Hey! I'm probably going to pass on the apartment (trying to find the right combination of price + distance from work + space for all my shit), but it was great meeting you and your art is awesome. I love the donut box art (and Union Square Donuts)!! I'll most likely end up in the area, though, so you'll have to let me know if you ever get that projector set up

Oh man! Haha. I have no doubt you've improved (: it's almost hard not to with writing lol. I just love the dynamic between Tiber and Mena in that series of chapters. Do you have anywhere that you post new things? I'd love to see how they've developed.

gurl same. I haven't updated a DA account in like 5 or 6 years, I think. But lately I've missed having a place to share my work and look at other's more readily. I've been rereading Young Lords for the last little while -- still awesome!

Oh wow I almost took it down the other day, too. That old version is a little out of sync with the storyworld canon now (and hopefully I've become a better writer since then!), but I'm glad you still enjoy it

Hey, since you're digging up the fine description details of the Roci's crew, would you mind sharing your findings with me in a note? I can do the same for Roci herself, which I've been compiling notes on, if you're interested?

Hey! I love your updates always <3 your journals are always so upbeat and inspiring! I'm here because I'm learning Chinese and I wanted to ask you some tips on how you learned it you rock so hard! I'm not trying to rush into anything, right now I'm concentrating super hard on mastering the pinyin and the tones. That third tone sure does a number on my throat but I'm getting the hang of it b

dana-redde In reply to Zim-Shady [2012-10-23 18:02:48 +0000 UTC]
Hey! Yay, Chinese! δΈζηζ£γ
The tones definitely take time. My college wasn't very good at emphasizing them, and I'm weak at them in general, so I actually got off the plane in Beijing for my study abroad program after two years of studying Chinese in the US and was shocked to discover I basically had no understanding of tones whatsoever. The program had to give me remedial tones practice ;_; There really is no way to learn them other than to practice and listen, and you WILL pick them up! Rather than worrying too much about getting the right down-and-lift for third tone, maybe try stretching it out? I find in natural speech, third tone usually just ends up sounding slightly more elongated than the others.
Honestly, when you're starting out, it can be very helpful to make the tone marks in the air with your hands when you're saying the words. I also used to go through my work book and mark the tone for every single character. It took some extra time but ended up being totally worth it, especially when I got called on to read out loud
Do you have a smartphone? I just got an iPhone, and there are some awesome apps for learning Chinese. I particularly love MindSnack's Learn Mandarin game. It has seperate little games for learning characters and tones. Since listening comprehension is my weakness, I try to listen for the words and tones. There's also Skritter [link] for learning characters (both computer and smartphone), although I think nowadays you might need a subscription. Old fashioned paper flashcards always work, too XD
Learning Chinese requires a lot of rote memorizing because of the characters, and it can feel like learning three "languages" at once because you have to learn the character, the pinyin, and the meaning, but I found it super rewarding, so I hope you do too!
Finally, the internet has AWESOME free Chinese dictionaries. These are my favorites:
[link] nciku
[link] MDBG
Both allow you to draw a character you want to look up, which is awesome, although MDBG's is sensitive to stroke order. If you fiddle around with your computer's Control Panel settings (for a PC, anyway, I don't know about a Mac) you can add a Chinese keyboard, which you can switch to, so that when you type in pinyin, it lets you pick the characters you want to type.

Thank you so much! That's all so very helpful! I found a website with a program JUST for learning Pinyin that uses native speakers and, my favorite, a kids video on YouTube that teaches the pinyin. She says it first then you repeat while looking at the characters. It's almost like a song LOL I've been watching it everyday for a week or so. They're not nearly as daunting as I thought and I think I got the third tone down now! I actually really enjoy it languages are my favorite
I'm not new to the characters since I've been studying Japanese for years, and they share some but I know there are many different ones b I have my keyboard set up to switch over to Japanese mode so I usually don't worry about actually writing the characters LOL it was immensely helpful in my learning of Japanese although I'm still not fluent *pouts* ONE DAY!!! I'm gonna add Chinese to it now too! ^_^
I'm definitely going to look into those sites you recommended and yes I do have a smartphone although there's like NO ROOM left on it LOL I got it for my dad when he got an iPhone (NO FAIR! haha) and I was so jazzed when I saw that it does pick up Asian languages!!! I can probably store something on my SD card though. Whoo hoo! I'll be in touch You're one of the coolest people I know on DA, do you think I could friend on on FB? if you have one, I know some people like to stay away from it XD I don't like it that much but it's just so convenient XD Just note me. ^_^ Thanks again!

Belated comment is belated, but you are very welcome! I've seen a lot of gorgeous art on DA, but rarely do I find an artist where I stop and go "YES, THAT is what I want to be doing!" like I did with your work. Something about it just really struck a chord with me

That's high praise! And if my stuff gets you stoked about your own stuff, that's the highest praise there is, IMO. When I read my favorite books and look at art by my favorite artists, it makes me want to share my own ideas with the world. And people sharing their ideas with passion and an eye towards creation and construction and invention-- that's when great things start happening. So thank you!
