Yeah I started doing a daily sketch, then got tired (my brain ached after several hours of work and study) so I havent done anything in a while. A few half-finished WIPs though.

When I'm too tired to draw anything that I have to think about, I just make abstract doodles. They're kind of relaxing to do since there's no right or wrong with them, just whatever I feel like in the moment. I haven't done any for a while now, now that I stop to think about it. The last one I started turned into scenery.

Nothing wrong with just having a couple WIP pictures you work on over time, though. Gives you time to walk away and look at other stuff and think about other stuff so you come back with a fresh perspective. >.> Which is probably something I should do more often with my art. I just immediately post it as soon as I finish it instead of giving myself a couple days to walk away and then come back and fix mistakes and all that.

What program do you use, by the way?

I'm stuck using MS Paint - I find that some formats I save it under (and I'm not sure which until its too late) screw up the pixels and stuff so the colour gets buggered

I use ArtRage, the program that came with my tablet. It's a program specifically for use with a tablet, though. Before I got my mine, I really liked GIMP. Nice, free alternative to photoshop. If you want to give making art with vectors a try, you could use Inkscape. That one's also free.

Ooh, you're likely saving in JPEG format. Can make a perfectly great picture look like ugly, pixelated crap. I did a bit of reading up on the subject, though, and apparently it's closing, editing, and then saving an already existing JPEG that really messes it up. But I just use PNG to avoid the whole problem. GIF's not bad, either.

GIMP lol. *cough* My beef is that, being a simpleton, I wouldnt know how to work the programs.. I tried Paintshop or whatever it was called once... Bloody hell.

lol Yeah, I don't know who named that program but the name always makes me giggle.

Well, GIMP does have online tutorials and things like that on its page, so you don't have to figure it out all on your own. But I know how it is trying to learn a new program. Hell, there's still tons I don't know about ArtRage and I use that all the time.

But the biggest reason I like GIMP, and pretty much any other program, more than MSPaint is layers. I mean, you don't need layers to make great art, but it sure makes things easier.

Well, layers are... Kind of like having multiple sheets of magically clear paper when you're drawing. You can see through the ones on top, except where there's swatches of color and the like since those cover up whatever's in the same space on lower layers. You can also hide layers, so if you want to shut one off while you're working on something under it, you can do that, too. Or you can even just turn down the opacity of a layer higher up in the stack, that way you can still sort of see what's there without it getting totally in the way of seeing what's underneath.

I use them a lot with coloring and shading. The lowest layer is usually for a solid background color, or for a color for the mood or whatever. Then above that will be the flat colors for everything. Above that will be the layer for line art. Above that will be the layers for shading. And finally, above that will be the layers for lighting.

Even when you're not coloring, you can still do a sketch on one layer, then the final line art above it. I'll also sometimes use a layer for working out how I want just one specific bit to look, that way I can erase and redraw without messing up my final lines or the sketch. It's super convenient.

I think layers one of those things you get the hang of pretty quickly when you start using them. Experience is the best teacher and all that. If you ever decide to give it a try and need help on anything at all, though, I'll be here.
