This is going to sound like totally trite advice, but it really came from studying art history. I'm serious. Most people think there's some magic to drawing, but it's really just figuring out how someone creates what you'd call a pattern for rendering a particular object that translates it from 2D to 3D. I just looked at the patterns people were using, compared it to what I saw around me, and that was all there is to it. Start with Caravaggio.
