hello sir! Very impressed with your comic art, its a breathe of professionalism on deviant art. Your work reminds me a lot of Michael Zulli, or even of Bernie Wrightson. I very much admire your attention to detail and sense of pacing on the page.
What are your plans for printing crescent magic?

mlpeters In reply to mladen [2012-09-11 01:01:27 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for the extremely late reply. Had horrible dial-up for a while. Thank you for your compliments! I do admire and have met, both Michael Zulli and Bernie Wrightson and many other artist.
Currently, I'm writing and drawing a second story arc for CRESCENT CITY MAGICK. Due to the changing market and the limitations of the current creator-owned publishers, I'm plannign on publishing CCM as a graphic novel, perhaps as a series of graphic novels. The first arc, of four issue/chapters added up to 88 pages, which is small for a GN, so I'm doing a second arc, now, and plan both to be packeaged together. Whether I'll find a good publisher to work with, or self-publish, is still in question.
Thank you for your interest.

Thanks! I'm a big fan of both Zulli and Wrightson.
As for CRESCENT CITY MAGICK... it's an open question. I've been submitting to publishers, some have replied (with the sort of bland negative response that makes one wonder if they even looked at it...) and some, I'm still waiting on... An acquaintance who self-publishes offered to help, but now seems to have his hands full, with his own book.

If worst comes... I'll put the fully lettered version up on a webcomic site, where anyone can read it. I have friends who have done that, followed by a P.O.D collection. I'll have to bend their ear to figure out the details. Thanks for wishing me luck - - I might get to talk in person with publishers soon, at Detroit Fanfare.

Webcomic and print on demand seems to be a pretty sold route which a lot of people are taking now. I know a few people who are getting into newstand-only comics here in Australia, bypassing Diamond altogether. Gutsy, and costly.
Hopefully you can get some attention and some blog-press buzz from the cons.

Your work is awesome. Love the linework and the old prints inking style. Reminds of great masters of old and their illustrations of some of my childhood preferred readings such as Verne, Salgari and Burroughs.

I wish I could answer you on CRESCENT CITY MAGICK... I've sent it to some publishers, heard back from some (not good... the sort of bland rejection that makes one think they scanned the cover letter to copy/paste info into a form letter), still waiting on others... fingers are crossed (even if it's not easy to draw like this... and I'll be sending out more, after I finish lettering the final (of this story arc/mini-series. I'd love to do more) issue.

keep at it mate. from what i've read from people who've got there is that perseverance is the key. I wish you all the best and hope to one day see your stuff in print.
Have you thought about bublishing yourself or doing digital?

mlpeters In reply to ntholden [2011-09-10 08:07:32 +0000 UTC]
I've been in print -- Heavy Metal, Image, Desperado, Caliber... but not for any full series that I've written and drawn. I've had my best luck in the past with Heavy Metal, but CRESCENT CITY MAGICK is far too long for them and not really up their alley.
I might try putting it on a web-comic hosting site... I'd have to check with friends to see which sites tend to bring in the most readers.
Self-publishing is something I just can't afford. Maybe a kickstarter thing could help...

Your work is very good. If I had to guess the the basis of those thinking your stuff is retro or such is possibly due to the fact that your hairstyles seem to be stuck in the 80's and possibly early 90's.
