I see... I want to invest in a macro setup soon as well.
Hahah ja, I don't like it when flies and the like chase me either.

just do it. All 100mm (aboutish) macro lenses of all brands are exceptional sharp. I do use a flash with a diffuser for almost all my shots. Some are just natural light.
There are only 3 species i dislike: deerflies (but they do have the most beautiful eyes), ticks and mosquitos (but only the stinging ones).

Yes... I was thinking of getting the Canon 100mm f/2.8.
I am on the fence about using a flash though.
Could I get the same desired effect of a macro flash by
using a standard off camera using a bracket rail with a diffuser?

I use the canon 100mm. The non-L. I just adore it
The problem with macro is that you have a very shallow dof. To increase that, you use a smaller apperature. And that's why i use flash.
I first used the popup flash with a simple diffuser. The issue i got with that setup, is that the lens got in the way. Casting a shadow on my subject.
After that i used a 430EX II which i put on a L-bracket with some ballheads to direct it. Works really well. But is a bit heavy.
Last year i've changed the 430EX for a 270EX. Quite a bit lighter and does seem to work just aswell.
As for dedicaded macro flashes. If you can afford it. The MT-24EX seems to be good. The ringflashes tend to give a very flat light.
There is a thread on FredMiranda which has tons of different setups what people use. Really interesting.
Kees.

Ik dank je...
My dillema is that I am curently looking into using a flash for creative purposes in light painting,
but with macro as I understand it is quite a different animal... and I would like to get it right.
I appreciate your insight and I will keep it to memory.

That's why i got a 'normal' flash. It does all what i need. Making a good diffuser is more a challenge, but that's part of the fun
Cheers.
