Nonsense! Your low-poly modeling and texturing is just as impressive as your 2D art- Actually it's inspiring me to maybe post my own 3D work, you seem to have a great range of talent as well Do you know what you want to focus on yet? Or are you just aiming for the jack-of-all-trades startup developer area?

I was aiming for the jack-of-all-trades in the beginning.. but specializing is key in the business nowadays.. so I'm settling for 3D artist.
I'm currently trying to establish my own paint style. The thing that drives me most is interesting environments and moods. I can totally lose myself in them so making them myself would be the best thing ever
What are you currently going for? ^^

That's awesome! I've heard that having skills in many areas is actually pretty desirable for smaller companies. Larger ones however probably value a range of skill, but mostly look for specific strengths to fill specific jobs.ย
After taking my first real Maya course, I've decided to become a concept artist haha. While I love level design, and find my small bits of 3D knowledge very useful, I feel like 2D art is where I'm most comfortable. Also, tons of teachers constantly stating that being a concept artists is one of the "hardest jobs to obtain in the gaming industry" really helped me make my decision to prove them wrong xD. I don't want to specialize in one thing, so I've decided to round my focus to characters, environments, and props. Even though specializing is big in the major companies, I feel like having multiple focuses will help my chances of getting a job .ย
3D is pretty broad actually. I've seen people that focus on modeling, texturing, rigging, or even lighting as a specialty. Knowledge of all of it is obviously required, but I know they have specific jobs for this stuff. Do you know what you like the most?

You have a good point ^^ After being a student for 3 years now already
I've thought of this for a very long time.. I wanted to be a concept artist
as well but lacked the imagination needed.
I thought learning new skills might help me overcome my art block but
it just made it a whole lot worse
I have this problem with pessimism that really forms a tough barrier to
where I want to go. I'm too afraid of what others think of me to fully see my potential.
3D is indeed a broad thing.
I used to draw a lot of people when I was younger so thought character
artist was something that fit me best.ย I've learned I have no patience for
animation or rigging and hope that part of my studies will be over soon.
So concluding this I've struggled to find my passion...
What I like to do most is make props and environments (modeling & texturing).
So if I ever manage, I'd love to be an environment artist.
Falling down and getting back up.. that's what sums up my search for my passion really xD
I hope I can stick to this one now and won't feel down whenever it just doesn't want to work.
I have a lot to learn still and a lot of stuff is conflicting (painting people but loving 3D environments for example).
It might be best to do a little of everything and without knowing it I fell in the jack-of-all-trades thing again.
What I love to do most is working my ass off with a fun crew that's dedicated to seeing things finished.
Without those I get frustrated easily because I'm too serious from time to time.
Directing and leading is something I feel comfortable with but me being afraid of what others think of me holds me back to go in confrontation when things go wrong.
=___=' I'll get there.. eventually
Good luck proving people wrong by going to concept artist xD

I feel like self loathing is a natural part of any difficult creative process haha. "I hate drawing" and "I just want to lie down and die" are pretty common sentiments during the school year for me. ย The thing that helps ease frustration the most is just practice. Practice brings skill, style, and most importantly, speed. I'm a hypocrite saying this, because really I need to be practicing much much more than I do right now. I should be drawing every day! You can do whatever you want, as long as you like it enough to work hard for it.ย
I think that is actually one of the most important things they look for in the industry- the ability to communicate and work within a group.ย Working in a group with other people is actually really helpful. At least for me, seeing other people work motivates me to work more. In other cases, like in class, having other people around pushes me to do better because I have someone to compete with. Sometimes the people I secretly compete with even become friends haha.
Don't worry, you'll find your focus- you clearly already have the passion. ย Also, drawing/painting is very beneficial for 3D artists. Being able to texture, concept, and model things yourself is invaluable! Drawing and drafting skills are super important for a 3D prop/environment artists.ย

jup same here. I always hate doing my deadlines (because they feel so rushed all the time)
Working in a group is what brought me back to my senses. I noticed I love doing what I'm doing right now otherwise I would've never been working so hard in team.
I hope working in a company is slightly different though (as a student some people give up easily and there's not a lot that others can do about it)
Becoming friends with people that you admire is definitely something I do as well xD
I like to surround myself with people of which I know will make it till the end of their studies.
It's also a good thing for having contacts later and a little bit of a social life (or what's left of it.. eheheh)
Let's just stay positive and make awesome things
Who knows maybe we'll end up somewhere great in a few year eh? ;D

Hey! Sadly I haven't been on much lately, the site has been going through a lot of ups and downs and changes, so it's been hard to keep up haha. I will update eventually now that the forums seem to be back in order. Thanks so much for the encouragement, it means a lot! Luckily I don't have a lot of issues with negative or nonconstructive comments, but I will always keep that in mind. The only one holding me back is me hahaย ย (ใ๏ฟฃฯ๏ฟฃใใ

Cool, and yes the last sentence is very truthful, I've chatted to a few butt hurt artists who just don't really get what hard work is ? know? Well I gave them a honest crit they made it out like I was some troll to them lol, I'm just trying to push them..you need to drop the ego, learn as much as you can about your area field in this case - concept art and be making a facebook group for your art or shit...join the MANY art groups there for other feedback when your working on projects/paintings...I get sick of DAs Bullshit sometimes you need to be honest with people, give critiques and tell them to work harder! But I know you're a dedicated person so you will do alright! Seeing how you have improved gives good vibes especially to people who like to encourage and improvement - myself included..I just wish sometimes I could go back in time and tell my stupid self to wise the fuck up when I was in high school but that is not important...what is important to aim for the top and work at shit everyday if you can! I hope my ramblings made sense...people will try to bring you down and those people are the ones who probably gave up, prove to yourself you can do it

bopx In reply to SkaraManger [2013-08-01 05:16:24 +0000 UTC]
Well I mostly mean that I procrastinate too much/don't practice enough when I'm not in school.ย
I'ts great that you critique others and I like to do that as well. A thing to keep in mind though, especially on DA, is that most artists on here aren't really aiming to become a professional artist. Some people just do it for fun, which is fine. I'm looking to enter a professional field, so I'm perfectly fine or even welcoming with an overly harsh critique. Others however, aren't looking to improve. Even people that draw for fun like critiques sometimes, but you should always make sure to ask or determine what the artists intention/end goal is, and then scale your critique around that.ย
I'm glad you see my improvement because I sometimes forget about it myself. Everyone can probably relate, but sometimes it feels like I'm going backwards lol.

Sure lol, I used to do that but then I got into reading books and sold pretty much all my games for personals reason..playing games is fine and all I mean youtubers do it for their job/career and stuff...it is good for ideas and letting your mind cool down after a day of learning/work. Do you like to read about Philosophy? read a lot of books, not just about art but about life in general..
Sure, next time I will have to take into account what you have mentioned here I didn't exactly think about the artist's intentions that much, because of my overzealous mode to motivate them to finish the piece better...haha yeah I guess that could cause them to get a little annoyed. Scaling crits to each artist's criteria/skill level seems like a better option so I will take on board that advice and implement into what I write to people
Well sometimes you need a different set of eyes to look at one's progress the level of progress depends on many factors, one of them being the most important is eating right and exercising mentally/physically each day and drinking a lot of water..Procrastination in moderation! that happens because when you get better at drawing, ultimately it becomes more and more difficult to improve and is what I like to compare to 'lvling up' your art lvl...it can be a grind in some cases but each drawing/character piece you do gets you more exp points

I read books, but usually only sci-fi/fantasy genre. Today however, I played Borderlands 2 for 12 hours straight with a friend haha! It felt good though, because I drew a lot yesterday and I hadn't played xbox in a long time. Usually I feel guilty after playing that much.
