Hiya! I wonder if the movie you refer to as your favorite is the same as what Peter Beagle wrote?

Thank you so much for the watch (and the encouraging words)! You have some great stuff! I love your piece "Mezmer", its gorgeous!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
graywhisper In reply to Dusty73085 [2009-05-16 12:19:05 +0000 UTC]
thank you. That is one of my favorites because it has personal significance. Mezmers are a species from the world of Midia, the world "Quietus" (my new book) takes place on.
The Mezmer image made the cover of the PentaCon XXIII Preregistration book. So it's the most widely recognized too.

yeah. I kept like a thousand copies of the book. *laughs* I sold prints at the con, too, and it was the year I debued with artprints, t-shirts and various other items with my pieces. It was an exciting year.

I love the sketching! What do you base your work from? I see alot of Micheal Mobius in your art.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
graywhisper In reply to aprilheels [2009-04-30 06:44:36 +0000 UTC]
I don't know who that is, but I'll look him up. quite a few of my pieces are commission... so I base them on other's ideas. The most recent boy with the shadows is the cover to my new book Quietus (coming out in october), and the phoenix is for EMG-zine, and the Mezmer one is a chick from the same world as Quietus, Midia.
So... lots of different places.
Thank you so much!

aprilheels In reply to graywhisper [2009-04-30 06:49:34 +0000 UTC]
You're quite welcome! Mobius does life-like erotic drawings of the female form. He was previously an engineer. Even my wife finds them provocative. If you want, I[ll get the ISBN # from our favorite book?
I do have a question...how did you make your break in print journalism? In other words, what was your sales pitch to the publishers?

In fact, I am evolving my GrayWhisper Graphics company to include publication (GWGP GrayWhisper Graphics Productions) in order to distribute my book to retailers. It's hard work, but I'm going full-board!

I just looked up some of his work, and they are quite lovely. I am flattered that you would compare some of my armature-ish work with his masterpieces.
as for my break: self publishing thought CreateSpace.com which is owned by amazon.com. My hope is that my book sells enough copies to give me credibility with large publishers on my next book "The Fallen Shadow"

aprilheels In reply to graywhisper [2009-04-30 07:01:27 +0000 UTC]
It is not amateurish at all! It's alot better than I can do as far as sketching or illustrating! I can only write and take pictures of what something else has created. I've always tried sketching, however, it never turns out as well as the other venues.
Besides, a masterpiece is all in one's perception. Correct? Even my wife says I am too hard on myself even when it comes to writing. Maybe the women are right?
But do not sell yourself short at all on your work!
It is fantastic!

Have you ever tried Publish America .com? I have a friend that is writing a book through them. What's your take?

graywhisper In reply to aprilheels [2009-04-30 07:15:58 +0000 UTC]
I do not trust their site. I read through some of their information and on first glance they don't seem to be on the up and up. Plus they dodged the question about bookstore distribution and royalties. They don't really offer any useful or informed information which makes me suspicious. Let me know if your friend has luck with them.
I would also direct your attention to this review which got much the same impression as me: [link]

graywhisper In reply to aprilheels [2009-04-30 07:29:26 +0000 UTC]
other warning reviews: [link] [link] [link] from everything I'm reading, I would warn your friend away. My first impression of their site wasn't a good one, and several reviews I've read about them says they are a vanity publisher who offsets not charging upfront by overcharging on author copies and never makes any effort to put the books into stores.
your photography: I find several of your images very compelling. You seem to have a fondness for unfocused effects, but this can make you seem inexperienced if they're in excess. You've picked a lot of very difficult subjects (theater lighting, moving targets, etc...), so it's hard to tell if the effects achieved are deliberate or not. [link] is my favorite out of your gallery because of my bazaar attraction to high-contrast images.
Even if I'm not fond of the overall composition, I understand what you were going for in most of them. Keep it up.

I will promote that site to it's death then! LOL!
And thank you for your critique...and yes, those effects were deliberate. I try to go for a photojournalism view point, or at least keep my pictures as natural as possible in whatever situation may pose.
I'm glad you like the evening cloud photo as well! That was the only one I deepened the colors to, as the background clouds weren't just a shade darker.
So, now I ask in your opinion, what would you like to see from me as a photographer, photojournalist?
I really appreciate your critique, and obviously want you to nit-pick just a bit more!
So when you get the chance.....

I would like to see you experiment a little more with the 'thirds' rule. Your subjects are interesting, but they are lost on the canvas of a 'typical' shot. [link] [link] <
When photographing a closer object, be aware of the tolerance and focal length of your camera. I liked some of the shoe photos, but only a few straps were in focus, and the rest blurred. I thought it may have been intentional, but I wasn't sure.
Also: black and white is a very seductive medium because it has the potential to make even the most mundane seem old or exotic. Color, though, is a far more complex prospect. It's a challenge that I think you should work into. Play with it.

I really want to thank you for the tips! Keep in mind, we do have a teenage daughter, so alot of the shots are put together on the cuff and we get what we get.LOL!
Seriously, though, I just bought the new camera, so I don't have all the aperture settings and F-stops down yet.
You're right in what you said about my pics, and please don't be bashful.

I really want to warn you with all seriousness about the 'ublication' company you recommended earlier. They are a nightmare and will tie up your friend's publication rights. Please try to encourage them to publish through a more reputable source. I recommend (though months of research) Amazon.com's [link] it IS a pod, but they can order copes of their books for as little as 5-6 dollars and the books are available on amazon.com and on their personal website. Shipping is reasonable and they're upfront about what they have to offer.
The company you mentioned before (from everything I've read) is a nasty scam that preys on the dreams of writers to turn a cheap profit off of them. Please encourage your friend to look into his/her other options.
