The first daughter of the Earth Goddess Rhea, and the Agricultural King of the Gods, Cronus, Hestia was marked at birth as the eldest of six siblings. The Moirai prophesied that one of his children would usurp him from the throne, taking his place as ruler of the Gods. Cronus, fearing this outcome, took desperate measures. He gathered five of his children, and swallowed them whole, with Hestia the first to be ingested.
Zeus, Cronus' youngest son and child, escaped this fate, hidden away by his mother.
When Zeus was old enough, he faced his father and slayed him, freeing his brothers and sisters. Hestia was the last to be freed, hence her title as the eldest and youngest sibling. This is celebrated with Hestia being the first to be given special offerings.
