Hi, my name is Michael Falcone and Iβm doing a documentary on the Fremont Troll sculpture in Seattle (2nd only to the Space Needle in terms of most favorite Seattle icon). Part of the documentary involves the designers researching what trolls might look like, and while doing an online image search I can across your sketch- which I think is stunning. Would it be possible to use in the documentary? Youβd be credited, of course, for use of the image, but Iβm on a tight budget so unfortunately I canβt pay you.
Please let me know. Nice work. A link to the trailer is below.

Hey Kingacer!
I have long been in awe of your drawings: it even inspired me to do my own race and website ([link])
Anyways, i was wondering: how do you draw your creatures etc.? Are they scanned in, or are they done on illustrator with live trace? I have illustartor cs3 i think, but i don't know how to make my creatures look good, like yours!
Any helpful explanations/tips will be extremely helpful!

Hi Masonatronic!
It feels great to hear that you like my artwork and that it has inspired you to make a website. Your link doesn't work though, I can't click on it. I'd really like to see it though, could you try again?
About my drawings. I usually draw my creatures with pencil. I mostly use mechanical pencils with 2H, HB and 2B leads. Sometimes I use a tortillon to blend the shading.
When colouring a drawing, I use Gimp, wich is similar to photoshop (and to illustrator cs3, I think), but can be downloaded for free.
To draw and colour on the computer, I use a pen tablet from wacom. Those things are really usefull, since it feels more naturally than drawing with a mouse, and you can apply pressure with it.
I advise you to look at as much artwork that you admire, and try to find out how they did it. Look at lots of tutorials, and buy books that can teach you how to draw better. Learning a bit of animal anatomy (skeletons and muscles), is really usefull too. And the most important thing is to practice alot ofcourse.
Let me know if any of this helps you.
And don't forget that link, I'm really curious

Cool!
I never knew you had to use that much equipment and preparation to complete artwork on the computer successfully, but i guess once your set, the race is forever!
I appreciate your curiosity for my site! Thanks! [link]
Tell me again if it doesn't work!
Thanks!

Wow, you really put a lot of thought into this species. A very good job!
The idea of many tiny creatures forming one individual sounds really interesting.
I noticed you haven't uploaded any drawings yet though.
I can't wait to see how you will portray them. So let me know when you have oke?

I have got my first picture on there now, of the Uraelui's head on there now.
That is what they turn out like, the pictures i mean . You can see it (if you really want to) at the first page, and on the beginning of the anatomy section. It is black and white at the moment, as i haven't coloured it yet. [link]
Thanks for your compliments; I really appreciate it. A lot of my imagination cycles were spent on that project, and more are to be spent I'm sure!
P.S. I can't colour my pictures! They always turn out looking really rubbish, with just solid colours. Do you know how to make it so parts look shiny, or give them different textures?

I like the design of the head, really cool!
Did you draw it on the computer? If so, I suggest using a softbrush for the shadows, and a blending tool to blend the colours together, since your using a mouse. I don't know alot about illustrator cs3 though.
I think the best way to learn how to shade and make certain textures, is by drawing with pencil.
Once you are good at drawing with pencil, it will be easier to work on digital painting.
And I advise you to buy a pen tablet. They will make digital painting alot easier, once you get used to it.
I'd try to find a small and cheap one. I personally use a wacom bamboo.

Thanks!
I drew it using live trace, before going over it with some pencil work to clear up some bits that went a bit funny. I have never even heard of the softbrush or the blending tool; what are they and what purpose do they serve?
A pen tablet? I'll probably have to ask my dad before buying anything, but he does digital artwork too, so he'll be all in i think. Is the 'wacom bamboo' good? What does it contain etc.
Thanks for all the advice!

Well I'm not sure of illustrator, but photoshop and gimp have softbrushes and a blending tool.
A softbrush is just a brush with soft edges, wich makes the colours look smoother.
A blending tool is used to blend colours together. You can compare it to a tortillon.
Try searching 'wacom tablet' in google, I think you'll get all the info you need.
Just remember that it's not necessary to buy a large pen tablet, a small one works fine too.

Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it.
By the way, i have uploaded some new information onto Deviant art, similar to the stuff on my website. I have changed the species a bit though, and would appreciate comments on how to improve my writing further. Do you draw creatures? I swear i saw the Oohm on the 'Gaming steve' forum...
It seems i'm going to concentrate on writing at the moment, and then draw digital work pieces relevant to the text. Also, tell me if you do design your own creatures. I'm very interested!!!

I read some of your new stuff. Sounds like a really interesting creature!
I don't really have a lot of experience with writing though. So I'm afraid I can't give you much advice on that.
I do want to start writing more though, so my next creations will probably contain more text.
About the Oohm. Yeah It's very possible that you saw it at gamingsteve's, cause I actually created that creature for the spore forums on there
Also, most of my creatures come straight from my imagination. Some stuff is for projects or for requests I got from friends.
I don't work in the art industry.

Masonatronic In reply to kingacer [2009-09-02 09:50:32 +0000 UTC]
You should work in the art industry, like be a concept designer for game's and stuff. You're good enough.
Thanks! I killed quite a lot of time creating my creature, so i'll upload a picture soon...well, soon actually means qute a long time, but i'll try.
You should definitely start writing some more. It would make your creatures like the Oohm have a much more realistic touch if readers could understand where they live, why they have that, why they do that. yada yada yada. If you would like, i would happily help.
Most of my creatures are created from my imagination, and then i add things i like about creatures to them. I find that works well, and often is quite a fun experience.
I look forward to seeing more of your work.
See ya' around
