One more thing: I think I've found a way to convert my .x models into .obj and .3ds format if necessary and I can make texture maps from a .obj file

For got to say this in my note: I've been modeling for about 2 months using what I'm using now. I started making stuff in Sketchup late last year, but I've stopped using it now.
