OKAY RACHL IT'S EMERGENCY INPUT TIME

SO I WAS THINKING YESTERDAY "HEY I KNOW I'VE GOT THESE FIVE DISCIPLINES WITH SIX SUBCLASSES BUT WHAT IF SOMEBODY DOESN'T REALLY CARE ABOUT ARCANE, LIGHT, DARK, NATURE, OR TECHNOLOGY AND JUST WANTS TO GET AROUND WITH WHAT THEY HAVE." THEN I REMEMBERED THAT THE DISCIPLINE CLASSES ARE HIGHLY ABILITY-BASED (WITH SIX ABILITIES IN A KIT, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO HELP THAT PERSON FILL A SPECIFIC ROLE), AND THAT PERHAPS THE ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM WOULD BE A MORE WEAPON-/GEAR-BASED SET OF CLASSES, REVOLVING AROUND THE THREE WEAPON CLASSES (WARRIOR, RANGER, AND CASTER).

THEN I THOUGHT "WELL HEY WHY DON'T I JUST MAKE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE OF PROGRESSION THAT FOCUSES MORE ON THE WEAPONS AND STUFF AS WELL AS FILLING OUT A VARIETY OF ROLES WITH A GENERALIZED KIT (ONE PASSIVE, ONE ULTIMATE, ONE OFFENSIVE, ONE DEFENSIVE, ONE EVASIVE, ONE SUPPORTIVE) THAT JUST HELPS THEM GET ALONG" AND THEN THEY WERE MADE OUT OF THE THREE WEAPON CLASSES.

WARRIOR/WARRIOR = FIGHTER (HIGH ARMOR)
WARRIOR/CASTER = CLERIC (HIGH ARMOR)
CASTER/CASTER = WIZARD (LIGHT ARMOR)
CASTER/RANGER = BARD (MEDIUM ARMOR)
RANGER/RANGER = MARKSMAN (MEDIUM ARMOR)
RANGER/WARRIOR = SCOUT (LIGHT ARMOR)

SINCE THE OTHER ROUTE IS CALLED "DISCIPLINES," I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO CALL THESE, UH, UNDISCIPLINES. IF YOU HAVE THE TIME, COULD YOU JUST THROW A BUNCH OF SUGGESTIONS AT ME?

THANKS, MAN.

Things like this (if it's not the main class of the character) I usually just lump with the term 'spec,' but since you're using discipline instead of class, you COULD just use class for these instead...? Or if you are using class you could use prestige instead I guess (wow my 3.5 is showing oops.)
Was that all you wanted input on it was hard to tell with all that capslock!

ItemsGuy In reply to exile-fusi [2011-07-27 05:24:30 +0000 UTC]

Also, by "generalized, gear-based class" I mean "generalized, gear-based counterpart." I should probably leave before I find more slips and typos.

ItemsGuy In reply to exile-fusi [2011-07-27 05:19:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I was pretty much just trying to come up with a name for Discipline's generalized, gear-based class! I can't use class because that's what the six sub-thingies of Discipline are (like Arcane Knight and Fury Shaman etc.) BUT SPEC AND PRESTIGE ARE SOUNDING REALLY GOOD I'll just toss them around in my head for a while until I decide on one. Spec sounds good because it sounds like something one would be good at (thus being able to use the abilities that come with being a Scout or Fighter or whatever), but not something that has been studied or organized any further than that one person's life and occupation. I guess the best way I can compare the two is through the differences between having a hobby and being in a club. When you have a hobby, that's your interest, but it's more self-contained and you're doing it because just whatever and stuff, but if you're in a club, you get the member's only jacket and have to fit within the club.

With Disciplines, I think I may have a house for each in both of the major capitol cities (so one for the Reform and one for the Old Order; Human capitol city and Atlantean capitol city, respectively), so there'd be the House of Light and the House of Technology and that's where you'd go to learn under a master of that Discipline and get the special mounts and vehicles and gear and stuff. Doing that, you'd probably be enlisted in the army for that faction, and you'd earn your specialized gear (which lets you use the abilities in the kit for that Discipline Class, like Chain of Light armwraps for the Holy Paladin and that cool rune tablet gauntlet that the Arcane Mage gets) and mounts and vehicles and all that cool jazz by doing things for that faction, which MAY be a sort of PvP/PvE split (with fighting for your faction against the other faction being what you do under a Discipline, and how you get your Discipline gear, and adventuring and quests and stuff being what you do with your Spec and how you get your more generalized and stat-/value-based Spec gear which is much more flexible than the Discipline uniform and whatnot), although it may not be anything that definite. I guess that makes the real difference here "Fight for your faction and receive cool things that help you fight for your faction because having a Discipline Class is all about filling a specific role in combat, especially against other people that have specialized kits like you do" versus "Go out and do stuff to make a living without being tied down to an organization or whatever, and either get your generalized, stat-/value-based gear as rewards for doing stuff for people or in treasure chests and shit the Treasure Chest Fairy plants in dangerous and inconvenient places (or as drops/made out of drops from monsters and bosses and stuff)." Fighting for your faction would be more low-income but with greater rewards and benefits, while winging it on your own (or with a party/guild) is generally more profitable, but new/cool/useful stuff must be fought for, made, found, or bought.

Just to give you a taste of the work I've done on the six Specs, I'm going to mush it all right in your face.

It'll go like:

Spec (weapon class/weapon class)
Passive
Offensive Skill
Defensive Skill
Evasive Skill
Supportive Skill
Ultimate Skill
"General info about the Spec"

Fighter (warrior/warrior)
Dexterity: % of total Agi and Str counts towards Def
Weapon Throw: Throws any held weapons in a line, dealing (weapon damage + X% of Str) to any targets hit. Activate again to leap towards the thrown weapon, dealing (X% of Str) again to any enemies in the way.
Guard: Enters a defensive stance for (X + Y% of Def) seconds, decreasing all incoming damage by Z (also increases with defense). For *every shield equipped, all incoming damage is reduced by an additional 50%. Guard prevents the Fighter from performing any action (besides cancelling Guard) for its duration.
Leap: The Fighter leaps towards a target destination, dealing (weapon damage + X% of Str) to all nearby enemies upon landing.
Battle Shout: Places a buff on all nearby allies that increases their stats by X% of the Fighter's own.
Last Stand: Temporarily boosts the Fighter's Str, Agi, and Def by X% (2X% if the Fighter is at less than 25% health)
"Fighters thrive in close combat, as their high armor allows them to either be dangerous bruisers that can put out a lot of damage before they go down, or sturdy tanks that can soak up a great deal of punishment on the front line."

Cleric (warrior/caster)
Strength of Spirit: % of Str is added to Wis, % of Wis is added to Str (does not stack onto itself).
Empower: The Cleric's next attack deals a % of weapon damage as bonus magic damage; the Cleric's next spell deals a % of spell damage as bonus physical damage.
Redirect: The Cleric redirects the next attack/spell/skill that hits it towards the nearest enemy, receiving no damage or secondary effects from it.
Fling: The Cleric dashes forwards, knocking up any enemy in its path (dealing weapon damage + X% of Str + X% of Def).
Flash Heal: The Cleric instantly heals an ally or itself for (X + Y% of Wis + Y% of Int) health.
Mind and Body: Places a buff on the Cleric that temporarily increases its stats; % of Wis is added to Int and vice-versa, % of Def is added to Str and vice-versa (does not stack onto itself).
"Clerics, being a hybrid of warrior and caster, are proficient with both physical attacks and magic spells; with their abilities and high armor, they can last a long time on their own or be a powerful supportive ally in a small group."

Wizard (caster/caster)
Wizard's Intellect: Increases the Wizard's Int by a % (does not stack onto itself).
Multi-Cast: Casts a more potent version of the previous spell or skill used.
Mirror Shield: Places a shield on an ally or itself that reflects the next offensive attack/skill used on it. Lasts (X + Y% of Int + Y% of Wis) seconds.
Blink: Teleports the Wizard a short distance forward.
Dispel: Removes all debuffs and crowd control from an allied unit or itself; removes all buffs from an enemy unit.
Refresh: Refreshes the cooldown of all skills.
"Wizards are a mix of damage and utility, and can use their skills to either flexibly support a small group while still putting out considerable damage, or to turn the tide of battle with surgical precision."

Bard (caster/ranger)
Echo: Buffs affect allies in an area around the initial receiver(s) with a 50% reduction.
Power Chord: Places a buff on the Bard that temporarily increases its Str, Agi, and Int by (X + Y% of Wis + Y% Agi).
Fresh Beat: Places a buff on the Bard that temporarily increases its Will, Def, and Wis by (X + Y% of Wis + Y% of Agi).
Allegro: Places a buff on the Bard that temporarily increases its movement speed by X%.
Rousing Tune: Places a buff on the Bard and all nearby allies that temporarily increases their stats by X%.
Song of Legend: A large-area buff that takes all active Bard buffs and amplifies them after refreshing their duration.
"Bards carry a variety of skills (that are, effectively, auras) to support larger groups in a number of ways, or contribute to battles in a more direct way."

Marksman (ranger/ranger)
Ranger's Mark: Ranged attacks place a temporary stacking debuff on enemies that increases allied damage towards them.
Take Aim: The Marksman sets up for (X - Y% of Agi) seconds, giving their attacks (A + B% of Agi) bonus range. Take Aim is cancelled upon moving or being hit. Bonus range does not affect the Recurve Bow subclass' **secondary attack.
Cross-Fire: Places a mark on a target. While the mark is active, the target's next attack or offensive skill will be negated. The mark is deactivated upon negating an attack or using an attack/skill.
Disengage: The Marksman jumps a short distance away from a target, shedding all crowd control in the process.
Support Flare: Fires a flare towards a target area. Allies enter stealth while X distance away from the flare or *half-stealth while X additional distance from the flare.
Bladed Rain: High-damage AoE snare; damage is split upon targets.
"Marksmen are masters of ranged combat, with the ability to put out consistently high damage at a distance, or provide powerful cover fire for those on the front lines."

Scout (ranger/warrior)
Swiftrun: Stacking movement speed buff that is dispelled upon taking damage; at max stacks, the user becomes half-stealthed.
Set Trap: The Scout sets a trap that, when sprung, damages all nearby enemies for (X + weapon damage + Y% of Str) over a short period of time. Reveals all units (including stealthed units) in an area around the trap while it is active. Trap enters stealth after (A - B% of Agi - B% of Str) seconds.
Blind: Temporarily blinds all nearby enemies, causing them to miss all attacks and offensive skills for (X + Y% of Agi + Y% of Str) seconds.
Sprint: Momentarily increases movement speed by 100%.
Baton Pass: Passes all active buffs to nearby allies, refreshing their durations (but losing the buffs).
Gather Intel: Copies all buffs (enemy or ally) in an area around the Scout; channeled, AoE increases over the duration of the channel.
"Scouts are highly mobile, and rely on this mobility to skirmish and set up traps on the front line, or to pass along buffs over longer distances."

So yeah I know this is a lot of shit to take in all at once, but I'm kind of excited about all of this and wanted someone else to read it so I could get some input or whatever. Man, explaining a world in MMORPG terms is hella work.

*Also, you can dual-wield shields. Why not?
**Which is a melee attack.
