Hey there Catherine,
Thanks for adding djake.deviantart.com/art/Nazyn… to your collection! If you're interested, a bunch more pictures of Nazynn (the character in the image) can be found in the "RP Characters" section of my gallery. More will be coming soon, as she's still sort of a character-in-development and, like you, I'd love to get some feedback and critique on my designs.
While I was here, I took a stroll through your gallery as well, and I enjoyed your work. You clearly have a lot of fun with the images you colour. I had planned on offering some critique but, to be honest, I don't know the software you are using at all. If it is possible, though, you might want to look into varying up your brushes (or switching to an app that allows for different brushes - GIMP being a rather versatile option that is available for free). I have found that brushes are very helpful in defining textures, and thereby giving the drawing a more "tactile" appearance than a simple, round brush. Additionally, though it is possible to get a good texture with a round brush, using a variety of other brushes saves a ton of time.
Anyway, just a thought that you may find helpful; use or discard it as you wish. To close on a contrasting up-note: you appear to have an excellent grasp of colour theory (or a super-excellent natural talent) and a very good eye for lighting. These are things I'm still working on in my own craft, so my hat is off to you!

Thanks for the feedback Indeed I mostly use a soft round brush though lately I have been experimenting more with other options. And thanks so much for the compliment - I know almost nothing about formal colour theory or lighting so anything that looks good is just a happy accident

Happy accident, or natural talent. ^_^ The regularity with which it occurs makes me suspect it has more to do with a good eye and knack than coincidence.

Well I will admit that I'm not technically new to any of this, I just intentionally forgot everything I knew about 30 years ago and have recently been re-learning from scratch (like I couldn't even do a stick figure or put any two colors together with any confidence). Its been really fun relearning everything I knew about visual art through practice and through watching the tutorials and such produced by others. I'm impressed with how much humanity cares about helping each other to learn - even when it costs the teacher more than they earn for their lessons. I think there is still some way to go here - but I'm happy with how things are going in general.

Sometimes., there's something to be said for starting over - particularly if one has gotten into a rut, run out of inspiration, or found that the craft no longer reflects the life/mind behind it. From a certain perspective, I did the same thing in 2013 - switching form primarily working in coloured pencil and ink to digital media. I must say: muddling through the interface and software did me a world of good - as it forced me to re-examine and appraise techniques I had been using for two decades prior. In my humble opinion, my art is much better for it - though it still has a long way to go.
Regarding the prevalence of community learning, I agree. The Information Age is a fascinating time to be alive. Anyone with an interest and a bit of ambition can educate themselves on just about anything - from knitting to neuroscience. This makes knowledgeable persons a valuable treasure. Communities of learning are the natural outcome, as many teachers (who have other jobs and responsibilities) find themselves unable to address everyone individually. Being informal affairs, these often end up far less like lectures, and far more like something out of older days, when one would go over to an aunt's house to learn how to make pies, or go over to grand-dad's place and learn how to tan a hide. These days, those same subjects (and just about any other) are picked up over Livestream, on YouTube or here at deviantART - but the feeling is very similar. In my opinion, given the entropy of personal skill in the 20th century (where people were educated toward a specific role, and conditioned more toward ease than achievement), the global communities of the internet could not come soon enough!

Out of curiosity do you allow others to color you linework (assuming they link to it in the description)?
