Both almost always we trace the icons in AI and then we make the shadow and light effects in PS.

And what is the dimention and also the Risolution of your work? 256x256 pixel with 300 of dpi?

The size depends of the kind of icon, the resolution for digital purposes is always 72dpi.

Both sometimes we the icons in Illustrator and the then we put the effects like shadows, lights, texture and reflections in Photoshop, other times we made all in Photoshop, all depends of the needs of the clients and the complexity of the icon
