Awesome gallery highlighting great fantasy saddly overshadowed by Game of Thrones...
Have you ever done any art about the Memory Sorros and Thorne books of Tad Williams ?

Tnx!
Well, George RR Martin had TV show on his side, so that led to the series mass popularity. Luckily, real fantasy fans knows the difference between show and the books, as well the quality of other better book series than ASOIAF.
No, I'm afraid I've not. Is it any good?

Some people are going to have a hard time calling their work epic fantasy after that
I mean, if I'm being truly fair, even Tolkien has been less epic than that. We use him as the ultimate example of the genre, but it's not true : The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion are the founding works of that genre, but they're not its peak anymore.
I'm gonna try the Kharkhanas trilogy I think, if only to meet again with some old acquaintances.

Yeah, Erikson is on the top of the genre, and I don't think we'll read anything better/similar soon enough.
Oh, "The Kharkanas trilogy" is absolutely amazing, if you like Tiste as a race, which means - a LOT of philosophy, slower pace and dark tone through the story. First book "Forge Of Darkness" is a blast, but what's truly is a masterpiece is second book "Fall Of Light". Erikson's best work so far, IMHO.
Sadly, the third book in trilogy "Walk In Shadow" has put on hold because sales for Kharkanas are not so well, and many people couldn't read it because of the writing style (which is truly magnificent, as you're about to see). Erikson said he'll continue with Kharkanas after he finished Karsa's trilogy, and I must say it's the first time I have disappointed in man's decision. But what to do? I'll wait.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2018-11-08 19:58:37 +0000 UTC]
True enough
I've read that people were surprised, because the style was much different from the Malazan books.
Is it that different ?
And yeah, I've seen that he has put the trilogy on hold because it's not meeting its public right now.
But I'm definitely interested in it. On the other hand, I want to expand the roster of authors I've read, so I might try new things before that. Like, reading the second novel of Ed McDonald. Or try exotic things, I've seen chinese fantasy and I want to give it a try.

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2018-11-08 22:26:13 +0000 UTC]
Well, how do I put it - it's basically the same writing style, there's no mistake with it. Only, there's much more philosophy in it, terms and phrases that could sounds strange to a common reader accustomed to Malazan style. It's slow paced read with dark tone, a bit poetic, and many people compared it with "Toll The Hounds" writing style. Sure, it's like that, only on higher level.
For me (as a huge Tiste race fan) "The Kharkanas trilogy" is something amazingly written, both in "Forge Of Darkness" and "Fall Of Light". First one is amazing, but the second is the best book Erikson wrote so far. When I've met Steve few years ago, guess which book he signed to me? That's right - "Fall Of Light". pbs.twimg.com/media/Cwm9i4PXAAβ¦
Now, I really think that you shouldn't have any problem with Kharkanas. After all, it's not that much different than Malazan. It's simply on a higher level. Give it a try, and I'm sure your patience will be rewarded in a most beautiful way.
Oh, yes. "Ravencry" is a bloody great sequel, I'm sure you'll enjoy in it.
I should start these days with the second book in "Empire Of Dust" trilogy, by Anna Smith Spark. The first one "The Court Of The Broken Knives" was true revelation, and I can't recommended it enough. Sometimes I feel she's related to Erikson in some way.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2018-11-11 20:01:01 +0000 UTC]
Ok, so that clearly won't be a problem then
Hahaha, so cool !
When did you meet him ?
Feels like Ravencry has some noir elements to it, so that has my attention. A lot.
I love the mix of those elements.
Right now, I'm reading collections of short stories from Thomas Ligotti. I'd describe it as a blend of gothic horror and existential pessimism, which give it a taste both reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe and HP Lovecraft at the same time.
The experience is fascinating, but not pleasing. You don't feel good after reading it, but you still want to read more

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2018-11-12 22:21:53 +0000 UTC]
It shouldn't be.
Two years ago he was a guest of honor on some Comic Festival for three days in Serbia. Haven't been able to speak a lot with Steve due to shitty organization. Β Everything ended in a two days of lecturing (that was fine, I've heard many clever things tbh), and the third day was meant to be for book signing, which was quite a hell because the waiting line was so long. In the end I get two signed books -' Fall of Light' and 'Toll The Hounds', and I've managed to give Steve all my Malazan prints. He was so pleasantly surprised by the act.
Oh, if you like 'Blackwing' you will like 'Ravencry' too.
Somehow I think I know that very feeling. It comes closely to Anna Smith Sparks's books.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2018-11-17 14:30:25 +0000 UTC]
That's really great
Even despite the shitty organization xD
I don't go to conventions enough, mind you, but with a soon-if-everything-goes-well job, I might finally be able to afford more cool things in the future. Like MORE books, and maybe even commissioning you (yeah, I haven't forgotten, and don't worry, you'll get a prive message as soon as I can ).
In any case, Ravencry is on my to-shop list. Along with a lengthy number of books I heard or read about for a long time, which are all constituting a wishlist on Book Depository
And in that wishlist, there's someone that Anna Smith Spark lists as her influences

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2018-11-19 11:12:15 +0000 UTC]
Yeah! Considering I thought there's no chance to see the man ever it was great. Despite the shitty organization it was a true pleasure to see Steve alive.
Me neither, especially because in Serbia there's no that much convention events, so you grab what you can, as this one with Erikson was.
Sure, more books is always mandatory thing. Oh, don't worry about that. Whenever you think that time has come.
"Ravencry" is a great sequel, and I'm glad, because many writers stuck on the second book and destroy everything they've accomplished in debut book. Luckily, it's not the case with McDonald and Anna Smith Spark.
Yeah, she's an Erikson fan, as I've read in some of her interviews. Her writing style is completely outstanding, and all I'm going to say is that I'm reading these days her second book as slowly as I can. It's that good.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2018-11-25 20:12:58 +0000 UTC]
I can imagine
More books is mandatory, of course
My shopping list includes Erikson (for the Kharkanas books), R. Scott Baker, Ed McDonald (Ravencry), Mervyn Peake, China Mieville, Naomi Novik, Steven Brust, Gene Wolfe and Tim Powers.
Yes, that is quite a list
And the author I was talking about, listed in her influences by herself, is actually R. Scott Baker xD

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2018-12-02 13:25:52 +0000 UTC]
I see, you meant of R. Scott Baker. Ofc. I heard also that his writing style is similar to Erikson's, but never actually had the chance to read it. Hopefully in the future I'll make that right.
Btw, beside McDonald in your reading list I've read Gene Wolfe's "The Book of the New Sun" last year, and although it's beautifly written, I still couldn't found to like epic fantasy / sci fi crossover that much. Same problem I had with Mark Lawrence's "Prince of Thorns" trilogy, and I said to myself - no more crossover books ever. Although, Wolfe is a waaaaay better writer than Lawrence.
I've finished "The Tower of Living and Dying" by Anna Smith Spark yesterday, and I need some time before I move on something else. That woman knows her writing alright.
I expect your thoughts of Baker's series when you finish it.

Have no worries, as soon as that January salary drops, I'm gonna order some of his books and give you a detailed review
Well, at least if it's well written, that gives me a reason to take a shot at it !
I don't think crossovers are gonna be that much of a problem to me, I like weird blends
She'll go on the list when the list start to decrease a little

dejan-delic In reply to Alex9554 [2018-12-09 13:50:01 +0000 UTC]
Deal.
Oh, Gene Wolfe is a hell of a writer. His style is amazing, prose is from another world, but sometimes it could be confusing and ambiguous (mind the story).
Speaking of crossovers I truly hate them all, except McDonald's fantasy/apocalypse mashup. That one is one and onlyΒ in which I truly enjoying.
Trust me, Anna Smith Spark aka Queen of Grimdark is something you simply must read. It's that good.

Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2019-01-20 14:22:28 +0000 UTC]
Ok, so, I used my sunday to finally finish it.
And I have to say, I saw most of it coming, but boy I loved it nonetheless
Even turning little Amaira into a Blackwing was heavily foreshadowed, and it seems the most recurring theme of the series is "deals with the Devil".
I admit, I expected more Ezabeth's return to fry Saravor, but since he had a hold of Nenn and the promise made to Betch, I knew she'd be the one to cut him down in the end, and cutting down she did
But at this rate, there's gonna be a lot less friends alive at the end of the series xD
Now, if I am to guess what the next book is gonna be, well, Ryhalt is gonna try to get back Ezabeth, and it's gonna involve some Misery's exploration.
I have to say, his wandering through the Misery might have been my favourite moment from the book, desert crossing is something that I enjoy for some reason (a few years back, I wrote a short story about some kind of Space Roman looking for revenge on a desert world on space raiders, and I happily threw maiming and cannibalism to add even more grit to it )

We'll see. "Crowfall" is about to be released in June this year, and I'm sure it's going to be crazy. I have the feeling that Ed has left the craziest shit for the last book in trilogy.
π: 0 β©: 1
Alex9554 In reply to dejan-delic [2019-01-23 20:26:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, we'll know soon enough what is left in store
I read his blog a bit, and he said it will be the end of the trilogy, but he might return to that world one day if he feels like it
Anyway, now I'm reading R. Scott Bakker, The Darkness that comes before, and it's quite awesome I have to say. I'm not far enough into the book to tell if the story is really good, but at least his writing is without a doubt.

Yeah, I heard that too. And I'm so glad he decided to stay in genre for new series. Let's just hope the writing style will stay the same.
So it's good? That's what I needed to hear.
