Might I suggest checking out Avatar: The Last Airbender?
It is one of my all time favorite things in the history of the world, and it has an animation style very similar to Voltron: Legendary Defender-- and I might even argue a little bit smoother too. Amazing storyline and even better characters, and it tackles a lot of difficult things that aren't talked about as much-- such as verbal/mental/emotional abuse of a minor, which even though still child abuse/abuse of a person is usually overshadowed by the issue physical abuse, and the finding of ones self while growing up and learning to do things on your own. The best part: none of this is done in a cliché way. It features also the issue of sexism in a few of the episodes, telling us that women can be just as good as the men, and are even capable of overpowering them. It features a true psychopath, not one that has been grossly distorted by Hollywood and the media, which is very, very refreshing.
