# About me

My life started with music: I started playing violin at the age of three, learned saxophone and clarinet as well, and went to the University of Iowa as a viola performance major. I attended Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute, and performed with artists Seiji Ozawa, Yo-Yo Ma, and Bobby McFerrin. I moved from classical music to playing bass and keyboards with touring progressive and industrial rock bands. I’ve spent the majority of my life focusing on music, which is why it never occurred to me to become a photographer. At least, not until someone told me it had already happened.

As I toured the country with various groups and bands, I documented our travels with photographs. Every new city, each night and venue, I captured the storm, and the calm before it. When I traveled for vacation, I shot image after image of landscapes and animals, locals and fellow travelers. I loved what I did, loved the magic of discovery and creation, loved being in the right place at just the right moment.

When I shared a selection of these images, culled from over a decade of work, with an artist friend, she insisted they needed to be seen by others, and put together a small show for us to share. She, Julia Comer, a jewelry artist, then invited me to collaborate with her on a project for the Kentucky Museum of Arts and Crafts (KMAC). This was my first time working with models. And it was incredible.

For the SKIN project, which required only five or six photographs, I shot well over five hundred. Together we were challenging and exploding the concepts of gender, beauty, and sexuality with regards to physical ornamentation, and when we were finished the models and I couldn’t believe it was already over. The experience was so positive and empowering for everyone involved, I moved immediately to my first singular collection: VIRAGO.

In current usage, a “virago” is an opinionated, aggressive, loud-voiced, ill-tempered, shrewish woman. The original meaning of the word, though, was a woman of strength or spirit, a powerful woman; a warrior woman. VIRAGO is a collection of strong women, powerful women, a celebration of warriors wearing their armor, whatever it might be.

The material goal of VIRAGO is to produce a collected limited edition art album and accompanying gallery collection, the proceeds of which will go to benefit LGBT in the Louisville, Kentucky area.

I absolutely love the etchings you do. What method and process do you use? I'm about to paint on aluminum for the first time and would love some pointers on adding texture and such :}

I was thinking about my usual type of subject matter, which I usually do as bright and colorful, so I really took that shot on a whim. I adjusted it a little bit, but otherwise it remained the same. I appreciate that you like it!
