if you mean the outer gods, then personally i like nyarlathotep. azathoth is cool though.

Ahh, but if you get down to it,nyarlathotep is a part of azathoth. in a way nyar** is like azathoth's troubled teen, only a bit older, and a TAD more evil. I firmly belive that nyar** is the only TRUELY evil old one, the rest are just... old ones.

are you basing your opinions solely off of the stories that lovecraft himself wrote? or those of the people after him, such as derleth?

I find derleth far too black and white, no grey area for the old-ones. A writer I do like though is robert block(ch? I cant remember how to spell), as he had a lot of storys on nyar**. there are a few others I read but they stem too far away from the sci-fi feel of the mythos.
