I adore this kind of things.. i have a friend that wears all black, and have ideas from the inner magic and that kind of stuff.. really interesting.

vector is the key.

adobe illustrator works with this technique. if you have photoshop or illustrator make a new piece and press "p"
now you can work with the pen tool and you can make free shapes. there are no borders.
