pretty clever comic storyline you got planned for. Your drawing style is pretty neat to look at too!
I like the irony of a african-american(?) cop dealing cases with the harassment and assaults of the fursuiters.
I'd love to know the other characters a little more though!
here, have a +watch and a llama badge. not sure if that's furry enough

So what inspired you to turn furries into a religion for your comic?

autumnlakecomic In reply to ScribblerMather [2013-12-04 14:48:26 +0000 UTC]
Well, I guess part of why I chose furries is a bit mercenary; there's kind of a built in audience for them. Making comics is a lot of work, and it's no fun to think people aren't reading the ones you make.
And I wanted to make a more serious story than my previous gag-a-day comics. I've been very concerned about the fallout from the Tea Party and conservative media, an unwelcome side-effect of their antics being to make bigotry, prejudice, and intolerance almost commonplace in our society once again. A story that shows what that's like and talks about it isn't new, but I wanted to try to tell it anyway.
This kind of story is usually done with aliens or anthropomorphic animals (Alien Nation, District 9, Maus, etc.), as stand-ins for a given minority. I wanted to do it in a different way, and regular human people who wore fursuits as a religion just seemed to work; they'd stand out and be obvious targets for hate, and still have their own tight-knit community, history, and customs. Lots of religions have customs or requirements that may seem odd to outsiders, so it didn't seem to be too much of a stretch, comparatively. And because they aren't actual anthros or anything, it makes them more "real." At the same time, it provides a slight fantasy element that allows me to tell the story without becoming overbearing, preachy, or heavy handed.
Well, that's what I hope, anyway.
M.
