# About me

I live in Bristol, where I originally studied physics at university, and I now work as an engineer for Rolls-Royce helping to design and build jet engines.

My hobby and passion is art and digital painting. I am a self taught artist, and have much to learn and improve on but hopefully I get a little better with every new painting.

You should be doing the poster art for the up and coming 50th anniversary episode!

Your gallery is really wonderful. You know what, I'm also a hobby artist with a strong background in science.I know that with engineering we can get a solid job and money which is not possible in the artistic line. That's why I'm gonna go for Computer science engineering.
BTW with a job how much free time do you get to make you paintings?I'm asking this because I'm not sure If I'll be able to get enough free time to continue my hobby when I get my Job?

Hi there,

Thank you for taking an interest in my gallery, I appreciate it.

When I first started my engineering job (eek! 8 years ago now!) I didn't have any time for art - in fact, I rarely thought about it and I had too many distractions anyway. But someone much wiser than me told me that it is important to get a good work/life balance going, and not to give up hobbies that we are passionate about. Well it took a number of years, but about 18 months ago I really got back into drawing and painting and I've really enjoyed it.

It's hard work though, and takes up a lot of my spare time, but working digitally helps. I might spend a week of evenings painting one picture. I aim to produce one illustration a month. I think quality is better than quantity too, particualrly when productivity is low. I want a gallery I can be proud of. This approach might not work for everyone, but I find it works for me.

My tips would be:
1) Keep your hand in, pracitce makes perfect
2) Stay inspired - visits galleries, read magazines (ImagineFX is great!), watch online tutorials
3) Put aside a good amount of time to engage in your art (put down that Xbox controller!)
4) Get an amazingly well paid job and buy the best tools - Photoshop + Intuos!! (but it won't make you an amazing artist alone, it just makes the journey there easier)

Best of luck with your pursuits in Computer Science. That sounds like it will be a very good marriage with your creative skills as an artist. Being multi-skilled (or at least having an appreciation of other work areas) really helps in today's world.

Thanks for the wonderful advice.
I really appreciate that you were able continue with your hobby in spite of having a busy life.
Your advice has really inspired me a lot.
I'll focus more on the quality so that I can also have a beautiful gallery like yours.
Once again thanks, and Best of luck with your life.

No, thank you.

I never thought when I started posting my paintings I would get such positive feedback as yours. The dA community is a great thing and I'm glad I'm part of it. May it, and your own art, bring you joy and rewards in the future!

Wonderful gallery which not only reveals your talent but is so interesting in the variety and feel of the pieces you have produced. It's hard to believe that the artistic beauty of some of your paintings such as "Russian Doll" came from someone with such a strong background in science and engineering. Having a similar background and knowing my lack of artistic talent, I lift my hat to you.

Hey there,

Thank you so much for your kind comments, and thanks for taking an interest.

When I finished A-levels, I was torn between studying some sort of Art degree at university/college or going for a Physics degree. I chose the latter, and to this day I still don't know if I made the right decision - I have a solid job and good money in engineering, but my passion isn't fired like it is for art!

Right now art is a hobby, but maybe one day it'll be something more - I have so much more to learn and all those Art grads / pro-artists have at least 10 years head start on me!!

Greetings from the frozen wilderness sometimes called Canada,

I think you made the right choice - solid job and good money buys you the time and ability to explore your dreams. However, forget the one day stuff. It might seem like a hobby at times but if art is your passion then follow it. My wife just got her BFA and if there is one thing I learned from watching her and her classmates, talent without hard work will only take you so far. Explore your talent and I will look forward to watching it grow!
