Alright, I'm back! A belated happy new year to you too

Turns out my fear of my luggage being too heavy was completely unfounded, since I didn't even come close to the weight limit. Also, there were no strikes, so there was no reason to worry about that, either... However, one thing we didn't take into account was the weather - While during the whole Christmas time it was pretty warm, that changed on the day we were scheduled to leave, and due to heavy snowfall in Frankfurt (where we had a stopover), our flight was simply cancelled After some waiting in line, we got assigned a new flight for the following day, directly from Vienna to Stockholm, as well as a free taxi to Vienna. A nice side effect of this was that we could join my flatmate's birthday party that evening Also, since the new flight was way faster, we didn't arrive totally late like initially planned, but rather in the evening, which made everything way less stressful So that worked out pretty well for us, I would say
The following days were filled with lots of museums, great Swedish cuisine, and surprisingly warm temperatures, since while Central Europe was in the grip of a strong cold spell with lots of snow, the North was met with warm climate When we arrived there still was some snow, but in the following days it all melted, and while it wasn't really warm due to the strong wind, it was still way less cold than expected (and also less cold than at home, which is pretty ironic ). The Nachteil of this was that we couldn't go cross-country skiing like we had planned, but instead we did go hiking a bit, as well as ice skating on a frozen lake Also, visiting a sauna and cooling off in an ice hole in the lake was pretty great
The flight home was luckily uneventful, and all in all, it was a pretty great vacation

For my reddit secret santa gift, I just ended up packing some of my favourite unknown movies on a flash drive. I know that seems a bit cheap, but I just didn't find a suitable dvd :/ Now combined with my breaking bad artwork, some Austrian sweets and some movie pitches, this made up my present, and I really hope my giftee liked it... Haven't heard from him since, so I'm a bit worried :/
And yes, I also recieved a gift, just fetched it from the post office yesterday It's from Ireland, and consists of a box of chocolates, some tasty jellies, a book from Terry Pratchett's Diskworld series (which is funny since I just finished my first Pratchett book ), and a comic sketchbook/reference guide, which looks really useful Pretty great present! I'll definitely take part in next year's exchange, too!

Yes, Interstallar had its flaws (though I'm not sure what the many major plot holes were for you - There were a few, sure, but it wasn't that bad ), but it was still one of the most enjoyable movies I watched lately. And thanks for pointing out the dust bowl thing, I didn't catch that at all! Really interesting
Also, the score is just amazing Something that really stands out in the rather bland world of modern soundtracks.

Welcome back I'm glad you enjoyed your vacation-- it sounds like you had a great time! Even if it wasn't nearly as cold as you hoped it would be So were the Swedish people nice? And did you like their language?

Wow, those sound like some rather involved gifts! But awesome gifts, though. I guess I'm in all the wrong secret santas. We're doing a secret santa at work on Friday (well, technically we're doing it at a party after work, but anyway) and we've all made it clear that we're foisting our unwanted Christmas gifts on each other. It'll be great.

Oh, just the many plot holes including why Anne Hathaway's character was randomly in love with this other scientist (Edmunds?) with no backstory, no investigation into the post-apocalyptic world in which they live, other than "oh, the moon landings were faked to bankrupt the Soviet Union", how Cooper managed to survive falling into a black hole with only a space suit, why that physics professor guy "betrayed everyone" (I never trusted physics professors, so that gave me all the reason I needed ), why solving the equation of gravity suddenly enabled everyone to be able to live on Saturn in your typical Nolan-esque sideways world, etc. etc... Given all of that, I didn't even really notice the soundtrack, so I'll have to take your word for it (it's funny when people notice completely different things about a movie like that... this is why it's worthwhile to compare notes )

Oh, I'm sorry Serpent... I lost your other notification, so I would have needed to scroll all the way down to add my thoughts about the movie. I was just too lazy. It was still impressive that the first comment of the thread is dated September 30... all the way to the end of December-- that's gotta be a new record.

Well, while on the one hand I'm kinda bummed that it wasn't as cold as expected, I'm also relieved, because I'm not sure if I'd have been able to deal with freezing temperatures for a whole week. Also, one of my friends who accompanied me was even less cold resistant, so we would have had to take public transport way more often instead of walking everywhere, which would have been quite expensive!
The Swedish were really nice, yes - One thing that especially stands out is their greeting - They say "Hej" in such a joyful way that it instantly makes you feel welcome, it's really great
We also met up with a half Swedish, half Austrian girl that's the niece of the boss of the mother of one of the friends I travelled with (), who was also totally nice and showed us around in the city
The language is also quite fun in general, since many of the words are similar to German, as well as some that are close to English, so you can get around without knowing much Swedish. (Besides the fact that pretty much everyone there is fluent in English). So if I'd learn another language, I'd probably really chose Swedish

Your secret santa sounds fun too And a great way to get rid of unwanted gifts, which is also nice

I think it's funny that you critizised that the movie was too long, but now say that it lacked explanations I wouldn't necessarily call them plot holes, which for me is something that just doesn't make sense, but rather plot points that didn't get much exposition. But I'm okay with that, I like it when things are left to the viewer's imagination. Especially the post-apocalyptic world, after all it's not a disaster movie, and I think the world was shown enough to feel believable.
As for the professsor, the reason for his betrayal was that he knew that the crew would never agree to the mission if they knew that plan A was (seemingly) impossible.
But yes, the ending was a bit too much of an easy happy ending, I agree with you there. Also the physics things like surviving the black hole (which could be explained by the future people buiding a safetly mechanism?) and the whole premise of sending a message trough time with gravity sound kinda unbelievable, but on the other hand, my physics knowledge isn't the best, and if I recall correctly, NASA scientists helped working on the script, so who knows
But it's really hard for me to grasp how you just didn't notice the soundtrack - It's so outstanding with it's droney segments and the organ , something you hardly hear in soundtracks, and yet completely fitting for the movie! Really interesting how differently people perceive things!

Ha, I forgot about your cold resistance thing. Well, I'm sure it still helped somewhat, no matter the weather. So it seems like your thoughts about the Swedish language and culture were confirmed for you then.

Now that I'm actually participating in one, I think there ought to be more post-Christmas secret santas for that very reason. I bought my giftee a cute plastic dog treat container (she's a proud dog owner too) for cheap and I'm going to put in a bag of caramel-covered popcorn that I want to get rid of in it. Lord knows this time of year is already unhealthy enough.

Now now, did I say the solution was to add more? Definitely not. For example, they could have just gotten rid of the "bankrupting the Soviets" line with no ill effects (okay, maybe the loss of a laugh line) and much less confusion. They could have likewise gotten rid of Anne Hathaway's "maybe love reaches across dimensions" bit, because they already explore that theme with how Cooper always loves his children no matter where he is, and saved ourselves three minutes and the confusion as well.
Yes, while the "messages with gravity" part was hard to believe, I enjoyed that scene because I like the idea of being able to get to the past just by walking-- how easy it would be to be a historian! (less enjoyable perhaps because it takes the detective work out of it, but it would be highly accurate). And I also just really enjoyed how the film explores the family dynamics and just the story of love there in general.

Sweden was pretty much how I expected it, yes Only with less snow But I definitely want to visit it again, especially during Summer, and of course I also want to see more of the countryside! Oh, and also I have to visit again in winter sometime to see the northern lights!

I kinda get your complaints, some things really could have been left out without changing much. But yeah, in the end what matters is that it was an enjoyable movie

Ooh, it would be so great to see the northern lights! That's something I would definitely brave the cold for...one day.

It definitely was an enjoyable movie overall! It definitely had me on the edge of my seat a few times.
And the youtube commenters didn't really seem that sure either...the comments I read all seemed to refer to different scenes.

I haven't used the note system much since I returned from my hiatus, but good on them if they fixed the glitches! Yes, everything is public, but we mostly keep things neutral and friendly.

Well, since it says "bonus track" in the title, it probably wasn't in the movie at all in this version - There's a regular "Day One" on the tracklist right between "Dust" and "Stay", so it might have been used when Cooper was introduced to the mission/they started? ("Day One" would fit for the first day in space, but I'm confused why "Stay" comes afterwards, which I assume was used when Cooper parted with his children)

What glitches were there? I also haven't used it lately, but I can't remember having problems beforehand.
Still, if someone where to stalk one of us, there'd be a lot of tiny bits of personal information they could gain by reading through this. But I always think: If that'd happen, they'd proabably get that information one way or another

Hm, well wouldn't you want to go to the waaaaaay northernmost part of Sweden then? Like away from the city lights, obviously, otherwise you'd have a hard time seeing it.

I don't usually read the youtube comments either. In this case however, I, Schnauzer, being the ace detective that I am, took a look at them in order to try to answer my own question before I asked you.   It would have been shoddy detective work to fail to scroll down on the page I was already on to look for answers there first. You in turn took the Mystery of "Interstellar OST-Day One Dark (Bonus Track)" a step further in trying to place the song by looking at the track listing. If "Day One" takes place between "Dust" (which I assume takes place during one of the early dust storms) and "Stay" (like you said, the parting with his children), maybe "Day One" refers to day one at NASA, when the mission is being explained? Unless! Unless, like you suggest, as a bonus track it was not originally in the film at all? Then how can you say "oh, how did you not even notice this awesome soundtrack?" and then provide me an example, of a song that wasn't even in the movie? I question this evidence--I smell a conspiracy here!   (complete with conspiracy diet soda, of course )

I seem to recall that the messages would not always display in any sort of chronological or reverse-chronological order. Sometimes I would see that I had a new note and click the notification only to see my last outgoing message. The new incoming message would be hidden somewhere in the middle of the thread, so I would have to scroll and search for it. While it wasn't really a big deal, for messages of our length, that would be annoying to have to scroll and search for it. But I hope they have made it better since then!
Yes, there are bits and pieces of personal information, because we talk about all kinds of different things at random. It's kinda interesting, since it kind of amounts to little snapshots of our personalities without anything approaching the whole picture. Well, the stalker should probably look elsewhere for something more "useful and interesting" like, I don't know, my telephone number or something, because I sure don't have it here. Hey, maybe the stalker gave you the premium membership.

Yes, the farther north one goes, the higher the chances for seeing northern lights. Stockholm is relatively far down in the south of Sweden, so while I hoped for some northern lights, I didn't really expect any. Of course, in the far north it's crazy cold, as well as dark most of the time (which for northern lights is obviously an advantage, but kinda sucks for everything else). So yeah, I hope it will be worth it

Well, like I said, "Day One Dark" is a bonus track, however the regular "Day One" track should have been used in the movie. You might be right with your suggestion that it was used during the first day at NASA - it's rather calm, so that might fit. The only way to find out for sure is rewatching the movie several times
And the reason I linked this song is because it was one of the few songs available online before the soundtrack was released, and while at the time of sending you the link the complete soundtrack had found its way to youtube, I prefered that video since there was a big chance that the "regular" soundtrack would be removed from youtube soon. So no conspiracy here, sorry

Wouldn't a more fitting name for "Day One Dark" be "Night One?" I would have to watch it again anyway to take note of the soundtrack.

Well, most stalkers aren't in it for the money, are they? Depends on the stalker, I guess, but the typical stalker behaviour is just obsessing over the stalkee, and spending lots of time and maybe money on finding out their personal information, isn't it? And of course it also depends if they want to do you harm, or if they are that kind of crazy obsessed stalker that wants to make you fall in love with them or something
Luckily, I've never been stalked (until now? ), so I don't really know the specifics

Well, some people adapt to it, just not many.

I think most stalkers are in it for some sort of exploitation, yes. Money is just one of those ways-- like the "love scammers" and all of that. Once they know something about you, they can use it to their advantage to get something from you. But then again, there are probably all different kinds of stalkers, so who knows?

Ha, that book would be pretty boring for now. Maybe the next time I want to practice setting a scene for creative writing, I'll try to make the story interesting. Maybe put the detective office in Barrow, Alaska (look it up on a map ), and we (they? our alternative personalities?) try to solve the mystery under the light of the midnight sun. After all, it's an internet-based mystery, so why not?

We once had a family acquaintance that lived in Barrow, Alaska (which is why I know about it) for just under two years (I think the father was in the US Air Force). They said the dark and light was weird, but the worst thing by far was just the sheer isolation, followed by the perpetual cold. There are no roads leading out, so everything (and everyone) had to be flown in and out. The roads in the town were muddy at best, dangerous at the worst. And just the tundra on all sides of the little hamlet of civilization and the biting cold accompanying the darkness. They were constantly trying to keep each other sane. I don't know what it would be like for someone born that far north, though.

I just thought, man, this is the perfect setting for a horror movie in the style of "30 days of night", and, wouldn't you know it, that very movie does actually take place in Barrow! Still, I wonder why there's not more movies or stories like it. We don't even need so many science fiction stories with crazy planets if our own earth has so many extraordinary places

We're on a different schedule, so our new semester started already. But there's a lot to do in the way of applying for stuff, and most of the stuff I'm applying to has a mid-February deadline. But other than that everything's ok. I had a more normal length () response typed out and then somehow it all got deleted and I couldn't even ctrl-z or anything, so I just got really fed up and typed something quickly and logged out.  
But despite having things to do, I love procrastinating, so I made an outline for my proposed story. And well, it only features the DA caper as a side plot, but it's in there. I'll see what I can get done this weekend.

Oh goodness, well, lesson learned. If it happened to you a while ago, I'm probably lucky that I avoided that happening so far, considering some of the novel-length comments I've written.
Hey, you'll get used to it again, for sure. Plus there's a lot to like about school-- meeting new people, learning new things, and having excuses for everything: ("why didn't you call me?" "sorry, I was in class")--well, just kidding there.

Don't say that, why would your animation project be a failure? If it's anything close to the quality of your other works, it will be great. But I agree, motivation always picks a bad time to strike. But מה לעשות? (what can you do?)

That's pretty much my problem - I always set my goals way too high. And especially with 3d work, I always overestimate my skills. I mean, I know what to do in theory, but I've never even done character animation before. And combined with the fact that I just can't bring up the motivation to really dedicate myself to this project, I fear that I might not even complete it

Hey, I don't mind hearing about your problems, after all, that's what this website is *supposed* to be about, right? Artist supporting each other? Even though I can't tell you how to make a better animation (because believe me, I have no idea ), I can still lend a sympathetic ear. But it's your first character animation, so what? Everyone has that first time learning to try something new. When else would you do it? After the deadline? No way!

I know that sounds really flippant online like this, but it's true-- that really is too bad. :/ The best I can offer is my observation that the muse (inspiration, creativity, diligence...whatever you want to call it) always eventually comes back when it vanishes. And my observation that your art is always top-notch, however long it takes to create.

I agree, the comments on news articles in particular are the worst-- I can't remember the last time I bothered with those. But I confess that I find DA drama amusing on occasion (and feel glad that I didn't know about this website when I was 13 myself).

Ah yes, I saw your fridge masterpiece! It's pretty funny. I imagine it would be startling the first few times you go to open the fridge and see--that thing--staring back.

Yeah you're right, it can be amusing Internet drama in general, since people often take this stuff way to seriously I generally never argue on the internet, because it's just pointless, but many people seem unable to see their opinion challenged without getting defensive and angry.
The problem is that there's just so much drama that after it's amusing, it becomes depressing rather quickly. So many people wasting so much energy on all these stupid arguments

Thanks I thought about that - maybe it has the positive effect of scaring us into eating less?

Yep, as someone who knows a thing or two about politics, people in general don't want to be told they are wrong and will go great lengths to challenge it. It's just human nature, but sometimes it goes a little far. :/
But I agree that immaturity and drama (especially on the internet) gets old quickly. One of the several reasons I'm not on reddit anymore is because I got tired of those people who always post those big huge screeds on r/theredpill showing up elsewhere and ruining everyone's time. Like, I came here for the pun thread and not for your drivel.

Yes, and on the internet everybody feels even less reserved about voicing their thoughts, so crazy arguments and drama are predestined
And you're right about reddit, at first I really loved the community, but after a while I realized that they are as close-minded as other sites, just about other topics. Also, as soon as you realize that all the interesting threads get reposted every few months, it becomes pretty boring (And especially if you know exactly which puns are gonna be top comment )
But I still use it for the little subreddits where I can get music recommandations that cater to my uncommon taste Also, I'm subscribed to the subreddit of my city, and while hardly anyone posts there, sometimes something actually happens! Just recently a girl posted looking for tea drinking buddies, and now we meet regularly to drink tea and play card games

Well, I was never that big into it to begin with, so I guess I didn't notice the cyclical nature of the posts. And while I was going to comment on the oddly specific nature of her post, I guess in the end it was effective, since she found exactly what she was looking for.
