Is that gray fox you are tanning still for sale?

which one are you referring to? any that have been posted up here are already sold, but i do have one i'm working on that will be for sale (it's complete but not mountable, and has slips on a couple legs and the face)

Was I talking about the one I saw on your trello? would it be acceptable to be a skull fox soft mount?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

flayote In reply to ambercat20 [2017-11-09 00:29:11 +0000 UTC]

ah yeah, the one on my trello is the one i'm talking about! you theoretically COULD skull mount him, however he'd need a lot of work. he's rug cut, and two of his legs are slipped pretty bad (he was a salvage project, not a fresh hide haha). so personally i'd consider him wallhanger/craft only

i wanted to see if you could quote me for skinning and tanning four fancy rats?? :0 just out of curiosity, my friend has lost three and theyve been frozen. they have one more rat whos still alive but im assuming they will freeze her too once she passes so i wanted to get an estimate incase this is the route she wants to take uwu

aw poor babies! rats are $20 each to skin and tan, so it'd be $80 total for all four
(sorry for the late reply! i haven't been on DA much lately x___x)

thank you it's a combination of being thorough with the fleshing (removing all membranes and shaving down thick-skinned areas such as the neck), using a high quality tan+softening oil, and hard work stretching/breaking the leather!

how much would you charge for fleshing and taxiderny prepping and drying a young raccoon? if you do those things and not just tanning
of course!
i can't for the life of me figure out how to turn the ears and i hate fleshing. i'd love for a tan too but i can't afford all that right now

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

flayote In reply to mute-owl [2017-08-17 04:48:09 +0000 UTC]

i could do that not problem! maybe like 10 bucks since it's small? the only issue is, it's way too hot where i'm at to have frozen things shipped, especially a small skin that would thaw quickly. it would have to wait until the weather cools down, but i'm not sure you'd want to hold onto it that long?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mute-owl In reply to flayote [2017-08-17 15:33:44 +0000 UTC]

oh no! theoretically i could but i kinda just wanted to get it done as fast as possible but i'm just worried the ears will slip or something because i'm a boob and don't know how to do anything but throw salt on a skin. Β he's been salted a little bit but he's still mostly still floppy. Β it's got super humid again too so i'm worried it's not drying fast enough.
if i did ship to you later on maybe i could consider a tan too? Β i was planning to use the tanner i've been using since your queue was too busy to take any more commissions but your tans always look so good. Β how much would you add for a tan after finishing up turning and fleshing?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

flayote In reply to mute-owl [2017-08-19 00:31:47 +0000 UTC]

if you've got a fan you can put him under, it will help ton with drying him out quickly. i have turned ears/split lips/etc that were first dried without being turned and they didn't slip, so while there's no guarantee, it is certainly possible they could hold up just fine!Β
raccoons are normally $50, but he's a smaller adolescent right? so i could go down to $40 on him. i'm pretty close to finishing up the remaining pelts on my queue, if you'd like i could shoot you a message once i'm ready to take on some more stuff (probably would be around october) and see if you have anything you'd want to send me?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mute-owl In reply to flayote [2017-08-19 00:35:21 +0000 UTC]

Being notified would be great! I unfortunately don't have anywhere to leave him in the open though, my cat drags salty pelts all over the place and I have no rooms to close doors that would be conviniant for a salty mess like that. I clipped some silica gel packets to his ears with salt to help, hopefully. I might have him tanned by then since I don't tend to like waiting for tanning. I seem to have regular raw pelts coming in from random roadkill salvage or some listings on facebook so I could potentially have something by then.

flayote In reply to mute-owl [2017-05-25 04:40:06 +0000 UTC]

gah i wish i could tan your squirrel ;___; it feels like i've been closed forever, i hate having to keep saying no to people. i'm definitely not taking on so many pelts at once again! i've learned my lesson there haha.Β
i should be done with everything left on my queue+ready to open again around october, so hopefully by then you'll have something to send me!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mute-owl In reply to flayote [2017-05-25 05:05:22 +0000 UTC]

i have some plans for raw stuff since it's cheaper overall it seems like! luckily i do know somone who can tan him for me in the mean time. some guy in facebook, he did my goat kid in like.. record time for a tan it felt like. it was back before i even knew it and it mounted up great. you do such nice soft tans though, almost garment quality tbh, so soft and white!

i just recently got a pretty small squirrell [very young, definitely male but his testicles were totally not apparent at all and his body was really only about 8 or so inches nose to butt] and he's finally about done salting. Β are you still too bogged to take more tanning commissions? Β i don't know if this tail will hold up, my luck with squirrel tails drying right has a track record of failure every time.. xD Β but i wanted to see if you were up to tanning the little guy!!

flay, i meant to ask! if i put whitney, the coyote you tanned, into the washer in an effort to get rid of her dog smell that still refuses to leave, will the tan dry soft or would i have to break it again?

dog smell isn't worth having to break her leather again, but i know plenty of tans dry soft after getting wet, i just dont know how the tan you use works!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

flayote In reply to mute-owl [2016-09-22 06:24:35 +0000 UTC]

you wouldn't need to do any vigorous breaking to get her soft again, but you would have to stretch the leather periodically as she dries if you got her wet! all tans are that way, even the softest leather will dry a bit stiff if it's not worked a little as it dries Β

also be aware that because of how much she slipped, she might slip more if she gets wet (which is why i didn't try washing her a second time myself). so i wouldn't suggest soaking her if you can help it. have you tried all the dry methods of deodorizing (tumbling with dryer sheets, airing outside, etc)?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mute-owl In reply to flayote [2016-09-22 15:09:55 +0000 UTC]

duly noted!! Β i have tried lots of methods, though i will admit i didn't tumble her fer very long ebcause I couldn't find a thin material to put her in so her claws wouldn't clink and scratch everything ;;
but i also tried pine shavings, airing her out, rubbing her with dryer sheets, and i misted her slightly with a fragrance of mine but all of this maybe reduced the smell by a half or a third i'd guess. Β i can't believe how smelly coyotes are ;_;
i am scared about rehydration for the slipping, but i think half the reason she slipped it just ebcause i didn't salt her right [her head was folded over onto itself because i've read people salt things and roll them up but clearly that's a buncha hokey, and i realized i basically forgot to salt her ears entirely, day after salt had been on her. Β i think slippage on the shoulder could have been from the impact of the vehicle that hit her, so all the parts I dried properly should be able to hold their fur, but the concern is still there. Β  Just wanted to make sure your tans were washable at least! Β I might invest in the stuff specifically for trappers to make their pelts not stanky, whatever that liquid was called... Β I'm sure I could find it on Ellie's facebook group, I've seen it mentioned a lot there.

flayote In reply to mute-owl [2016-09-24 01:40:49 +0000 UTC]

ah man, i'm sorry it's giving you so much trouble! she's a stubborn yote for sure, i never had one that smelled as strongly as she does!Β
maybe a nice smelling dry shampoo would work? or maybe you could try the tumbling again if you put a couple socks on her feet?Β
but yeah if it came down to it, the leather should hold up just fine if rehydrated, it's just the slipping that would be a potential issue

Are you still interested in the red coyote you worked on? If you find a red fox pup thats tanned (doesnt need to be mountable, but complete) i might consider trading if you like Figured Id ask cuz i seen a whole one for sale and I was tempted to buy it but I dont have the funds to buy and then tan it myself, especially with work going on. Thanks c:

will do! would you be open to selling her as well? if so, i'd be willing to tan a fox pup if you got one (or anything really) for no charge, as sort of a partial trade?

I could definately do! I dont know if ill find another pup soon though, but im open to partials If i dont find something I might just keep her for a while since i do like her, but if you stumble across anything I like more ill jump on that offer c: Hit me up anytime!

ANOTHER slightly more morbid question

so over the course of the last year i've been considering getting my cats' pelts preserved and the rest of their bodies crenated when the time comes. i know i wouldn't be able to skin them because i'd probably be anxious and maybe crying if i tried, so i wonder if you'd be comfortable taking a frozen whole cat, skinning for taxidermy (i just want the skin as in tact os possible) and instead of shipping me back the frozen, naked body, i would also pay for cremation, then when the pelt is done you ship the ashes and pelt back? that maybe would be a lot to ask and hopefully i have at least another ten years with my eldest cat, but she's 12 now so i feel like i have to start planning just in case..

if you're not at all down, i totally get it because it's a lot of work and a lot of pressure but i have good faith in you from whatever limited experience i've had so i thought i'd ask. my youngest cat is just a wee one year old so i doubt dA will even be a thing in the hopefully 20+ years he has with me, but the question still stands. c:

flayote In reply to mute-owl [2016-05-05 04:55:12 +0000 UTC]

i would be honored to preserve your cat for you! i want to preserve my own pets when they eventually pass, so i know how important it is be able to have that done and i'm happy to do it for others. i've skinned+tanned cats before, so i definitely feel confident working with them and hopefully she's got a lot of time left with you, so i'll have even more experience by then!Β

mute-owl [2016-04-29 03:43:22 +0000 UTC]

oh oh i have another question for you. Β are you capable of skinning chickens? Β there's someone selling a frozen whole golden chicken on here and i really wanted it, but i don't think i can skin a chicken, and i'd hate to mess her up.. Β plus, not even tanning is necessary, just the whole salt and borax thing. Β if you don't do that, it's fine, i probably can't pay for it anyways after you tan my other two things provided they work out, but i wanted to know for future thingies!
