in the water thing just reeks of suspicion (tempted to use the word 'fishy'). But hell, who knows
Isn't it? I'm a bit doubtful that I could get such a job as a first experience, but I think it is quite a nice archetype for ideal entry level jobs. As for college, I honestly still have no clue. On one hand, jobs are scarce and it is a good opportunity to get higher education (because what else is there to do), but on the other hand, it costs a lot, burns through ~4 years of life, is incredibly stressful, and does not necessarily yield a static, worthwhile result. I would like to prioritize experience over possibly trivial education, but at the same time I don't want to completely give up my goals and run in a race of (gradually higher paying) grinding jobs. As for your question, as far as I know, college is simply translated to university. I believe sixth form is basically the equivalent of high school in the U.S. Jesus, typing stuff like this is sometimes so weird, it makes the future seem like such serious business, haha. There's no way I can truly know what life will be like 2 or 3 years in the future.
Blah, anyway, I'm curious, what are your career plans post graduation? I know you are focused around English, but do you have anything in particular in mind?
Hah, excellent! I'm glad you enjoyed it Pacific Theme definitely has a strange effect to it. Very sweet, almost bittersweet. Sometimes songs like that seem vaguely melancholy, simply because of how upbeat they are. It's like trying to cherish a memory that never was. If you liked those two, you might want to check out their entire album "You Forgot It in People" (which contains both of those tracks). Plenty of great work on it.
