Thanks! I still get compliments on the rifle design every so often, although I also use it largely because it's so small I can throw it in a duffel bag.

Yep, the size was one of the major points when i built my version. To that time i already had the three First Contact Rifles which each have 1 meter in length. Also my Mass Effect rifles which even have a length of 1,20 meters. They look good, but for convention its hard to travel with them. So i made this Star Trek 6 Rifle in the same size as the P90 i built a while before for a Stargate project. So much easier to handle.

For good reason. I am way too busy now. I finished my second master's degree and have a full-time job as a certified medical laboratory scientist. A career path where I deal with life and death on a day-to-day basis doesn't allow me much time for anything else.

Yeah. Master of Science in Biology, Master of Health Science in Clinical Laboratory Science, certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (American Society for Clinical Pathology). And of course it was a lot of work, I was a starving college student for 8 years. Anyway, one of the things I no longer really have much time for is chatting on this page. I don't even check it very much nowadays. I'm not sure when I'll be able to post anything new. But thanks anyway.

We'll see. To be honest, the only reason I have a DA is because I needed to make sure I recorded my ideas somewhere, lest I forget about them, because the only other place they're stored is in my head. My DA is a memory dump, and a place to record cosplay progress on behalf of my friends, nothing more.

Hey dude, I just wanna ask from one Trekkie to another, if YOU were in JJ Abrams place how would you have handled rebooting the Star Trek franchise?

galaxy1701d In reply to Hellsender [2014-08-23 16:31:16 +0000 UTC]
My God. I *hate* being asked this question, especially since I often get asked this by the Abrams-haters that I have to keep kicking off my page. That question is like a trap. On the whole, I don't mind how Abrams did it. I would have just changed a handful of minor things, mostly aesthetics:
1. No barrel-flipping Phasers. They look ridiculous, they were basically designed so the idiots in the audience could clearly tell "stun" from "kill," and they're not realistic at all, and I know from concept art that there were alternative designs they had that didn't barrel-flip.
2. No silly repeating delta shield pattern going down the uniforms. I know they make the uniforms harder to make unlicensed copies of, and they give the outfits texture under bright light, but they're stupid, and they are not very "military." They make the uniform look like a baseball jersey.
3. No Spock/Uhura romance. I don't think it was necessary, I feel like they did it just to throw some romance in there, and justified it because Spock and Uhura have a single flirty-looking scene in the original, and it just doesn't feel comfortable. I can accept it, now that they did it, but I wouldn't have done it.
4. Keep the Enterprise at her original design size of 366 meters (which is already bigger than the TOS ship, which was 289 meters). The only reason she got blown up to 725.35 meters in the movie is because the shuttles are much bigger and the "epic shuttle scene" from ST:09 required her to jam like 16 of them in her rear, and a 366 meter ship couldn't fit that many.
So as you can see, with the exception of Spock/Uhura (which I just did not see the need for), I have been quite happy with how J.J. and the team rebooted the franchise and I generally agree with the decisions they made, as it keeps the spirit of TOS - all the way down to the slapstick moments and the show not taking itself *too* seriously - alive, but also understands that in order to please the general audience (not just us smart people), it ultimately has to sneak in the moral plot lines between a lot of action, visual spectacle and big-name characters.
That's just how Hollywood works, so you take it or leave it, and so far, this has been much better than many Hollywood reboots I've seen - take the American "Godzilla" from a while back or Michael Bay's horrible "Ninja Turtles" movie, for example.
And yes, I know, it doesn't make much sense promoting a cadet straight to captain, but I accepted it because it was the only way to get everybody together in the space of one movie. So like I said, I wouldn't change anything major about how Abrams did it because I like what he did. I just don't agree with how certain things look, and how the Enterprise is now the size of a small Star Destroyer for no real reason. That's all.

Hi! How are you doing? I'm doing fine. I just will let you know that I really enjoyed viewing all your designs for the phaser weapons from the Star Trek series. I would like to ask you this question. Do you play Star Trek online? If you do, that would be great. And I think you should submit your pistol phaser design to either Cryptic or Perfect World Entertainment. They would be so cool in the game!

No. I don't play any of that stuff. I work in health care, which means I don't have time for things like that.
