Bah! I don't get on DA so very often these days. That said, although I am several weeks late, I hope that you had a good birthday this year! I also hope that you are doing well and happy, my friend
I wish this site still promoted the interconnectedness it once did...but I still miss you and hope that all is well with you in your life. I miss you sweetheart, take care of yourself

My birthday isn't until a few more weeks.
But thank you for the early wishes!
dA is definitely not like it once used to be. Art used to have a purpose, and those who contributed had a lot to gain and offer to others. Sure it wasn't perfect and there were some issues back then too. It was at least about the quality of the content versus what has become a whored machine. Now it's all about views, comments, and favs. There are some gems to be found here, but they just need to be dug through.

Ha! July...I misread that as June last night, sorry. I have no business being on the internet when it's so late and I'm so sleepy. But it's just as well to send you wishes early, since I'm not around so much anymore.
There were issues before, of course. But as you say, at least it wasn't such a popularity contest all about views and favs. I do still see some good art here occassionally, but I often lose patience trying to dig for it...

I've been on this site for 9 years now, I have seen it change far from what it once used to be. Back then, art required thought and effort. Even though it may not be the best but a great deal of effort went into what was posted. Artists would give critique over techniques and ways to improve. Now it's just "hey look at me, I can move my mouse and call it art" "hey fav me""hey comment" blahblahblah. Those who actually care about art and it's growth don't come here a whole lot. So that said, I don't really see this place like I once used to. Now I just come to dig through and find some great photographers, and visit the box.

oh. that's true. i came here to get feedback on my work, and it makes me a little sad that no one takes the time to stop and say why they like something or tell me how i could be better. i even blocked someone who just blindly faved all of my work. it was kind of offensive that they wouldn't look through my stuff to pick the very best. but i do see lots of great artist here, and i try to learn from them. it's helpful to have so many things to learn from. i try to be selective with my faves and give meaningful feedback... but why only photographers?

djpreach In reply to blankfaceisclaimed [2011-07-11 23:23:04 +0000 UTC]
That is what happens when you get such a huge website like dA. A ton of up and coming artists get looked over for the popular stuff and just the sheer amounts of stuff that gets posted. I could go on for hours about the issues that I have seen here but that's for another time. lol The main thing I can recommend is to just be out there commenting on what you see and what you think could be useful criticism. The more people you know the greater the opportunity to get feedback that actually helps versus someone just saying " I like it".
As far as why only photography, well there's a saying that says that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Painting or drawing requires talent and some skill. Photography can be learned and improved on rather quickly. It still requires having some talent to know what to shot at, but it leaves it more open to capture any given moment and leave the viewer to wonder what the purpose is for. At least that's what I think. Not that I'm hating on other mediums of art, I support all methods. I just have my current preference.

^^ i like photography too. mainly because it can capture a moment in a way that memory can't.

djpreach In reply to blankfaceisclaimed [2011-07-11 23:42:09 +0000 UTC]
That depends on whose memory you're talking about. I can remember certain moments in pretty vivid detail that happened 5 years ago. Yet I can't remember what I had for lunch 4 days ago, go figure lol

blankfaceisclaimed In reply to djpreach [2011-07-11 23:45:01 +0000 UTC]
yesh. that happens to pretty much everybody. but sometimes you can't remember the exact colors or the details of a pattern in someone's clothes. i don't have the patience or creativity to draw patterns either... at least not complicated ones.

djpreach In reply to blankfaceisclaimed [2011-07-11 23:47:43 +0000 UTC]
I can! Mind you it's not like there's a whole lot of those kinds of memories, but I have a handful where I can recall the smell, the clothes, the time of events that happened. It's downright creepy lol Which is your preferred medium?

i do a lot of digital now, but just standard paper and pencil is easiest for me. i like both and they both have their faults, like digital is easier to erase, but harder to color/get the right tone.

Do you have a tablet? I had one and found this to work wonders for the stuff I created. Especially since most can detect the pressure and can dictate the line thickness and such.

blankfaceisclaimed In reply to djpreach [2011-07-12 00:26:50 +0000 UTC]
yesh! i love it so much. it's a really good wacom intuos. a few years old, but still running smoothly. and i don't like having the thickness set on pressure, i just change the width. i have it set up so that the left touch strip scrolls the brush size.

tee hee. it was my brother's but he stopped using it. and now i use it a lot... i love it. i don't let my cousins near it. what sucks is that i have a very old dell laptop. the one thing that bothers me about my laptop is that the screen is small... otherwise,

dubious contents you say?
I don't have a workstation. It's just my laptop and wherever is closest plug. lol
There's other messes but none desk related.
wait, it kind of is. It's just paperwork I have to save or sort through.

I always got frustrated with origami. It could have been the book I was using, but some of the instructions did not make any sense. at all. Though I don't think that is dubious content. A hit list is dubious.

hit list? hmm... i've always been pretty good with origami. i made over a hundred paper cranes, ranging from medium to tiny, but that's pretty basic, and it got really boring.

those my aunt took or i found on the internet.or i uploaded before. i don't have a private cam, and i'm not supposed to be on dA, so asking to use the camera would look suspicious...

Ah, You should probably take a look at the dA rules about uploading pictures that are copyrighted. It's basically a no no and could get you banned if it's a sever issue. Just a warning about that. Mind if I ask why you're not supposed to be on dA?

blankfaceisclaimed In reply to djpreach [2011-07-13 03:18:31 +0000 UTC]
they are all uncopyrighted... mostly stock images, and some that my aunt gave me permission to use. and a couple are mine. my parents are paranoid...
