what are you having trouble with? their features or the coloring? I recommend doing life drawings of them for experience. And look at cartoonists impressions of them like from the proud family and moana for examples of how the pros interpreted them.

sounds good. Well i tend to be long winded when giving advice so i'll try to keep it simple for now. if you draw traditionally then fill a sketchbook every month (or close). If you work digitally then predetermine a set page size and fill it with sketches everyday (or close to everyday). now there should be next to know blank space on these pages when you are done. Here are some examples of how i did it traditionally π: 0 β©: 1
Β
I strongly recommend that you pair this with figure drawing and hand studies since those tend to help with drawing and "seeing" in general. but of course you can draw whatever you want as long as you are meeting the quota. Keep it loose and quick and draw as much as you can.Β
That's it. if you can manage to do those things then you be a better artist in no time at all. If you manage to stick with it and you see some improvement feel free to message me and i'll help some more

thx for your solid feedback. I will take your advice seriously and work hard on my studies. Maybe you find some time already and have a look on my gallery for hard critiques. Would be outstanding...

Your hitting everything with hard light with high contrast (ab solute light to to straight black). I think they look fine but note that the regular charcoal stick you are using on its own won't turn the lights and shadows over the form more naturally unless you suppliment with a more easily controled graphite penvil or some kind of blending media like a stub or your finger.Β
I strongly recommend that you get your hands on graphite media (easy to control and build) and use it with your charcoal media. This way you can keep your rich darks but you also can start varying your mid tones better instead of constantly falling into high contrast pieces. Β

I see the issue. Thx for the advice. I used my finger but the charcoal did not blend very constantly. i think I'm using the wrong paper. Also I still have probs seeing value correctly and simplify shapes (abstract) correctly.

Well to improve you shapes and overlap in general you need to woget better at gesture drawing. How quickly and how accurately can you represent the mass in front of you?
Using your finger to blend or even a stump is something you only really need with charcoal. I hate having to use smudging just to turn a form and that's why I use graphite as my prI mary medium. It has a lighter line so it's easy to build from a light value to a darker one. But the trade off is that if you used graphite exclusively like me you won't be able to get the deep darks at the end of the spectrum anymore. It's all a matter of preference so try different tools out and see what works for you
