I've been thinking about what it is to offer a critique, because that's what you want to improve your art. Someone 'critiqued' Picasso once by saying 'that doesn't look like a violin' and he answered 'madam that is not a violin, that is a picture of a violin.' Another time somebody asked him why he's put something into a painting and he answered 'becauseI wanted to.' Dali criticised Picasso by saying 'he has such talent, it's too bad he never painted a masterpiece.'
I claim I'm self taught, and never took a formal class, but I wasn't above asking someone if I could watch them paint, or asking them 'I'd like to see how you render eyes.' So what I think is if you see an area where you want to improve and see that someone else seems to be doing it better than you or in a way you want to do it, ask them and hope for a reasonable answer. I only work in oils, but if you have any questions I'll be happy to try to answer them.
Having said that, I don't know a lot about art, but I know what I like. And a lot of times, that's what it boils down to.

Sorry I didn't respond for forever, I've been on vacation for this last week and a half and I've had no access to a computer. I'm the same way as you are about art. I took a few classes in highschool, but they didn't teach me to paint, and I never even realized that I had any minor talent at all until I did it on my own. I think watching helps, but ultimately the only way to learn is by just doing it yourself. I'm not really sure how other people paint, or what the "correct way to do it" is, I just sort of dive right in. I have a lot of things I need to improve on though, I find it actually depressing sometimes to look at other peoples art and realize how far behind I am. Its funny that you only work in oils, because I actually only work in acrylics. If I was rich I'd switch to oils, but for now my whole collection of paint is acrylics so I just stick with that.
By the way--I love that you're obsessed with your cat. I'm obsessed with my dog--i'm almost done with a painting of her that I will be posting on here soon.

Ah, you noticed my obsession? Old Uncle Mikey once said to me, 'when you die your cat's life will flash by you.'
I think oils have more covering power, so in the end they may not be much more expensive. Harder to care for the brushes though.
And don't think you're behind. You're where you're at. I know what you mean, because when I stare at an original Dali or Rembrandt I feel...inferior. Still, the only one I compete with is myself. And anything you do a lot of you get better at.

I'm not a cat person, mainly because my cat is a stuck up snob who doesn't associate with me. Perhaps yours is different. I don't mean that oils are extremely expensive, only that it would cost a lot to buy a complete set of oils, considering I probably couldn't last on only a few colors. Perhaps I will though, if I ever get enough money saved up from Michaels. I go back and forth about my own work. Sometimes I'll get into a period where I just paint and paint, and generally I work on something until I have to like it--otherwise I throw it out--but then I look at different abstract works and I feel like suddenly I haven't been painting the right things. I thing I do too many stills--i need to break out of the box.

I wasn't a cat person. I used to own siberian huskies. My cat associates with me, but pretty much when he feels like it. And I can't say I'm a cat person so much as I say I'm a my cat person.
The trash can is being filled with some of my old paintings even as we speak. Generally, I've always known what I want to paint, it's just a question of if I can.

pssh if you don't want your old paintings send them to me. i'm sure they are above being thrown away. i have a hard time throwing things away even paintings i hate, because i always feel like maybe eventually i'll go back and work on it more.

Some have gotten mold in them from sitting inthe garage, and mildew. It'll gobble right into fresh paint. You can end up spraying the a couple of times a month with clorox to try to kill it, but it's a long and irritating process. A good lot of them are portraits of women that don't mean anything to me anymore unless I think they were well executed. I'd ship some up to you, but they should be mailed to a friend. I don't want to get pegged as a stalker. The only stipulation I'd have is that you work on them and turn them into soomething that's yours.

I'm new myself, although I'd been putting it off for some time. It's worse for writers, often, because even if people say oh so and so is a writer!, few are going to read if you write at any length. Painters can at least get an immediate reaction to something substantial, even if just a photograph of a work. Even within art communities you can be ignored if you flout local aesthetics or politics. The best thing about DA, I think, is you are able to throw your work out to the whole world. KInd of intimidating, if I think about it.

it's true that painters get the immediate reaction but often times stories or poems are the things that stick with you longer. i adore painting and am a terrible writer, but overall i feel more influenced by the works i've read than the paintings ive seen. DA does indeed seem to be a helpful tool for getting your stuff out there. i'll be sure and try to read some of your writings, btw

Probably the ideal situation is if you could illustrate your own writings. I'm not much good at drawing, and painting is more like sculpture to me, cutting in and shaping till I get close to what I want.
