As an artist, and with so many non-English speaking friends all over the world, here, I try to use them as a bit of the "human symbolic language". In a way, it is a bit like the Mayan pictoglyphs or the Ancient Egyptian heiroglyphs. Think of them as the "fonts" for their language.
Mayan is of a type classified as logosyllabic , in which symbols (glyphs or graphemes ) can be used as either logograms or syllables . They created fluid glyphs, which had artistic freedom on a glyph, but were recognized as distinct syllables of their language.
Egyptian hieroglyphs are simplified glyph forms used in the hieratic , or priestly and in the demotic , or popular, scripts. An interesting technique they used was to write mirror image scripts on buildings around a door. In that fashion, one could read it as you approached a door from either direction.
Language and art go hand-in-hand!
Can you read and translate this pure :devart emoticon sentence?:

Yes, I can see how they would help convey your message without words. Wow, you sure know your stuff about symbolic language! lol. Very interesting! Yes, yes they do.
Oh boy, that's a tough one. I'm not sure I can translate that

Language also influences the way one learns thinks too.
