Heh, I saw a comment you wrote about the frontpage... It really sucks. all They post is long rambling drivel, depressy wessy shit about not getting the purse they wanted or FUCK ALL..... I dont understand the mindset of those that put that stuff up.. its always Writer indulgent and completly clumsy and predictable. So im with you in agression. The front page does not depict all the great work Ive seen at DevArt. Im headed to your gally.

Kierkegaard says, β€œThat is, only I know the truth when it becomes a life in me. (53)” Can we argue then that truth can be birth and that at birth the parents are struck suddenly with the truth as though in laid latent in their minds since they were born?
Is the truth locked away until one contributes to the process of life, and is truth the great reward god gives for contributing to the cycle of life that he created? Soren also says, β€œ... to merely β€˜know’ the truth is insufficientβ€”it is an untruth. (53)” This is much like saying one can know the truth is there (or at least know it’s inherent in lifeβ€”that it does in fact exist), but in order for the lock to be opened, one must help god’s β€œexperiment” along. This is birth. Perhaps this why there is so much at stake for a parent at birth and child rearing. Why the copulaters, as in many stories we have read, have sacrificed everything for their child.

Although Kierkegaard’s whole point to β€œProvocations” and many other books he wrote was to explain what, exactly a β€œreal” Christian is (if such a thing does exists), he bears a fundamental answer in shape of a How- To model for those who cannot figure it out on their own. In this own way Kierkegaard contradicts himself (even though he admits not even he follows his own moral guidelines to the tee) because he forms a construct of religious thinking, even though he argues that every man walks along his own road.
In fact, the point he seems to be driving at is that every man’s road to salvation is the same, β€œbut... how one ought to walk along the road (56-57)” decides a man’s fate. Generally, the implication of the β€œroad” is Christianity.
In contrast, I believe that organized religion as a whole has been detrimental to society, and where Kierkegaard argues β€œwhen he gets together in a crowd, untruth will be present at once, for the crowd is untruth (23).” Is organized religion not a crowd? Are great concepts stemming from the bible massacred by the ignorance of the masses? Soren argues that becoming part of a large crowd is the greatest danger, and that only as an individual can one find the truth.
So, is he not denouncing his own faith?

I've decided that the only reason why writers say you must write for yourself and artists say you must create art for yourself is just another pretentious way of being able to hold an "abstract concept" over other peoples heads.
Because obviously all the people who don't write for themselves are sellout exploiters of the human language.
I scoff.

TheBunk In reply to iheartralphnad [2004-11-11 14:38:07 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, I think there's a truth in the importance of writing for yourself. Just because someone is commercially successful doesn't make them a sellout, nor does it mean they're not writing for themselves. I think that writing for yourself simply means that you write what you want, exactly how you want to, without worrying about how other people will interpret your work.

If you have a vision, it deserves to be pursued to the fullest. You shouldn't worry about someone getting offended by it, not understanding it, or even being interested in it. If other people like it, fine, but ultimately you should be pleased with what you wrote.

Just my $.02

Welcome to DA!

Mostly what I wrote was sarcasm. Ie the line "Because obviously all the people who don't write for themselves are sellout exploiters of the human language." I was just stating that people tend to like to use the line "I write for myself" as a way to make people think their writing is more genuine. When in reality, who you write for doesn't matter to the reader, so long as the ideas are well-articulated.

Thanks for the response,

Ally

Ah, I getcha. Yeah, I'm sure you see a bit of that kind of attitude around here. Great point about the reader's perspective. They don't ultimately care what you were thinking when you wrote it- they either like it or don't.

Good luck- I'll keep my grapes peeled for your works!

I reread the comment I wrote you, and though this isn't an excuse, I don't remember writing it and judging by the grammar errors I think I was drunk.

So sorry as coming off as a bitch, I really didn't mean it.
