Yeah, I've gone by the monniker "Ashigaru" for many, many years.

That has something to do with cannon fodder, doesn't it? o.0

Pretty much; ashigaru translates to "light feet" or "unimportant feet". They were peasants conscripted (sometimes volunteers) into the feudal armies of daimyo (lords) in Japan. Basically, what is commonly referred to as "a grunt".
Usually used to fill out ranks, they were lightly armed and armored at first, sometimes with whatever they could scrounge from the area or from the previous battle. Eventually, with the adoption of firearms and tactics, they became the central forces of the armies.
But... if one were smart enough, strong enough, brave enough and lucky enough... the ashigaru could become samurai. It is from this potential that I chose the name. From humble beginnings to greatness.
One such ashigaru (a woodcutter's son) started as the sandal bearer for the shogun. Through hard work and cunning, careful planning and luck, he eventually became a general, regent and shogun himself; his name was Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He was known as one of the unifiers of Japan. He was also the one that issued the edict that only those of samurai blood could be samurai; basically he climbed the ladder and then kicked it over. Not the best role model, but it certainly shows the potential of ashigaru!
