I almost want to say that sounds recent--3 years--but no matter how long a Loved One has been absent from your Life I'm sure that's something you'll never completely get over. My condolences either way.
WHAT!!!?!?!?!??? So NOW it makes sense as to why that Photo of you 2 isn't on the front of your Profile. Damn that must be heartbreaking, but if you 2 can remain Friends through all this in the aftermath then I'm sure there's nothing to fear.
